Ross Douthat is at the Aspen Ideas Festival where a bunch of smart people (and torture fetishist John Yoo) are doing some serious chin-stroking amid murmurs of "hmmmm, interesting" and "My god - look at the size of his head. It’s fucking huge."
Ross comments on David Brooks chance to shine:
My morning session here at Aspen featured David Brooks talking about the subject of his next book, which will focus on the brain, neuroscience, sociology, politics, and the intersection thereof. He cautioned at the beginning that he’s only a quarter of the way through the book, and the talk reflected that fact: It was more a diffuse collection of observations, anecdotes and arguments than a tightly-focused narrative.
So, basically it was one of Brooks columns made flesh.
A reminder once again that Times Select was more of a prophylactic than a money making scheme…

Imagine having a horrible accident, being taken to surgery, and just before administering the anesthetic, the nurse says “..and here’s your brain surgeon, Dr. Brooks” and it’s Bobo.
Yeah, that’s a “jerk awake with a strangled scream” type of nightmare.
So what, exactly are Bobo’s qualifications to natter about neuroscience? I think he’s automatically disqualified by not having much functional gray matter himself.
I listened to part of the talk, it had nothing to do with neuroscience and he looked like a stunned mullet giving the speech.
Yes, but maybe fighter pilot/POW experience qualifies him in neuroscience. Oh no, that was someone else and another job.
Bobo’s mind is aglow with whirling transient nodes of
thought, careening through a cosmic vapor of invention.
I saw this in a throwaway article on brain imaging in this month’s Atlantic: “Brooks, who is writing a book about the brain…” All the authority of a papal encyclical on human sexuality.
I anticipate that the thesis for the book will be “American’s brains are like this, but liberal’s brains are all like this. Haw haw, liberals!”
TBogg:
I find myself missing the long gone days of yore, when one had to hunt down Krugman’s columns via Technorati and all the rest were safely sealed from view by natural laziness and disinclination.
We didn’t know how good we had it then.
Epitath? I think you mean epitaph? Epithet?
Bobo couldn’t pass Sociology 101. It will be interesting to see how he handles neuroscience. Okay, not interesting exactly. Oh, you know what I mean.
EPI TAT, heh.
Tattoed onto that billboard space of noggin, “NumbNuts”.
“Dr. Gumby”.
