If Palin stands for anything, it’s that when it comes to both the presidency and Pixar movies, nothing good ever happens until the Stranger Comes to Town. But while our contempt for the Washington life touches everyone in the legislative and executive branches, it’s become almost a job requirement at the Supreme Court. This third branch of government is wildly overrepresented by insider lawyers with identical résumés. You can swap out one Ivy League law school for another, but beyond that, the bench is ever more populated by folks like Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, John Roberts and Samuel Alito—brilliant men whose chief job experience consisted of work for the executive branch followed by a stint on the federal bench. It’s not that these are bad qualities in a jurist. It’s just that a court that once included governors and senators and former football stars is now overrun by an elite cadre of mostly male, mostly East Coast lawyers. If ever there were a branch of government crying out for varying life experiences, it’s the Supreme Court. And if any branch of government is in need of a mother of five who likes shooting wolves from helicopters, the court is it.

From the linky:
“If ever there were a D.C. institution in dire need of a place to plug in a breast pump, it’s the Supreme Court. And Palin has already proven that neither the courts, nor precedent, nor even the Constitution itself will be a match for the force of her will. America has finally found someone suited to put the “law” back into scofflaw, and it’s Sarah Palin. McCain shouldn’t waste her talents on state funerals.”
Ooooh, mean sexist Dahlia.
Heh.
When I look at the Lithwick column and then look at these poll results showing a steady decline in approval of Palin, I think that the real problem here isn’t that every schlub in Heartland America loves Ms. Moose — it’s that the elite media loves Ms. Moose. She makes them feel like Jes’ Folks. She makes them feel that liking her makes them normal. And meanwhile, some regular Americans really like Sarah, some did really like her but are quite swayable, and some have never taken to her at all.
I haven’t seen a single poll that shows her above 55% favorable. Norman Schwarzkopf? He was at 93% after the Gulf War. Put someone with numbers like that on the ticket and I say, “Back off the criticism.” But Palin’s barely above par — at least among normal people. With journalists, whether they’d admit it or not, I sense she’s much higher.
McCain claims Palin is going to reform all of Washington DC. All of it. Wow, if you thought Hillary got a rude reception on Health Care, wait till Palin convenes her first reform session.
That’s Just What I Said
Perhaps President Obama can put that on his to-do list.
She called the Four Oarsmen of the Apocalypse “brilliant men”.
Lithwick is an idiot. No question about it.
I took it as tongue-in-cheek. But things are getting weirder every day.
Did I tell you she’s my shero?
She’s the wind beneath my tail.
“With journalists, whether they’d admit it or not, I sense she’s much higher.”
I actually give the MSM more credit than this. They’re not stupid, they know Palin is not qualified, but they are completely devoid of any ethics. They don’t give a damn about the country — see their coverage during the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq. They are totally self-centered, and it’s all about their jobs and what their corporate owners want. They just want a good story, and they can work with Caribou Barbie.
The MSM will be thrilled silly if Sarah ascends to the Preznitcy.
After reading that, I sit here, mouth agape, in awe and wonder. Every day I sit in amazement at the fact that we are all not dead.
WTF???
I read this as snark, but I guess the possibility exists that Lithwick is serious, also. Ah yes, life in bizarro Bushworld…
I saw “Burn After Reading” last night. John Malkovich says “What the FUCK!?” about 40 gazillion times.
Funny, but ultimately weak, effort from the Brothers Coen.
I have to admit that the constant “what the FUCK!” repetition in that movie got my sister and me giggling after a while. And we’re way old.
I’d say she’s being thoroughly tongue in cheek.
Governor Palin understands the fundamental tediousness of constitutional checks and balances. She knows that if a court gets it wrong, you just build a better court.
Either that or she’s traded her B-complex with Calcium supplements for Krylon Flat Black inhaler.
Oh, I don’t know…. Put her in a red St. John knit suit, with black Prada jackboots, and a hat made from some fluffy endagered critter, and Caribou Barbie would be just like Condi–only paler, dumber, and less sophisticated about the latest birth control methods. Arguably, the only person in the Bush cabinet who had “a granular understanding of how D.C. actually works” was Cheney–and the “granular” aspect was most likely due to aluminum chelates in his brain that indicate incipient Alzheimer’s! In short, Palin would look damn good at state funerals–especially if we could get her some sort of red, white and blue pageant-sash-thingy to coordinate with all of her outfits….
Um. Trust me, Lithwick is no fan of Republicans. I thought it was very funny post.
Ruthie, if you’re not already a fan of sparklepony.blogspot.com, you need to head on over. Princess Sparkle Pony has tossed her long, combable mane and pinned Sarah Palin between her hooves.
Yes, because if the court of good ol rednecks can use anything it’s a woman who can shoot other women, including rape and incest victims, in the reproductive area. Just call it court snuff porn.
SteveM:
Actually, for a Republican, 55% approval is pretty far above par these days. Take a look at George Bush’s 27%, just for instance.
At 55%, Palin’s the Republican equivalent of a “star”. Relatively speaking.
.
I think there is a major media shift under way, in substantial part powered by MSM perceiving an opportunity to regain lost credibility.
Only when the Dems are in power!
