Satchmo has taken a few steps backwards and had a not so good day. Off to the vet first thing tomorrow morning. I’ve moved his bed under my desk (see below) so he doesn’t have to crouch to get to it under our bed and it’s a least reassuring to me to feel him breathing deeply while curled up at my feet.
So…I thought we would go all Satchmo this week. Kinda like a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for a dog who has been such a good boy for so many years. (just click on the smaller ones)

Hard to preview with tears in eyes.
Godspeed.
Best wishes aimed in your general direction, Tbogg & family.
Be well, Satchmo. We’re all pulling for a complete recovery.
ear scritches for Satchmo and keeping my fingers crossed.
All me goil & me grandkids know of your blog is the Bassetts. We’re all pulling for Satchmo.
Get well Satchmo and best wishes to the T-Boggs. Gawd, we get so attached to our animals….I can so relate to your relationship with ‘the boys’. They really do become part of the family.
That’s a great picture on the beach with the tongue in mid-stride.
Here’s hoping for many more years of TNBB for Satchmo.
Thank you.
Satchmo has the eyes of a saint. Please feel better soon.
Aw, Satchmo. So cutely dignified. Lots of progressive healing vibes heading south; Riley and Moondoggie are donating some 9 lives Kitty Mojo, to boot.
Hugs to you all.
snuzzle to you Satchmo
Longtime lurker, former basset sister (my parents got Mandy when I was in high school)- best wishes and bunny loaves to all the Tboggs. I even have my conservative Republican parents reading for the basset blogging. Your hounds really do unite the country!
Take care, all of you.
Longtime lurker here as well (except for the Random 10- look forward to it every pre-Friday), but I had to chime in here. Love and good wishes from the middle of fly-over country, and I’m havin’ a nilla wafer for Satchmo as we speak (or type, as the case may be).
Sucks when the best on offer is that at least you have the chance to let Satchmo know how much you love him. But I’ved done it both ways, and yeah, it’s still easier aferwards if you get some warning in advance. My prayers that the pain will abate and that the good dog may still surprise us all.
Much love to you all.
Aww. Get Well Soon Satchmo.
Many positive vibes to Satchmo from the pups and us.
Offering sacrifices of dog biscuits and rubber toys to Laelaps, the God of Dogs (a hound once personally owned by Zeus himself), for the well-being of good old Satchmo.
Honorable Mr. TBOGG,
Those pills and steroids you are giving Satch are poison! You live in CA, so get yourself to a Homeopathic vet ASAP! Yeah, I know, I don’t use it for myself yet either, but I have seen amazing results in my elderly canines from these treatments. My Groucho did even worse when we gave him the pain medication from conventional vet, it sort of made him loopy and uncaring. Save your money on the pills and get some natural medication for him. Dogs are way more in synch with nature than we humans are. You will be amazed at the results you get from acupuncture and homeopathic medicine. What’s to lose? I saw cancer lesions shrink on one of my dogs due to Maitake mushroom extract! I know it sounds weird and is a hard pill to swallow for a logical mind, but somehow it really works! Believe me, I am not a freaky homeopathic nutjob, I am an atheist and a non-believer of almost everything, but over the last 23 years I have been amazed at the results of natural treatments in canines. Please, at least do a little research on it. I love dogs, and that, I feel, gives me the right to speak frankly with someone else who loves dogs. I will always regret the way I lost my earlier companions before I discovered these natural alternatives. My guess is your vet has Satch on Prednisone. Have you ever taken Prednisone? It works fine for a while and then stops being effective without increasing dosage. Try a raw food diet for your dogs and you will be so amazed at the difference that you will regret you had not been doing so all along. I am not wanting to sound like a jerk here, it’s just that someone had to be a jerk to me to get me to try this stuff myself, and now I am grateful that they did. If you can, subscribe to the publication “The Whole Dog Journal” it was the starting point for us into the realm of natural dog care.
All of my best thoughts and wishes to you, Satchmo and all of your clan.
Ah, poor Satchmo. I imagine he feels better feeling you next to him, as well.
Our feline with the compressed vertebra was given permission to sit with us on the sofa in the evenings, and she curled up next to me for about 45 minutes last night. She seemed exceedingly happy, but it probably did me just as much good.
