Roger Kimball, who inhabits the Puffy Shirt Chair at PJ Media, hears about the Mayor of Toledo asking the Marines to play their war games elsewhere, and says what everyone else is only thinking:
I gather that Mayor Finkbeiner (a Democrat, readers will be surprised to learn), like the folks in Berkeley, California, can’t think of the United States Marines without having the first lines of “The Destruction of Sennacherib” float through his head (“The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold …”)
Yes Roger, you’ve read your classics, we’re all very impressed with your little bon mot. Now run along and go bugger the stable boy while he cries out "O Captain! My Captain!" and you yell "Louder, or no farthing for you!".
Meanwhile the Ole Perfesser thinks this is a good example of the Name That Party scenario because it is entirely possible that the people of Toledo, reading the Toledo Blade, might not know that their mayor is a Democrat. Those sneaky Blade bastards…

“Sherry’s?” Alert the Apostropher Royal! Or is Sherry’s some some popular watering hole in Toledo where Roger Kimball, Lord Byron, and Sennacherib gather to lift a jar or two with the Marines?
I gather that Roger can’t even walk three steps without acting like a douchebag.
You owe me a new keyboard.
It is pointless for the Blade to list the mayor’s political party. He changes parties as often as most people change their clothes. Most Toledoans don’t view Finkbeiner as a Democrat; they view him as nuts.
Damn the Berkeley intelligentsia! We hillbillies in the Adirondacks only take our classics in illustrated form. Roger might give Fox News a hand, tho. It seems they can’t even keep track of what party McQueeg belongs to.
I love, LOVE, the comments on the PJ’s media page. The jackanapes over there are bragging about emailing the Mayor of Toledo with their threats of withholding their tourism dollars because of his actions. Their __TOLEDO, OHIO__ tourism dollars! Christ on a bike, nobody goes to Toledo, except apparently, a bunch of marines from Michigan…
Shit, Cedar Point is nearby, but that’s Sandusky! Different city entirely!
That’s it. I vow never to take my family and friends on a luxury vacation to Arkansas until that Hucklebee fella straightens up and votes pro-choice! That’ll show ‘em!
I live in Toledo. You don’t ask if a city politician in a Democrat or Republican. You ask which branch of the Democratic party; the UAW branch, or the non-UAW branch.
PS And yes, everybody views him as nuts.
I still laugh whenever I think of this:
”I have already taken up far too much of your valuable time with my classical natterings,” Bush said. ”I dearly wish I could give you back this hour during which you so graciously indulged my dilettantism, but, as Plautus said, ’Factum est illud, fieri infectum non potest.’ Done is done, it cannot be made undone.”
Tbogg: Didn’t you really mean to write “No Farting, while I am buggering you”.
Nuts or not, Democrat, Republican, Independent or extraterrestrial it doesn’t matter, basic military protocol requires that civilian officials–not just Republican ones–be involved in decisions involving American civilians. Since we don’t yet live in a police state and since surely people as drilled in “chain of command” as the military must have known the mayor and not the Chief of Police is the ranking official in a city, to ignore the man elected by the people of Toledo was inexcusable. Plus, the crazy man was probably right in this case. I worked in a civilian museum on an Air National Guard base which was used, without our prior knowledge, for training. I was used to seeing armed military personnel around, but it was still terrifying to come face-to-face with a soldier, weapon drawn, when I turned down a quiet hallway of the museum. We were on a base, so it was perfectly legit for them to use the museum for training. Still, this sort of “surprise” was unsettling in the extreme for civilians who were not trained for or expecting it. I can’t even imagine doing this to an entire city full of civilians. Bad military strategy, shoddy execution–sounds like this batch of Marines and their commanders is ready for deployment to Iraq!!
Why go 200 miles? What the heck was wrong with Grand Rapids, Michigan? Certainly a city. If larger than Toledo, wasn’t there a city of similar size nearby? Why does the district represented for decades by Gerald Ford, and today is represented by another Rethuglican, whose state rep. is a Rethuglican – hate America?
“Sherry’s for everyone”
I have a cousin named Sherry and I guess I didn’t know her as well as I thought I did.
