Last week, back in the old place, we had a discussion about great and interesting current singer/songwriters and some felt I didn't give enough credit to Dar Williams. Fair enough. She's no Aimee Mann, but she's pretty damn good. One more thing, before we get to the video, someone else mentioned Devendra Banhart. Puh-leeze. He's like a more annoying Vincent Gallo... if that's possible.
Lyrics here.

singer/songwriters you say? Kelly Joe Phelps couldn’t get any cooler without moving to Alaska.

I could tell you stories about Vincent Gallo that would make your scrotum shrink and your asshole pucker tight.
He is one weird MoFo. Oddly, he is a collector of valuable vintage recording gear. Still…
One of my all time favorites. Thank you.
Its Saturday morning, the 27th anniversary of the death of John Lennon. Take some time out today and “Imagine”.
R.I.P. John.
Dialup at home, so my palate remains dirty, alas.
BOHICA, I had forgotten the date. That night was one of the weirdest all-night drinking binges I can remember (and possibly weirder than some I can’t).
By the way, if anyone here is in the Bay Area, there’s a Barbarian (Bay ARea Bloggers And Readers) gathering tomorrow afternoon at Elixir, 16th & Guerrero; details here.
tbogg, if you haven’t already, check yourself out some Cry Cry Cry - Dar, Richard Thompson(I think) and (mumble mumble).
We have a copy of Cry Cry Cry
A couple years ago Mrs. Cakes and I saw the guitar pull with Dar, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patty Griffin and Shawn Colvin. We had never heard Dar before. She was awesome.
Steve Earle is a fave singer-songwriter.
This is for John Lennon!

But before we get all sentimental — this is for John Lennon!

John’d unnerstand…
Back to Slick.
That little paean to “all religions” in his JFK-lite
speech didn’t go East much.
What, Rom-adan’s speech-writers couldn’t think of anything nice
to say about Hindus or Buddhists?
Put a gun to my head and demand I pick a religion or else,
I have no problem saying — Tibetan Buddhism now put the gun
down.
Peace to all sentient beings motherfuckers.
Christians and Pagans, indeed.
Can we find 5 ways Mitt Romney and Dar Williams are alike?
1. They both have lived large parts of their lives in Massachusetts.
2.
Hmmm. Sorry. That’s all I can think of right now.
If by current you mean still writing and singing, then it has to be John Prine. He is as strong today as when Steve Goodman first introduced Prine to Kris Kristofferson.
If you mean current generation, it is hard to get away from Pink (Dear Mr. President) . Or a if little older, David Wilcox.
(BTW this new blog engine seems to be advancing blogging in the same manner that Yugo advanced automobiles.)
I quite like Sean Lennon
Unlike Julian who repudiates his Da, but sounds like a pale imitation,
Julian is at once his own person and his parents’ child.
Would y’all call Robert Wyatt a singer/songwriter?
R.I.P. Karlheinz Stockhausen
See you all later, I have to go to the 99¢ Cents Only Store.
P. S.: The Preview still doesn’t work.
Lord. Just hearing you describe those private part sensations made me
experience them (involuntarily).
Slightly OTT, but–
Fuck Fuckabee.
He thinks the earth is younger than written language.
Younger than human civilization.
Younger than lizard civilization.
Younger than multicellular aggregation.
Younger than unicellular life.
Younger than the fucking earth itself could ever possibly be.
Fuckabee is insane beyond the understanding of even George W. Bush.
Even Commander Codpiece admits the earth is millions of years old.
Fuckabee has it pegged at October 23, 4004 BCE.
This thing is deserving of nothing but hatred and ridicule and anyone who sees a shade of a shadow of of any possible forward-thinking solutions to the problems of humanity from this Omnipotent-Young-Earth-Space-Daddy worshipping automaton…if you’re reading this, there is no help for you.
I go on the road for 4 days and now my whole world is topsy-turvy.Hope the new place works out well Tbogg.
I forgot, Lucinda Williams!
Love Dar, love Lucinda, Love Aimee. Dar is no newcomer to the “scene”. Shes been on folk circuit for decades.
Joanna Newsome’s really good lately. I also like the band she tours with.
Ani Difranco.
I love most of Lucinda’s work, but Lucinda is a young novice compaired to the mastery of Ani.
