Just days before the North Carolina primary, the Democratic presidential contest in this state is suddenly alive with a fresh air of competition, as Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton seeks to capitalize on a controversy that polls suggest has whittled away some of Senator Barack Obama’s support among white voters.
Not long ago, Mr. Obama was perceived to hold such an advantage that some Democrats here wondered whether Mrs. Clinton would bother to compete vigorously. But the candidates intensified their efforts in the final weekend — both appeared here on Friday evening — and Mr. Obama was eyeing a return on the eve of the election.
“This primary election on Tuesday is a game changer,” Mrs. Clinton told a crowd in Kinston. “This is going to make a huge difference in what happens going forward. The entire country — probably even a lot of the world — is looking to see what North Carolina decides.”
And if Obama wins Hillary Clinton will graciously step aside for the good of the party.
Doubtfully. There is still a little more Earth that she and her "spokespeople" have yet to scorch.

Hillary’s fucked.
*just imagine the little linkies to photos seen not saved
And to make the f-pejorative gender neutral —
McCain’s fucked. Guy can’t even raise his arms over his shoulders much less contest a 3.
Clinton could lose the remaining contests by 100% and she still wouldn’t drop out. The pandering and bullshitting from her campaign will go on right through the convention.
Deep, dark, hidden fear: What if Hillary does a Lieberman and tries a third-party run?
OK, not likely. But it’s not like such a thing is unprecedented for a DLC fuckhead.
I doubt that she’d do that. I do think that she’s become like some of the coal mining companies in that she’s willing to completely fuck up whatever stands between her and what she wants. That includes her party.
If Hillary pulls a Lieberman I hope she understands she’s completely trashed any legacy she or her husband ever hoped would make people look back favorably upon them.
It’s so disappointing that when the primary contenders were first out of the gate I looked at the lot of them and said, “For the first time ever, I wouldn’t be upset if any one of those people win the nomination. None are perfect, but this isn’t a bad bunch to choose from.”
As time went on I had a couple of favorites and they dropped by the wayside and I still wasn’t in any distress. I was looking quite favorably on Senator Clinton and thinking that I, a white woman in my 60s, could be really happy to see her win. What a great place to be.
Then I saw more of the classy young Senator Obama and decided that I would vote for him because he is the best person for this job at this time. I like what he does. I like what he says. I like what he thinks. I like him. What a great day it will be in America when we proudly stand up our first African American President!
Then it got ugly. Senator Clinton began fighting dirty and it made me ashamed. How could she resort to this in light of all she has seen throughout her adult life? How? I blamed it on her campaign handlers. Then I had to admit that she is responsible for everything that has happened and no “oopsies” will be accepted.
If John McCain wins in November, I will forever blame Hillary Clinton. If Barack Obama wins but has his presidency crippled by infighting, I will blame Hillary Clinton. If Hillary Clinton wins, I will once again be sorry that my government is run by someone who has no conscience and no grace, and I will blame Hillary Clinton.
What a sorry sight.
Sooo, what’s this “new controversy” that has Obama sliding in “some polls”?
I hear that he has two black children.
The media spins the “Obama can’t get white votes” narrative, accompanied by non-stop Jeremiah footage. Meanwhile, Clinton’s approval among blacks has plummeted by about 40%. No story there for the general election, right?
If John McCain wins in November, I will forever blame Hillary Clinton. If Barack Obama wins but has his presidency crippled by infighting, I will blame Hillary Clinton. If Hillary Clinton wins, I will once again be sorry that my government is run by someone who has no conscience and no grace, and I will blame Hillary Clinton.
xpurg8d: It’s nice that you’ve worked all this out in advance.
I must cop to the fact that I first read TBogg’s “There is still a little more Earth that she and her “spokespeople” have yet to scorch,” as, “There is still a little more Earth that she and her “snakespeople” have yet to scorch.”
On reflection, that works for me.
Grace Nearing:
I didn’t begin the primary races with a bad attitude about Senator Clinton. I liked her. I defended her a number of times to people who didn’t want to hear a thing from her or about her. I thought it would be GREAT if she won the nomination and the election.
My “working it all out in advance” came because of her behavior, her choices, her chosen surrogates and the impact of everything she continues to do at this point. Sorry if it offends you.
I seem to remember from the right wing conspiracy that Bill and Hill are capable of murder. Back then, it seemed ridiculous; now it seems that they are capable of murder - at least the murder or the Democratic party, the best candidate in decades; and the hopes of turning the page.
She creates poloarization as much as the Newt Gingrich crowd. The earth is already scorched, but she has obliterated dreams. I feel like Iran will feel if she is provoked.
Well, if it helps…
Hillary Clinton wanted Eight Belles to win the Kentucky Derby today, but when her horse went over the finish line it collapsed (broken ankles) and had to be euthanized. Karma or a reflection of her campaign and where it’s headed? Could be.
Obama’s horse won the Kentucky Derby and it appears he’s won Guam as well.
