What I find so troubling isn’t that Simon is trying to compare one site’s traffic with the traffic of dozens of blogs — that’s the typical rightwing stupidity.

What I find so troubling is that dozens of sites written by people who have been wrong about nearly everything the past few years still get that much traffic.

Regarding the Clinton taxes, I think MetalMonkey is right — the wingnuts never envisioned what has happened with the Clinton finances. I recall some pundit during all the panty raids on the White House talking about how too-fucking-bad that this jerk who had never had a real job but only fed at the public trough his whole damned life had to spend so much money on attorneys.

They were so hoping that both Mr. and Mrs. Clinton would slink off into the sunset penniless as a result of the years-long assaults on both of them for every bogus charge anyone could think up.

See that’s precisely the problem. Roger should claim that blogs around the main portal are ~~“democratic and bloggy”~~ “demned neurotic and blowsy” then he can have even more readers show up. All of us will be looking for some hysterics and laughs and we would find it. Simon’s advertising is off tone.

As for his expressed sentiments while sniffing around the Clinton taxes –

Funny how people think newspapers are dying ’cause we can get all our new from blogs - which mostly point at and comment on stories discovered/uncovered…by newspapers.

Or maybe more accurately, stories discovered/uncovered by reporters. The TV still has a few reporters, too.

Obviously traditional media is having a tough time making money. But reportage can’t be replaced by commentary.

Dunno how this will shake out, but if investigative reporting dies, we will be only have press releases and PR firms for “news”. Not good.
