There's people around who tell you that they know
And places where to send you, and it's easy to go
They'll zip you up and dress you down and stand you in a row
But you know you don't have to, you can just say "no"

First a a video which is a lousy video. but a great recording of El Goodo, and then a story.
Now the story: I was sitting around talking with songwriter Steve Poltz once, and The Ballad of El Goodo came on and in mid-sentence he stopped and said, "Dude. This is one of the best fucking songs ever done." And then he sang along with it until the end at which point we went back to our conversation as if it had never happened. I think it's one of the greatest unknown pop songs ever recorded .
By the way, Poltz is one of the most entertaining people you'll ever meet. Watch him here, here, and here (in sequence) to get an idea.

I once met Carmaig DeForest at the Hotel Utah, mainly because my friend Scott, who I was drinking beer with, knew him from college or something. Eleven or twelve years later, Carmaig DeForest showed up one day on two of about five or six Random 10 lists on Tom Hilton’s If I Ran The Zoo site.

Alex Chilton. Chris Bell. Genius.
Fuck you, That 70’s Show. Use a cover version of “In the Street” as your theme. Would it have killed you to use the original?
That whole first Big Star album is amazing. I was a Posies fan for a long time, but they had a lot of stuff I was lukewarm on. Then I started listening to Big Star, and it gave me a whole new perspective on the Posies stuff.
But still, I think “Give Me Another Chance” from that album is probably the best song. It combines the best of both Chilton and Bell.
Oh, and I just got MBV tickets for their September show in Chicago. The acoustics at the venue suck, but somehow I don’t think it will matter for MBV.

OK, two weeks ago someone (jokingly?) suggested picking random tunes out of our vinyl collection. Since I suspect the true goal of this exercise is embarassment, this would give likes of Paul Vance a fighting chance of peeking out. I stuck with my 7″ collection & did a random walk among them by flipping a coin 9 times per selection. Note that this only chooses a slab of vinyl, not a track, so I then had to flip for the track, giving a one-song promo an unfortunate advantage over anything on, say, RRR-100, a collection of 100 locked grooves. The results surpassed my expectations & I especially liked the last pairing:
Small Electric Piece - Bruce Gilbert
The Plumber’s Song - The Optomists
Marcelle Vahine - The Kingston Trio
OFFENBACH: Barcarolle - The American Radio Warblers (a knock-off of Hartz Mountain’s Master Radio Canaries)
Papa’s Got the Wagon - Gloria Walker
ARBAN: The Carnival Of Venice - Cities Services Band Of America/Paul Lavalle
KING: Kentucky Sunrise/Prince Of Decorah Galop - Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus Band
Shining Star - Earth, Wind & Fire
Holy War People - Early Morning Telescope (1987)
The Americans (A Canadian’s Opinion) - Gordon Sinclair
The latter link will lead you to a ZIP file of a spoken-word compilation that also includes Father Guido Sarducci’s hilarious answer-record, “A European (Speaks Up for the US)”. Some of the other tracks look tempting, too. Go. You’ll thank yourself.
For those for haven’t done it, set aside 15 minutes of your life and watch the three Steve Poltz videos. They’re hilarious, and as a bonus, Poltz took a song that I used to hate (Jewel’s “You Were Meant For Me”, which Poltz co-wrote) and made me love it.