Of course, we got this permission after our vet saw how well she was moving when we brought her in for a tooth problem late yesterday. Frustratingly awful, but the look I received when she settled in next to me last night (using my lap as her footstool as she expanded in her sleep) keeps me going and positive.
I hope all goes well at the vet today for Satchmo. Head skritches all around (including you and the Mrs).
Arthur says to say that Satchmo is the best DOG there is. And we love him very, very much.
Gentle pats and Nilla Wafers for Satchmo, hoping for good news this morning.
In Satchmo’s honor, our dog went out in the backyard this morning and peed on Mrs. Monty’s rose bush.
best wishes for Satchmo and you.
get well soon Satch – I like dogs so much more than people.
Stay cool, Satchmo. So much more mayhem needed from you.
Another Constant Reader delurking to send best wishes and many scritches to Satchmo and the rest of the TBoggses.
Please keep us posted. There is never any such thing as “too much basset.”
virtual pallets of Vanilla Wafers and all our prayers for comfort and recovery winging their way to Casa TBogg today
((((Satchmo!))))
i wuv him
big boxes of nilla wafers with peanut butter and best wishes for a full recovery.
(scratches on ears and tum for the fur child, as well)
Our tri-color Wendy, the foxhound/beagle mix (I know, sounds bizarre) sends her affection to Satchmo during his rough patch. I include my best wishes, in the rare and beautiful language I always use for my canine friends:
“U be a dood boy, Satch. We wuvs you, widdle man.” Administer loving head strokes, nuzzle the muzzle, and tell him he has a date with a tall, long-legged beauty in Ohio.
Good luck to Satchmo and the TBoggs at the vet’s.
Take a couple steps forward, Satchmo. Or else I’ll just keep breaking into tears all the rest of the day.
Humanitarian award? A good dog deserves better than an award for mere humans.
Caninitarian?
Here I am again because Satchmo is on my mind and in my heart 24/7 nowadays.
These days I am kept by two 14 year old cats I brought back to the States a decade ago from Europe—both rescued strays. But I swing both ways and miss my late lamented Airedale lots.
Oh, I so hope that Satchmo will enjoy many years.
Thanks for the pics, and do keep us posted regularly.
I hate the animals who make us love them so much. I had a cat who ripped so much flesh from me and my friends that I nearly crashed my car from crying so hard when he finally (after 16 years) had to be put down. Now I have another one, who I hate just as much, who will rip my heart out just like the other one. Damn pets.
I second that emotion….damn pets. We are still waiting to hear back from the vet but based on multiple neuroligical tests performed on the big dog which were normal, Dr.Amy thinks the problem may actually be clinical. They are in the process of analyzing Satchmo bodily fluids to find the potential source of the problem. Not sure we care any more what the cause is….just want to make it stop hurting. We’ll update you all as soon as we can and we ALL send more thanks and gratitude than we can ever express.
Thanks for the update, MrsTbogg. Best wishes to the entire pack, both those with two and those with four legs.
FYI, veterinarians don’t have to follow the same ethical guidelines as “people” doctors do. Take what they say with a grain of salt.
Smiley, may we not trust that long-time basseteers like the TBogg clan would find a trustworthy and ethical vet?
Thanks for the update (((Mrs. Tbogg)))
mad love and prayers
Our usual vet is Dr. Marvel….with a name like that, how can he be anything but an animal superhero. He has had all our bassets as well as Tbogg’s parent’s dogs and has nothing but our mutt’s best interests at heart. Dr. Amy got Beckham through his pneumonia and therefore has a special place in MY heart since he’s my boy. We have referred many fur friends to these guys and we trust them without hesitation. Only the best for da boys!
I didn’t mean to offend with my comment about vets. Nor was I referring to the vet who’s taking care of Satchmo. I also didn’t mean to imply that vets are without ethics. It’s just different with them and rightly so. As much as we love them, they’re not people. I used to hang around with a couple of vets and I know that they consider themselves businesspeople as well as pet doctors. Sometimes the recommendations they make are based on good business for them as well as for the benefit of the pet.
