Houston is filled with promise
Laredo’s a beautiful place
and Galveston sings like that song that I loved
Its meaning has not been erased
No politics, just music:
The Loner – Neil Young
Houston – REM
Given For You – The Mother Hips
Baby Gets High – Blake Babies
That When I Reach For My Revolver – Mission of Burma
Stop Drop and Roll!! – The Foxboro Hot Tubs
Pirates (So Long Lonely Avenue ) – Rickie Lee Jones
Fame Throwa – Pavement
Don’t Fight It, Feel It – Primal Scream
Going Underground – The Jam
…one more for Hillary Clinton because she would wanted it counted (sorry, I couldn’t help myself)
Don’t Make Promises – Tim Hardin
I SWEAR TO GOD, that is what came up and I didn’t even want to post it because I figured everyone would think it was a punch line. To make it worse, the song after that is Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands. She just can’t win.
I mean that – she really can’t.
New additions this week: April – Sun Kil Moon, The Seldom Seen Kid – Elbow, Rockferry – Duffy, and Stop Drop and Roll! – The Foxboro Hot Tubs (aka Green Day). I’m really enjoying The Seldom Seen Kid, although I couldn’t begin to describe it. The video below isn’t very representative of Elbow’s sound.
"I’ve been working on a cocktail called Grounds for Divorce"
Nice.
On another note the well-read and, at the moment, prone, mrs tbogg says that this book is "fascinating".

Last week, someone mentioned an LP Random 10. I can report that this is possible to do using a tape measure and an on-line random number generator. Algorithm available upon request. I should add that record collecting stopped some time around 1983 when grad school soaked up my disposable income, and that I was trying to build the ultimate classical music collection.
Side 1 (in keeping with the spirit)
1. “Piano Concerto #2 in B-flat major: Movement 4 – Allegretto grazioso” – Johannes Brahms
2. “Siegfried, Act 2, scene 2” – Richard Wagner
3. “Glow Worm” – Spike Jones
4. “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Act 2 scene 6” – Richard Wagner
5. “A Poem on the Underground Wall” – Simon and Garfunkel
Side 2
1. “Ave Verum Corpus” – William Byrd
2. “Piano Quintet in A Major ‘the Trout’: 3. Scherzo: Presto” – Franz Schubert
3. “Slavonic Dance Op 72 #7” – Antonin Dvorak
4. “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” – Bing Crosby
5. “Götterdämmerung, Act 1, scene 1” – Richard Wagner
Bonus (45 rpm):
A. “Up on the Housetop” – Eddy Arnold (we must have inherited that one)
B. “Symphonie Espagnole: 3: Intermezzo: Allegro non troppo” – Edouard Lalo
Oh yeah, I was big into Wagner at the time.
Checkin’ It Out – The Donnas (American Teenage Rock ‘n’ Roll Machine)
Weapon Of Choice – Fatboy Slim (Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars)
T34 – Mark Norman (Paul Van Dyk/The Politics of Dancing 2)
Cops And Robbers – The Humpers (Positively Sick on 4th St.)

Hook It Up – The Donnas (Get Skintight)
Passing Cloud – The Stooges (The Weirdness)
Sanctuary – Jimmy Van M @ Sanctuary (John Digweed/Global Underground 019)
and some bonus tracks for the double dose of Donnas & Digweed above…
Pipeline – Johnny Thunders (Have Faith)
Don’t Mix The Colors – Beat Happening (Beat Happening)
Everybody Is Going To Make It This Time – Funkadelic (America Eats Its Young)
This has been one of my favorite Random Tens, I love almost all of these songs, and it’s more representative of what I listen to.
Oh, and Paul Van Dyk called to apologize, said he didn’t want to throw gasoline on the fire; I thought that was the Humpers job…
Good Vibrations – Beach Boys
I Am Not My Hair – India Arie & Akon
The Moment Slipped Away – Christine Lavin
Only When you Leave – Spandau Ballet (I was dreading this day…ah well.)
Hodja – Todd Rundgren
Cigarette – Ben Folds Five
Ring the Alarm – Beyonce
Cliche – Todd Rundgren
Heartbreak World – Matt Nathanson
Beat the Drum – Great Big Sea
Bonus:
Saved by Zero – The Fixx
No complaints but that is a pretty nerdy set.

5-Jacksonville Skyline – Whiskeytown
6-Either Way – Guster

Yah, deech, I was rigorous about generating random 7-digit binary numbers (plus whatever it took to choose a track) by flipping coins, but eyeballed it when I had to jump 1/2^n way (or not) through a box). It’s the acme of tedium. You should have waited about 15 years to build that classical vinyl collection. I started mine in ‘99 when Half Price Books offered them for 0.25 to 1.00. I got a bit carried away – I still have cartons I haven’t heard yet – but at least I kept the Wagner under control.

I need to put a slight caveat on my book recommendation…it will likely be “fascinating” to a group of women (and maybe men) of a certain age with a love of a certain genre of music. As is the case with most books….it’s appeal has limits. But I am enjoying it immensely. However,I’m not sure Tbogg feels the same way when I keep interrupting him to read a passage out loud…

**Not sure how this got on my iPod; I must not have been paying attention when uploading that CD. I hate Bruce Hornsby and his noodling piano style.

Ah, thanks for the correction. I downloaded it from eMusic–it’s on a great compilation called Disco/Not Disco – 1974-1986–and they had the artist/title info wrong. So I sort of had to guess at the title.
Haydn60, I would be happy if the vinyl could magically turn digital. I have this dream of converting some of the stuff to CD and MP3, but never get around to it. For a while (around 1980) I was able to find some Japanese import EMI LPs with nice performances from the 1930s – Vienna Philharmonic with Bruno Walter conducting and playing piano for a Mozart piano concerto – and that sort of thing in the cutout bin for about $1.99. Of course, the liner notes are a bit difficult to read.
