While there is no defense for John McCain for linking his love of ABBA with his being shot down over Vietnam (particularly when, by extension, that’s also his main qualification for being Commander in Chief) ABBA’s Waterloo is a pretty good pop song and would have been much more acceptable answer than Dancing Queen.
Although Waterloo’s refrain of :
Waterloo – I was defeated, you won the war
…. might have been interpreted as a coded admission that we lost the war in Vietnam when everyone knows that it was totally a tie.
I guess McCain could have gone for a bit more coolness factor if he had chosen the Byrds Eight Miles High or the Animals Sky Pilot, which are more from his generation. Then again he could have really gone for the kill with Alice In Chains Man in the Box. Then we would think that he was being all broody and darkly ironic.
But we’d still vote for Obama.

The last link on the word “Obama” takes you to a scam virus site.
Actually, since McCain graduated from the Naval Academy I believe in ‘58, he’d be more of an early Elvis era music if he listened to R ‘n’ R at all. Eight Miles High and Sky Pilot would probably not have been on his iPod playlist, had there been such a thing when he was shot down.
Tbogg is ruining my mind.
I think McCain should have picked The Dead Kennedys “Holiday in Cambodia” SE Asia, a right wing guy beating a left wing protestor’s corpse with a metal chair WWE style, western complacency — if misunderstood ala Reagan and “Born in the USA” it’s perfect
Tbogg
I know this is off subject but it should give you some cheer.
The dolphins are back!
Crap!
Can’t seem to get the hyperlink thingy to work, so here it is in plain text.

I can’t believe that you had an ABBA video up here… brain bleach, please. LOL.
Waterloo… Preznit Beloved Glorious could have fucked that up too…
Well, I wonder what Johnny McThuselah’s song really is… He’s 10 years older than I am. I identify with songs from 1968, which means Aged Johnny must identify with songs from 1958, right?
With no more delay, I give you the top song of 1958. I’m not making this up, you know… (Yes, I remember it, and enjoyed it at the time, but I was only 12…)
When I said I wasn’t making that up, I really meant I wasn’t making that up… I know how skeptical you people can be…!
damn you, CNN.com !

no question. and he could definitely not have antagonized his class by going for something honest, like… this.
“On The Fields The Bodies Burning”, dad ?
Smells Like Liberty, Son!
Coolness factor for McCain would more likely be Johnny Horton’s Battle of New Orleans.
Marion, I was 12 in 1958, too! And I remember it well and loved, loved, loved that song. But it was made popular on the top 40 stations of the day by Bobby Rydell, and that’s why it was such a hit. Bobby was a teenie-bopper’s dream back in the day, and being a kid from South Philly he was on American Bandstand often, hence the national exposure.
Oh, crap. Everybody fell asleep, now, didn’t you? Sorry.
Weird. I like several ABBA songs. I’m worried now that I could be a secret McCain supporter, which would be impossible, unless it were for ABBA.
You are a true wonder and genius, TBogg, and I’m proud to have “known” you.
Man-oh-man, this guy McCain is one serious moron.
Travesty!
The cover version by Bananarama is really much better. Though it’s not nearly as good as Siobhan Fahey’s work with Shakespeares Sister.
Personally, this is the theme song that’s been on my soundtrack for the last few years.
I really prefer this version of Waterloo.
A theme song for McCain? If Wagner did trailer trash, you’d have the base!
Let’s see if this works….
