A little earlier tonight than usual since we are going out for awhile to try and find some new version of a bed for Fenway.
Up until now, Fenway has been sleeping in his crate at night as part of his house training but he has almost doubled in length since we got him - he's now about thirty three inches from the base of his tail to the tip of his nose - and can no longer stretch out comfortably. Since Satchmo sleeps under our bed until four every morning at which time he hops up on the end, and Beckham, who has been there all night moves up by us, we don't think that we can accommodate another potential eighty pounds of dog and get much sleep. That, and Fenway likes to drape his body over us when he sleeps so we have serious issues.
Ideally we would just get three of these and hang them all up for the night but I don't think that's very practical, not to mention it might raise some eyebrows if our friends saw rigs like those hanging from the bedroom ceiling. Not that there's anything wrong with them...

So, you’re planning to evict all three from your bed and into their own? This promises to be very interesting. Fenway should be easiest as he is already used to spending the night in his crate. As for Satchmo and Beckham, that might prove a bit problematic.
It might be easier for you and Mrs. TBogg to give the dogs your bed and just move to another room.
TBogg, don’t ever cease with the Thursday nite basset blogging, as I’ve grown very fond of your dogs.

Please Dog, don’t! They’re already big enough! Giant bassetts could take over the world!
actually, the boys were thinking that mr. & mrs. tbogg each get one of those hanging s&m contraptions and leave the whole bed to the three true masters of the house…
our six month old puppy has just discovered the joy of sleeping under our bed — but it involves a lot of shuffling around, using her claws to motor across the hardwood floor. sounds like termites on steroids. not okay, not at all…
Thanks Tbogg. Look forward to seeing seeing the boys all week.
Our dog is too big to fit under the bed. He has, however, begun taking advantage of a (now formerly) open door to stretch out by himself in the guest bedroom.
Lucky’s a cutie!
My lab is 4 now, and has always slept in a crate at night. I highly recommend it, it was the easiest housebreaking of a dog I’ve ever done. It is her happy place, and she goes there for naps throughout the day.
Hmmmmmm. So, like, how often do you have your friends over to your bedroom?
Seriously, give it up, Tbogg. The dogs get the bed, you and the Mrs. toss some sleeping bags down in the hallway. It’s nature’s plan. Or the dogs plan. Same thing.
Satchmo is the real charmer in the family.
I can’t believe you let these beasts sleep with you.
1) acquire dog dangling device mentioned above.
(what is that thing anyway?)
2) insert basset
3) give device 3 - 360 degree turns
4) release
5) hours of fun
You could arrange three twirling Basset S&M suspension rigs around the light fixture and VOILA! The dangling “Dog-elier.”
With the right lights and music, you’ve got Cirque de Soleil right there in your bedroom! I’d come to San Diego and pay good money to see that! It’s more entertaining than the bottom-of-the-division Padres.
Thanks as always for my weekly “Aww” moment.
EIGHTY POUNDS???? EACH?????
Beckham and Satchmo each weigh in at a hefty 65 lbs, but we think Fenway will be much bigger…yes. somewhere around 80. They are not small dogs….
If you hang them up side-by-side, they’d be like one of those desktop executive timewasters with the clacky metal balls, you know? Just pull Fenway back, release, and let him swing into Satch. The impact makes Beckham swing out on the other side!
Could go on for hours!
“we don’t think that we can accommodate another potential eighty pounds of dog and get much sleep”
Since when has this been about you sleeping in that bed? Get in touch with reality my friend.
> it might raise some eyebrows if our friends saw rigs like those hanging from the bedroom ceiling
Or it might not surprise them at all, considering the frequency with which you use “limber” or “lithe” to refer to one of the occupants of the bed.
There’s a common misconception that Bassets are small-to-medium-sized dogs, based probably on their short stature. My Molokai is about 55 lbs (he’s always been quite thin and active, unusual for a Basset) and Maggie is about 60-65. Our smallest Basset was Maui, who ran about 50-55 lbs. One characteristic of the breed that’s not generally known is that they have very heavy bones. They’re also very strong! I’ve met 100 lb Bassets, though those are usually overweight. 80 lbs is not at all unusual.
