I am now convinced that Mark Penn was tossed aside so that Karl Rove could drive the Clinton campaign. This is one of their dumbest moves yet.

By the way, Bill’s efforts to make hay of this for Hillary aren’t exactly bearing fruit.

But the issue doesn’t seem to be sticking. Clinton himself has been silent on the issue. But at the first two events of the day, the campaign has sent one of Carolina’s hometown boys out to push the issue before Clinton takes the stage. Tom Hendrickson, a Clinton supporter and former Democratic Party chairman, included a reading of Obama’s comments in his introduction of Clinton.

In both instances, Hendrickson’s speech evidenced little reaction from the crowd, which had been waiting for the main event for over an hour, and appeared to have little tolerance for a parade of surrogates.

By the third stop of the day in Goldsboro, Hendrickson did not even take the stage.

In Goldsboro, close observers noticed a (light) smattering of stickers being worn by attendees. “I’m not bitter!” read the simple rectangular label on the lapels of a couple dozen in the crowd. The campaign says that the stickers are evidence of outrage at the grassroots level.

Yet it’s unclear how spontaneous the sentiment was. A boxful of the stickers was spotted at Clinton’s first event of the day — being whisked backstage.

Clinton tries to revise Mississippi comments

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Democratic presidential contender Hillary Rodham Clinton tried to backpedal Friday from comments she made in October suggesting Mississippi was a backward place for women’s progress.

Speaking to radio station WJZD-FM in Gulfport, Miss., the former first lady said the comments she made about the state in the run up to the Iowa caucuses “were not exactly what I said,” even though they came directly from an interview she gave to the Des Moines Register in October.

Hillary’s Mississippi comments

I’ve been a little surpised that more GOP presidential candidates haven’t jumped on the comments Hillary made to David Yepsen the other day in discussing her candidacy in Iowa.

In case you missed it, the third graf is key:
“I was shocked when I learned Iowa and Mississippi have never elected a woman governor, senator or member of Congress. There has got to be something at work here,” she said, theorizing it may be the risk-averse nature of a state built around agriculture.

“I think not only do I have to bring people to me, I have to maybe reassure people here maybe more than I do in New Hampshire, which has had a woman governor,” she said.

“I think Iowa poses a special burden, or a special obstacle to me because when you look at the numbers, how can Iowa be ranked with Mississippi? That’s not what I see. That’s not the quality. That’s not the communitarianism, that’s not the openness I see in Iowa.”

The idea of anyone in the Clinton campaign, even for momentary tactical advantage, sporting an “I’m not bitter” sticker ought to make anyone fall on the floor in a fit of laughter. Bitterness is all they’ve got in the tank at this point.

And the new Clinton campaign theme song?

Attention Obama and Clinton kids: We’ll take either, okay? Seriously. We’ll all vote for whichever one wins, and we expect you to do the same. We’d also kind of like it if all you guys could keep from making it easier for McCain to beat whoever the nominee is.

I don’t think this is asking too much, you party people already decided there was no way in fuck my preferred candidate would ever make it through the primaries, in fact you do every four years. Am I bitter? Yes. Did I vote for Gore and Kerry despite any lingering bitterness? Yes. Will I vote for Obama, Clinton, or some variation thereof? Yes.

This is more important than my candidate. This is more important than your candidate. I will gladly buy you a drink after your candidate loses, and we can commiserate gently, but only if you put the cause–keeping John McCain out of the fucking White House–above your personal preferences.
