Godlstein the Lesser takes umbrage… lots and lots of umbrage… okay, actually a whole buttload of umbrage at the idea that people might possibly mock his merry band of semiotic warriors hard at work playing Dungeons & Denotations. He parries and thrusts:
I’d like to try to clear up some misconceptions, then, since I think either TBogg deliberately misprisions my comments, or is just plain moronic. First, a person may be multiply motivated. Intentionalism doesn’t deny it, and indeed, I argue against oversimplification in this case. Second, intentionalism doesn’t mean that one discards consideration of the credibility of the author, as ought to be quite clear from many of the interpretations served up here. Third, intentionalism doesn’t mean that there may not be a larger context available into which the author’s writing plugs; so for example if Elizabethan dramatist were too obviously topical, they could find themselves sent to Star Chamber, and they had to make such references oblique if they wished to escape censorship. In short, intentionalism doesn’t mean that the author means only what denotatively he states, as ought to be very, very clear from Jeff’s offerings.
Well, yeah, we kind of got that since, for the past several years Godlstein the Elder has been riding that particular hobbyhorse until it was finally whittled down to a toothpick clenched between his butt-cheeks. But then, that wasn’t our point. But let’s roll the tape from earlier:
Now, as I’ve said, I don’t know much about this guy. I’ve never read a book by any of the three mentioned. Never had any interest, especially in Savage. From what I’ve heard from O’Reilly and Hannity, I’d say they were very pro-religious righties. Still, it seems to me that we are seeing, as commenters noted this morning, the creation of a meme that scrubs (to use the presently favored term) the possibility of anti-Christian sentiment from the meme because of the cognitive dissonance this sets up for lefties, who would rather see this as a symptom of the related clinging to religion and guns that one would naturally expect to find in backassward Tennessee.
Yes and no, since it seems to cut from both sides of the aisle as seen by this post by PW frequent commenter Serr8d who hails from Smyrna, just a hoot and a holler from Backassward TN:
Atheist madman kills two in Knoxville Church UPDATED
A church shooting today in Knoxville has claimed the lives of two worshipers.
The Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church on Kingston Pike in Knoxville was attacked by Jim Adkisson, a Powell resident, 58, a retired truck drive who lived alone and ‘hated Christianity’, according to his neighbors.
Otherwise, he was kind and helpful.
He used a shotgun, and was subdued by church members when he stopped to reload.
The FBI was investigating, in case this was a ‘hate crime’. Funny that; all murder is hate. And, Christians aren’t on the leftist’s ‘protected’ list.
"He had his own sense of belief about religion, that’s the impression I got of him," said neighbor Karen Massey. "We were talking one day when my daughter graduated from Bible college, and I told him I was a Christian, then he almost turned angry.
"He seemed to get angry at that."
Hmmph.
Here comes the money quote.
Wouldn’t surprise me if he had an Obama sign in his front yard.
h/t insty
Now…wait for it…wait….waaaaiiiittt. Okay. Now. The (update):
So, the guy wasn’t so much an Obama fan. But, was he ‘just’ a guy out hunting lib’ruls? Not so much.
This is what’s called changing memes in middle of a stream.
For those who wish to disabuse themselves of the backassward yokel meme, the rest of serr8d’s post is must reading.

Dan’s gonna drive his congregation out of the church if he keeps talking in tongues. Lets help Dan cut the superfluous rhetorical baloney done to bite sized chunks that can be swallowed and regurgitated without choking. Here’s a suggestion:
If the Left thought Right like us, we wouldn’t have to kill them.
Or maybe Gluedstein is paying him by the word to fill that empty vessel?
In fact, Christians are on the Leftists’ “protected list”, if by this he means bias crimes against people who are (or are assumed to be by the perpetrator) Christians would be prosecuted just like bias crimes against people based on any other perceived difference. I’m pretty damned leftist and I can’t come up with any legal reason that shooting Christians based on their Christianity is any different from shooting gays based on their homosexuality. The point is to kill some people, but also to scare the other people in the target group into disappearing from the public view. And while a majority group may fear less biased violence against them than a minority group, it’s all bias crime. The intention is the same, and the victims extend beyond the actual physical victims of the crime and onto everyone else who belongs to the societal subset that was targeted.
