It hard to see the writer part of Simon from this turd. Its easy to see the racist asshole. I hate pricks that live off a shining moment 50 years ago. You are an asshole now and have been for forty five years.

I am a little younger than this prick, but I remember vividly the times he’s describing. There’s nothing worse than an asshole who manages conveniently to forget his past and then use it, conveniently, to bash someone else. What a toad.

It is obvious that Simon didn’t actually listen to the whole speech, that he’s a victim of his own choices and the highlights that were handed to him by Fox News.

Don’t blame Roger, blame those that twisted Roger and will continue to twist more people into hate and into irrational panty twisting.

Just off the top of my head, I would say that endorsing torture would be more appalling. Unprovoked wars that kill hundreds of thousands of people. Terrorism, maybe. An economic or environmental meltdown leading to mass starvation and homelessness. Or even institutional racism, bigotry with the power of an armed state to back it up.

All of these things make my “more appalling than belonging to the congregation of a bigot” list.

Especially when you consider that millions of Americans go to religious services every week to listen to bigots who hate gays. But I suppose that’s not the sort of bigotry Roger objects to.

I’m actually at a loss as to who or what this poem’s supposed to be about. My guess is that either a) it’s a pastiche of Simon and other civil rights/radical types or b) Simon’s a dick. Incidentally, I’d suggest everyone here read that – I couldn’t make him seem like a bigger asshole if I tried. By his own words, his civil rights experience seems to have primarily consisted of sitting in an office in a funeral home and writing bad novels. Of course, I’m sure he wrote it that way to contrast his bad old hippie ways with his more enlightened (divorce-ridden, cradle-robbing) conservative present.
