“Fortunately, we appear to be nearing the end of nearly three decades of short-sighted, one-size-fits-all policies that restrict access to domestic supplies despite explosive global demand. The lack of a commonsense offshore energy policy has placed this country in economic and strategic peril. Ending these bans will send a strong signal to the rest of the world that America is finally getting serious about producing more of its own energy.”

What assclowns! The wingnuts are always whining about the importance of national security. Even if we didn’t give a damn about the environment, or the cost of drilling over a mile through thousands of feet of water in open ocean where waves routinely crest over 60′ during storms, how “secure” is an energy source in open ocean?

Same with drilling in ANWR. Oil in Alaska would still be transported via the pipeline to Prudhoe Bay, which is above ground, and vulnerable to attack. Because of the cold weather, we would only be able to fix any breaks in the pipeline during 3 months of the year.

If we were to depend only on domestic production, and continue our current rate of oil consumption, the fastest way to cripple our economy would be to take out our energy sources. That’s essentially what’s happening now through pricing. If we want national security, we can’t afford NOT to use less oil, and develop cutting edge alternatives to petroleum.

Ed ”Monty Hall” Rendell (Gov-Pa) just announced today the offer of 80,000 acres of pristine state forests for plunder by the starving oil companies. This is no-holds barred pay us and do what you will to the land. Rendell (and unfortunately this is not snark) is selling this to the people of Pa with: the taxes and revenues generated by this will be used to clean up the polluted waterways and reforest the land caused by the oil production.

…And the people of PA need only look to the Southwest in WV to see how well this sort of scheme worked with the coal companies. Thanks to Consolidated Coal and others, several towns no longer have potable water, and have to purchase bottled water for drinking and washing. Just wait ’til Pennsylvanians get a whiff of water laced with drilling mud. Can anyone say CARCINOGENS?

Just sayin’….

Hatmandu Rule #17:

Whenever an orginazation needs to explain in their mission statement that they are wholly independent and objective, or is insistent that the main stream media repeat this along with every press release, place hands over ears while singing “lalalalalal” and run.