So to answer the second half of that, hate isn’t what’s being criminalized. Intentionally terrorizing more than just the people you aimed your gun at is.
It’s okay, Serr8d, you’re allowed to feel persecuted too. We’ll even defend you against people who hate you for what you believe. The fact that the people targeted were not actually Christians (yes, there’s a difference) is, I suppose, irrelevant, and if it turns out the nutjob shot them because he hated Christians and assumed they were Christians, that would indeed be considered a bias crime. Even by horrible Christian-persecuting leftists like me.
So, Goldstein committed a felony (specifically treason) and Tbogg deliberately concealed it?
These people are seriously stupid. Not Tbogg, the people who delude themselves that they are somehow intelligent because they haven’t cut their own thumbs off yet.
Wow.
Quite a reaction.
Do you guys have history? How do you find this stuff?
Oh this is precious. When he prattles ex semiotica, Godlstein’s turgid jargasms are at least some form of English. His devoted epigone here is more laughably semi-idiotic.
TBogg deliberately misprisions my comments
I contempt people who think intellectual meanings pseudo-academic prolixity, in which already pretentious nouns mutations into verbs.
I’d call MadLibs if I perceived any kind of, you know, actual thought, behind the twaddling. Of course, I’m also afraid that someone will be misprisioning my comments.
Man, those PWers are such wacky wingers. They are entertaining though.
The false umbrage. It was obvious that the killer was AntiLiberal. AntiGay. And hated the liberal Unitarians. Dan Collins self-enforced ignorance on the matter is impressive in it’s continued blinded way. But the dozens of NRA (and Nat’l Review online_) sponsored killings that happen every day in America will soon put that latest rampage in the forgettable zone except for the dead liberal’s families.
Godlstein? Yupp. He’s now on a terror, looking for addresses of liberals he can hunt down and swing his mighty hamhocks at due to his repressed semiemployment and his working out all the time (allegedly). Just another neoNazi looking for an illegal immigrant or pacifist to act his frustrations on. (In Russia, the NeoFascists are having a field day harassing and killing Asian immigrants, and with the economy in the USA getting more Oligarchic and russified by the minute…will see the Goldbergs blaming yet again the victims of their economic regime….)
Johah, specifically. Goldstein’s endorsement of Goldberg is just some sort of golden shower moment, not due to specific ethnic qualities, even though both are in the NeoCon camp. ehhhhhh, just to avoid the AntiSemitic charges that the Right likes to fling….which is like them saying Democrats are still the proSlavery parti!
I risk waterboarding now! Jonah’s and Jeff’s favorite amusement.
Uh-oh. Look out. The sensitive and manly cock-slapper is off his meds and on the hunt for fresh face.
such big words. such idiotic content.
are we sure that site isn’t a product of a pomo- essay generator ?
I must be late to the party, but why isn’t that site just called Spunky Sperm?
And when did obfuscation and a thesaurus equate to wit?
Doesn’t Jeff G. know that threats of violence transmitted on the Internet can cause someone to lose their job? Oh wait, Jeff doesn’t have a job.
Oh dear sweet spreadable Jeebus on a matzoh toast. This is incomprehensible polysyllabic incoherence squared. It does, however, support my thesis that Post-Modernism is actually a conservative plot to destroy knowledge and scholarship.
I’ve been a Unitarian for the last 10 years, and one thing that gets me about the conservative response to this shooting is that suddenly, Unitarian-Universalists are suddenly welcomed into the Christian fold, even though Christians often regard it as a cult. Remember how Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn didn’t want to classify UU churches as religious organizations because they “don’t have one belief system”?
And why this change of association? Not for anything remotely positive reasons, like inclusion . . . it’s just so that guys like Dan Collins can claim that the shooter was attacking Christians [i.e., conservatives] rather than attacking liberals. So that conservative posters can say things, well, I’m sure he would have gone to any church, thus making the violence against them, not liberals.
The victim mentality of conservatives.
