This is hilarious.
Stephen Spruiell and Andy McCarthy bitching each other out at the Corner:
In somewhat abbreviated form: you start, Stephen:
I also have to say that, for all the flak we gave her, Gwen Ifill did a good job. Of course, it’s impossible to know how much said flak put her on notice and influenced the tone of her questions. I don’t think this debate was very substantive, but it wasn’t a fiasco either.
Andy, you have something to say?
Steve, c’mon. Ifill did not do a good job. She asked straightforward questions and didn’t get in the way of the answers. If that satisfies you, I guess that’s fine. But it was an unmitigated disgrace for her to be presiding — and she is smart enough to know that, so not stepping aside was a culpable act. Will you be there when the book comes out on inauguration day, commenting, as Ifill rakes it in, that maybe she didn’t do such a great job?
And we didn’t give her flak. We pointed out the existence of a conflict of interest so blatant no MSM operative would have let anyone other than one of their own get away with it.
Tomorrow, the press will gleefully note that "even Stephen Spruiell of National Review conceded that ‘Gwen Ifill did a good job.’" And those of us who argued that the job was about more than asking questions will be painted as hysterions. I don’t expect anything different from Ifill’s pals, but do we have to help them?
Andy, I’ve seen nearly all the debates this year, and I’ve heard some moderators ask some astoundingly bad questions. But Ifill didn’t ask any obviously loaded, leading or "gotcha" type questions, and all in all she played it pretty fair. I agree that her behavior leading up to the debate — not informing the debate commission about her book, playing the race card against her critics — was appalling, and I wrote as much, and even the Columbia Journalism Review agreed that she had a conflict of interest. I agree with you on that point. And you agree with me that she asked straightforward questions. So what do we disagree about?
Andy:
Well, Steve, we disagree that she did a good job. You said she did, I think she did an appalling job. The job is about more than the asking of the questions. And the overall context here, which you don’t mention, is that the media is in the tank for Obama.
By putting your blinders on, focusing only on tonight’s Q&A, and pronouncing "job well done, Gwen," you have discredited those of us who’ve protested the unfairness of this Obamedia dominated process in which a Lefty journalist with a financial stake in the outcome of the election was permitted to pose as an objective moderator. (I’m surprised to have to remind you of this, but the applicable standard is appearance of impropriety — we are not supposed to have to judge Ifill by her line-by-line performance; her stake in the outcome means bias is presumed.)
By discrediting the Ifill critics as overwrought (which is how, I assume you know, your assessment will be taken), you undermine the argument that the mainstream press is pulling for (and slanting its coverage toward) Obama. You thus give the media the cover they crave as they continue to engage in brazenly biased reporting — you will be cited henceforth as the wise, reasonable conservative who acknowledges that the press is doing a good job and that those nutty, reactionary right-wingers have nothing to complain about.
Other than that, yes, we’re in complete agreement.
For Pete’s sake, Andy, I just created a feature for the Media Blog called "In the Tank," and Gwen Ifill was our inaugural inductee! You’re acting like I’m out to embarrass Ifill’s critics, when I’m one of those critics. I’m not trying to undermine any of the points you, I, or anyone else made about Ifill’s conduct prior to tonight’s debate. I just commented on her performance as moderator, which was probably influenced (I wrote) by our criticism of her in-the-tankness. Sheesh.
Andy:
That’s great, Steve. I’m sure the media will call you first to make sure they’re accurately representing what you were "trying to" do before they quote you. After all, when it gets down to brass tacks, they really do a good job.
Oh, snap!
I know a couple of fellas who won’t be sharing a berth, much less a cabin, on the upcoming NRO cruise.

Uh oh. Stephen didn’t put the lotion on his skin, now Andy’s gonna give him the hose again.
Absolutely right. Hannity or Hewitt should have been the moderator. Neither of them have books coming out about McCain or Obama.
Love the “she did an appalling job,” even though she asked straightforward questions and didn’t get in the way of the answers. They seem to have set the bar a lot higher for Ifill than for Palin.
JeebusGawdAlmighty, this is the most tedious campaign in history, and this conversation by these two asshats is a perfect illustration of that.
