Like being liberal in Tennessee isn’t enough with the suffering.

I have family there and good memories of the place. I’m not happy about such a guy attached to any place in my state.

No, angel. Smyrna is in Rutherford County, home of the Nissan plant.

It’s also all sprawled, but it’s a wee bit purpler than Williamson County, home of the nouveau riche.

And nouveau country stars. Back in my day, they all lived in Hendersonville.

Because that’s where Johnny lived. And by God, they loved it.

Serr8ted is from Smyrna? Typical. Smyrna (and Williamson County) is the “white flight” bedroom community for Nashville (which itself is only a part of Davidson County government, otherwise it would be majority black).

Honestly, how intellectually bankrupt does someone have to be to compare Gore’s relatively mundane environmental writings with the openly violent revenge fantasies of a Coulter or Savage?

Perhaps in some sort of deranged sense, Kaczynski thought he was carrying out the steps to create an environmental paradise, but his methods and his anti-technology, anti-academia bent couldn’t be further than what was espoused in Gore’s book. Adkisson was just doing what Savage and Coulter often say should be done. Talk about your false equivalencies.

Dan and his commenters had a point worth responding to: how is Adkisson having copies of conservative books any different than Ted Kaczynski owning a copy of Gore’s Earth in the Balance. Kaczynski represents what one form of an extreme liberal or environmentalism ideology can lead to. The same could be said of Adkisson and his conservative library.

Could be.

The difference is that the extremism of Kaczynski was and is not part of mainstream liberalism or environmentalism. However, as folks like David Neiwert have documented, the violent extremism is part of mainstream conservatism. Even if Dan or some other conservative blogger criticizes the violent rhetoric of an Ann Coulter, that doesn’t mean she’s some fringe element of Republican conservativism. That doesn’t mean all conservatives subscribe to that violence, but it’s there.

Adkisson’s crime doesn’t indict conservatism per se: The man did have other mental health problems. But it does highlight the violence that is part of the popular rhetoric of mainstream conservatives.

I’ve been through Smyrna, Delaware hundreds of times. Never been to Smyrna, Tenn. nor Smyrna, Georgia nor the original Smyrna.