And, as for Collins, the question isn’t about multiple intentions but about assigning intention willynilly to suit politics, which is all he’s doing.
Yeah TBogg, you and your closed comment section. Wuss. You just keep on hiding girly-man. If you’re a real man you’ll meet me in Balboa park, at 10, and wear something nice. Wuss.
The old paste eater is back, with a new blog post airing his revenge
strategies[fantasies] against some person who had the gall to wish him ill in the comments section. While that’s rude, he’s hardly the first person who ever had anything like that happen to him, and given his history of harassing and threatening other people, it’s hardly unexpected. His retirement from blog posting sure didn’t last long. Apparently, he doesn’t have a hell of a lot to do with his time.
Yeah, TBogg, what he said. You’re so busy misprisioning stuff you don’t even see the larger context available into which the author’s writing plugs. Why don’t you just plug your writing into a larger context available? What are you, some kind of Elizabethan dramatist who were too obviously topical? Marlowe were topical. Shakespeare were topical. Jonson were too obviously topical.
TBogg were sometimes topical, but not too obviously.
It’s getting more hysterical over there by the minute. (It seems that Jeffrey “goes away” in the same sense that a case of herpes can be said to “clear up.”)
Now he wants to find the miscreant who wished cancer upon him allegedly from an IP address at Random House because:
After all, I am a fiction writer. It would be nice to know going in which houses are not only going to reject me, but are going to reject me in their minds with extreme prejudice. (his emphasis)
He’s cranked up the “it’s because I’m a conservative” whine pre-failure. That’s being prepared, Scout!
Ok, wait a minute. I was born in Smyrna, Tenn.
Dan Collins writes like an elitist college professor!
Ok, wait a minute. I was born in Smyrna, Tenn
You have our sympathy.
I’ve been through Smyrna, Delaware hundreds of times. Never been to Smyrna, Tenn. nor Smyrna, Georgia nor the original Smyrna.

Dan and his commenters had a point worth responding to: how is Adkisson having copies of conservative books any different than Ted Kaczynski owning a copy of Gore’s Earth in the Balance. Kaczynski represents what one form of an extreme liberal or environmentalism ideology can lead to. The same could be said of Adkisson and his conservative library.
Could be.
The difference is that the extremism of Kaczynski was and is not part of mainstream liberalism or environmentalism. However, as folks like David Neiwert have documented, the violent extremism is part of mainstream conservatism. Even if Dan or some other conservative blogger criticizes the violent rhetoric of an Ann Coulter, that doesn’t mean she’s some fringe element of Republican conservativism. That doesn’t mean all conservatives subscribe to that violence, but it’s there.
Adkisson’s crime doesn’t indict conservatism per se: The man did have other mental health problems. But it does highlight the violence that is part of the popular rhetoric of mainstream conservatives.
No Von Zeppelin, Marlowe was too obviously topical. That’s why the Elizabethan secret police killed him. Well and he was a gay atheist/Catholic sympathizer
Honestly, how intellectually bankrupt does someone have to be to compare Gore’s relatively mundane environmental writings with the openly violent revenge fantasies of a Coulter or Savage?
Perhaps in some sort of deranged sense, Kaczynski thought he was carrying out the steps to create an environmental paradise, but his methods and his anti-technology, anti-academia bent couldn’t be further than what was espoused in Gore’s book. Adkisson was just doing what Savage and Coulter often say should be done. Talk about your false equivalencies.
Googlestein wrote that about you? That’s not writing, that’s a ransom note.
Serr8ted is from Smyrna? Typical. Smyrna (and Williamson County) is the “white flight” bedroom community for Nashville (which itself is only a part of Davidson County government, otherwise it would be majority black).
Hilariosity. Is that a word?
No, angel. Smyrna is in Rutherford County, home of the Nissan plant.
It’s also all sprawled, but it’s a wee bit purpler than Williamson County, home of the nouveau riche.
And nouveau country stars. Back in my day, they all lived in Hendersonville.
Because that’s where Johnny lived. And by God, they loved it.
Like being liberal in Tennessee isn’t enough with the suffering.
I have family there and good memories of the place. I’m not happy about such a guy attached to any place in my state.