Oy, I thought this was a site I could come to without having to read the Hillary-hating that’s morphed over much of the left web. I guess not. The original post and the comments are just oh so pleasant. (By the way, has anyone figured out where that doctored You Tube that tried to depict Clinton supporter Mickey Kantor as using the “n” word” came from? I guess that’s not such big deal, huh? But why do I get the feeling that if a similarly doctored video tearing down an Obama supporter had popped up we would have had a week of chest-beating and wailing from the Obama groupies about those hateful Clintonites. Sigh.
Yeah, looks to me like too many of Obama’s supporters had already hung up the “Mission Accomplished” banner and like their forerunners weren’t ready for the fight against a really tough opponent.
and i have to say that all of this endlessly repetitive bickering between people who, ostensibly (but maybe not), don’t want the Republicans to keep the White House makes me puuuuke.
you’re like a bunch of petulant kindergartners that haven’t learned that the only way to make something work out isn’t endless caterwauling and hitting the other kid back until they quit and start crying.
we have an opportunity here but it isn’t indestructible.
Pol Pot would know what to do.
No offense, but I’m glad you finally spelled that out.
For good or ill, it’s over and she needs to get off the stage with as much dignity as she can scrape up.
But that ain’t really The Clinton Way, is it?
Obama’s horse won Guam?
Why didn’t anyone tell me Obama had black kids? THAT’S a dealbreaker….
Great news for Democrats in today’s WaPo:
” Karma or a reflection of her campaign and where it’s headed? Could be.”
What?!? No, that’s just cold. You must be a republicon to be so heartless about a horse. You’d better check your own karma.
Col. “Bat” Guano endorsed Obama?
The original post and the comments are just oh so pleasant.
I don’t hate Hillary. I’d vote for her against any Republican.
But she’s fucked. Obama played the “I got game” card at the perfect strategic moment in Indiana and North Carolina, immediately after the media barrage (Mach 2) over Rev. Wright.
“The next President of the United States is open!” from UNC coach Roy Williams was priceless, a real deal-sealer.
As far as being pleasant goes…this is TBogg, bitches!
Looks to me like Hillary was the one not ready to fight against a real tough opponent. She didn’t get a chance to unfurl her own “Mission Accomplished” banner after Super Tuesday, did she?
Ok, first of all, I gotta go thru Firedoglake lost login info and back to the mailbox and change browsers and all over again thru clickclickclickclickhell just to get on here and make a complete ass of myself so I have to rilly rilly rilly want to do this, so here goes. I’m an instant run-off kind of guy and I would just as soon walk into the voter booth on election day and rate every single person who wants to be president in order of preference so I will never understand why anyone drops out. Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee and Bill Richardson and John Edwards could all still be there for all I care but the rules say the field will be narrowed to two strong candidates who will find it almost impossible to pull away unless they have staggering strong support which kind of makes sense I guess which is where we are and if it doesn’t settle itself then people with a huge personal interest in the outcome have to get together and pick the one they think is going to deliver. I think Hillary would make a good president, but no one has ever built a party like Obama. He raises money and draws voters in unheard-of numbers. Winning the White House and being a good president are like minor side effects of what he is doing. So good luck picking. Happy to keep Hillary as a Senator. She’s on track to be one of the best ever, in case you haven’t noticed. Ok, that’s it. I’m never coming back here.
xpurg8d: I am not offended. I am amused.
Hillary pulled a Saddam in the beginning but she hasn’t gone down easy since. Evidently she’s a better guerilla fighter than conventional army general. The reaction of the Obama crowd since Super Tuesday has been kind of reminiscent of the Provisional Authority in mid ‘03, substituting “We won [name of state caucus here] for “we just captured AQ’s # 2 guy”.
This contest has gone too far and for too long. If she loses both, I hope she will suspend. If not, I’m certain she’s going on ’till the end. [banging head on desk]
I guess what bothers me the most is how awful we’ve all gotten towards each other. We’ve gone so far off the rails that many have made derisive blogposts about a dead horse. It was appalling. Thank heavens the Great Orange Satan moved beyond that. But TPM has bloggers posting on it still, crowing on, on it’s cafe side.
This political season, I’ve met the enemy and it’s us, members of the purportedly reality based community.
I’ve noticed that the level of fervor has ramped up considerably on both sides. My dad (a high RWA if there ever was one) sent me some ridiculous email spam of how Pelosi wants to tax retirement income at 50% so she can give it to illegal immigrants, etc., etc. Usually I just delete his junk and move on, but I did a quick Google search and found the same text at snopes.com, which revealed it to be a parody that has been going around since 2006. I sent him the link and told him that this was a parody, and not true. I got back a screed telling me he is sick of me and I could go to hell, it came from a “source” he trusts, and ending with a “Goodbye, and never contact me again!”. Funny, he’s the one who has been trying to pick a political fight via email for months now, but my pointing out that he was sending a parody around as god’s honest truth was apparently too much to handle.
So, once again the fact that his politics are opposite to mine mean that I am vilified and shunned by him; happens every 4 years it seems but this time I think the shunning is going to stick. Since he got cable and plugged into Faux Spews 2 years ago that this is all he watches all night long, and he has certainly got his rage on this time.
Yeah, but can she take it to the hole?
