Mine still has buttons. Never given me a problem.

Hmmm…where have I heard this before: “Why would I need to trade in this 1999 Mercury Sable? Runs perfect!”

Oh, yeah. My dad.

I really need a new iPod.

I will say that I have (still) one of the very first iPods ever made and it’s still ticking along great. Baffling but true. I also have one of the second models and when the battery died we sent it in to Apple with about sixty bucks and they sent us back the same model with a working battery–but disconnected touch switches. So we sent it back to them for free and they sent us one that worked, finally, but had half the gig. At which point we gave up on dealing with them and just loaded the darned thing which was still bigger than I needed. It was still a more satisfying and better experience than trying to get fucking Fry’s to replace a fucking fifty dollar documentary DVD set which was scratched up when I brought it home. (We never did get the fucking thing replaced and the assholes won’t even answer my hatemail anymore.)

This is good info. Another thing to remember: don’t just give up on it - pretty frequently these things can be fixed. A friend works at Apple doing just that. (He also tells me that he’s amazed at the stuff he finds on the damn things sometimes - you have to go through them a bit to see if it’s really fixed, you know.) I’d suggest taking it to the store and at least asking if they can send it in for a checkup. I have a 2003 model (30 gig, pre-click wheel) and it still works fine. Every now and then I have to run Disc First Aid on it and that’ll correct some minor glitch or other it has developed. I think doing that on a somewhat regular basis helps keep it in fine fettle.

The new ones are pretty amazing but I like the ease of use of the older ones with real buttons, rather than the touch screen. It seems like a more straightforward way to control them.

Apple refurbs are great. I got a MacBook Pro for $500 cheaper than the exact same model/equip if I’d bought it new, and aside from a single trip to the local Apple store to get the DVD/CD burner replaced (under warranty, for a better drive in the bargain), I’ve had no problems. So I’m still about $450 better off.

Hey now, that’s the same iPod I’ve got and it’s on its last legs as well. They must have a timed self-destruct mode going over at Apple.

Are you certain it’s dead? Try some solutions like the ones recommended here:

http://www.crunchgear.com/2007.....wont-boot/

I have a 2004 60gig clickwheel model that I’ve salvaged from two seemingly catastrophic fails–it’s worth trying some repairs; mine works wonderfully now (knock on wood). I did buy a Nano last year, just in case my baby does give out and I have to wait a few months to spring for an 80 gig….

Scott Stapp/Eddie Vedder double killing made to look like suicides.

My condolences.

By the way, a piece of advice that Apple really doesn’t advertise enough, though of course you may have already thought of it — assuming you’re going to replace this, buy one of the refurbished ones they sell online. It’ll save you about $100, and if you get the two-year warranty you’ll be covered for a while before the time bomb Apple inserts in every iPod, timed to go off two months after your warranty expires, explodes. I did that with one of the first click wheel models, a 40 gig, and though the people at the Apple store laughed at me when I brought it in a couple months ago, it held up quite well. Of course, then after laughing at me they gave me a replacement model, and its time bomb just went off the other day — I’m considering a burial at sea — and now I have to give in and actually buy an iPod that will show me color and pictures and video. It’s rough being a cheapskate/Luddite.