How can Steverino think that Gwen Ifill is going to “rake it in” when her book is published? She’s not THAT big of a name. It’s unlikely that the wingnuts will bulk-buy her book to push it up the best-seller list. Steve is either naive, jealous (she actually can write a book all by herself! Amazing!), or both.
That Gwen and Joe (and the viewing audience, for that matter) made it through 90 minutes of that voice and the bangs is a testament to courage and tolerance. Me, I gave up halfway through, afraid that I might start jamming knitting needles through my eyes and eardrums.
Ifill was virtually invisible, I guess she needed use seltzer bottles and cream pies to please the NRO bitches…That was probably the BEST moderation of any debate this cycle, including Leherer.
Preferred Ifill questions: “Governor Palin, can I be your friend?” “Senator Biden, isn’t it true that you eat roasted puppies?”
Clearly Ifill was an Obama plant. You could tell by the way she hounded Palin to provide actual answers to her questions, rather than meander down meaningless soundbitten paths.
Leftist poseur.
NO! The white zone is for immediate loading and
unloading and there is no stopping in the red zone.
The red zone has always been for loading and unloading
there is never stopping in a white zone.
Don’t tell me which zone is for stopping and which zone
is for loading…
Shorter Stephen Spruiell: “The black b*tch don’t get no respect around here, ’cause we knows all them coloreds all sticks together like the racists they really are.”
Shorter Andy McCarthy: Ssssh! You’re ruining our victimhood narrative! That’s all we’ve got left!
Mind you, I really enjoyed Ms Ifill’s question which forced Ms Palin to say “nucular” repeatedly. But I’m mean that way.
Tomorrow, the press will gleefully note that “even Stephen Spruiell of National Review conceded that ‘Gwen Ifill did a good job.’”
I’m sure the media will call you first to make sure they’re accurately representing what you were “trying to” do before they quote you.
“The press”? These guys think the press discussion of this question hinges on what Stephen Spruiell thinks?
Is it Rupert Pupkin in here, or is it me?
So, their thought is that since Ifill & Obama are black she will be “in the tank” for him.
Okaaayy…
Well, Ifill & Palin are women so I says that Ifill is in the tank for McCain!
tie game – let’s up the ante
Condi has said that Ifill is a great cook, since she’s been to Ifill’s house for dinner a few times.
I WIN!!!
“Enough about you, let’s talk about me now.” You gotta admire the instinctive narcissistic twist to the discussion. Never mind the issues, the candidates, the moderator or even the American people…
Just how conceited do you have to be to think that “the press” will even bother to note what Stephen S of Asshats United for War & Depression did or did not concede?
Where is Sister KJ-LO? She could moderate this little spat between the boys.
Is that Brad Davis?
Yes… OH GOD YES!!! That is Brad Davis, in Fassbinder’s final film Querelle. He plays a French sailor who discovers the masochistic pleasures of passivity through rough gay sex. I saw it when I was 17 and haven’t been the same since.
She’s in NYC. This morning she gave her impressions of the VP debate on NPR’s “Day to Day.” Apparently, she was watching the debate in Bizzaro World.
I love it when the millionaire network pundits and the trust-fund babies at NRO tell me what reg’lar Americans think. I learn so much.
Is that his Turkish “tormenter” from Midnight Express in the background?
The man in the background is Guenther Kaufmann, a black German who was fucking the director.
In the scene we’re watching Querelle (Brad Davis) has just wagered (what he claims is) his anal virginity in a roll of the dice with Nono (Kaufmann).
He loses.
I love it when the millionaire network pundits and the trust-fund babies at NRO tell me what reg’lar Americans think.
Me too. It’s as much fun as when Limbaugh, Hannity et al tell me what liberals think.
Baby please! They’re waiting for us on the Lido deck. Don’t make a scene…
Bahaha. Best caption ever.
The Rethugs have a code and it’s all for one and one for all. They just haven’t decided which one has all the authority yet. If McPalin fails you just know Steve’s gonna blame Andy.
This sentence kills
So um, Steve expected some favourable bias from her for his team? Hee.
