If you’re gonna go there, you gotta speak the lingo. To blend in, be sure and say “St. JAR-ge,” and if you drive over’ta Zion [National Park], you pass through the town of “HERK-inn,” which the uninformed might think is pronounced “Hurricane.” Be sure and stop in LaVerkin, right next’ta HERK-in, where, a few years ago the city council passed ordinances requiring that eveyrone own a gun, and banning the UN from the city limits. They even had a sign at the edge of town saying so. Also, if someone disagrees with you, say “F’r IG’nr’nt!” to register your disapproval.

I know nothing about Bassetts except for what I have learned here thanks to TBogg and his boys….but I know a LOT about Jack Russells and I just read John Cole’s remarks about his family dog, Russell, passing on. We have had 4 of those terriers and they ARE the largest dogs you will ever meet. Our dog Smarty thinks she is a 180 pound rottweiler….she is completely fearless. Our puppy Jambon is even fiercer when it comes to skunks in the backyard. But, when they are not on the hunt for critters in the yard, they are the sweetest, most loving and friendly dogs I have ever had. They love people and are always glad to have visitors. And as John Cole said, they will chase a thrown ball for as long as your arm can go….and when we wear out, they will throw the ball for themselves. As Gene Hackman’s character in a movie I can’t remember the name of, said….”smartest god damn dog in the world.” I know we all love the kinds of dogs we have, but I cannot imagine having any other kind of dog than these.
