A lot of the reason the story didn’t pass the smell test was that common sense suggests that if a mugger assaults the victim, it is one quick blow, slash, shot, whatever, and then escape. I think we’ll find the young woman is more in need of help than prosecution. I understand the seriousness of filing a false police report but I’m hoping that common sense prevails in this case. Cutting is a symptom of deeper psychological problems. Locking her up and humiliating her only serves to make her mental state worse. I see this as more a cry for help on her part than anything else, her other coping mechanisms having failed.

Also, I don’t agree that some of the BigMedia is in it just for profits. Pox Newz lost something like $500 Million in the first five years. That was in 1990s dollars. I doubt if the motivation was profits that he would’ve let it lose so much money year after year. Has the Washington Times ever made a profit? A lot of the Repub magazines are that way too.

I think Ruturd Murdoch had enough profit from other businesses, and then he could “invest” in a news operation which pushes storylines on the electorate to keep people voting against their best interests, and voting in politicians that favor Ruturd and his BigMoney buddies in other industries. If it can generate profit, which Pox has now eventually done (not until 9/11 did it really take off), then bonus, bro!

So while they might lighten up on Obama for a bit to try to gain access, I don’t expect them to ever give Noam Chomsky or Naomi Klein a show no matter how Liberal the public becomes.

Teacher Sentenced For Hate Crime Hoax

Here’s a situation where some gal, a member of a trained McCain Youth Voting Recruitment group, creates a racist hoax in order to deliver an October surprise. While I agree that the gal likely has some mental illness (one that relates to an absence of ethical maturity), it’s also clear that she probably knew precisely what she was doing. This was a strategic act…an immoral one, though not an irrational one…at least from the perspective of the Republicans.

Case Example #1: The remarks of the director of FOX, who clearly saw politrical advantages to the “attack”, if it were true.

So give her therapy, in jail. While there she can ponder the consequences of her actions. That’s always a good thing in recognizing that one needs to change. Mollycoddling inappropriate behavior not only encourages future “attention-seeking” acts, but also suggests to others that it’s “okay”.

Consider that the police may have picked up individuals meeting her description, and processed them for a crime, when they were utterly innocent. Probably such individuals would have been harassed by the Republicans, especially if released. The gal would likely have had to “confirm” that “that’s the guy”. His background would have been dissected like a bug under a high-powered microscope. Was he an Obama supporter? Does he have any black activist background? A criminal history? Etc. Each “discovery” would be exaggerated and he would face more vilification. He would be guilty in a non-existent crime.

That’s what this could have opened up. And the racial tensions would be amped up as well…as those who defended his innocence would be castigated. How dare they defend a “criminal”!

We’ve seeen this sort of stuff before.

No doubt. No one here knows what this woman’s deal is. She could’ve done it very consciously to try to do anything she could to help McCain, since she was already out working for St. John, or she could have mental health issues, or about 5 other scenarios I can think up this moment, but we just don’t know.

As you and others have pointed out, we do know the consequences of accusing melanin-enhanced people of crimes they didn’t commit, and it’s extremely dangerous and detrimental to our society.

Reportedly, she has a history of mental illness.

As Joe Biden’s mom would say: “Bless her heart”.

Borderline Campaign Disorder: The “B” Hoax

On a cold night in –, a disturbed young woman committed an act all too common–she called in an attack on herself, stating that she had been attacked by a black man who had robbed her, and, seeing the McCain sticker on her car, in a fit of social activism somehow compatible with his immediately previous psychopathy, slashed a “B” into her face. ; that the B was, in fact, backwards–as would be the case if one was putting it on themsleves in a mirror, was no doubt meant as a literary irony, such as the “Amerika” of earlier social radicals, while the lightness of the scratching–despite his cited “rage”–was no doubt a signal of his electoral ambivalence in this tight race.

Of course, the event, implausible even to those most rabid fictionalists on right wing, was a hoax. Anyone who understands the diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder is well aware of what happened here. Extreme needs for attention combine with physically destructive behavior–most often seen in cutting one’s own skin–in an act meant to bring both outer love as it attacks inner self hate.

The act is rarely carefully planned. One of the key features of Borderline Personality Disorder is impulsivity. The act is usually spurred by rage. As a result, they spring to action, to address the immediate need, without any consideration of how the behavior will later unravel. There is simply an intense desire to address a powerful sense of abandonment with an impulsive and ultimately self-destructive action.

In a supreme irony, these characteristics–impulsivity, an emphasis on the grand gesture that is poorly thought through and ultimately self destructive–mirror the tactical efforts of the McCain/Palin ticket throughout this campaign.

Perhaps the act was wiser than it seems.

Perhaps it was meant as homage.

And this whole “mistakes will be made by 20 year olds” is just bizarre. She’s not some kid in Iraqi unsure if someone is aiming a gun at them or not. She went to PA from Texas to volunteer for the McCain campaign and she decided, for some reason, unbidden, I assume, to pull this stunt. Overzealous, but unprovoked.

For that huge amount of credit I needed when doing something when I was much younger, not as an example that, overwhelmingly, 20 year olds are sentient adults fully capable of distinguishing between right and wrong. By your logic, I would have been more worthy if I had called the cops, the newspaper and a political campaign and said that a gang of Mexicans beat me up because I was trying to teach English as a Second Language.

What was the name of the program and what city was it in? Travis County Adult Literacy Council, Austin Texas. I was a VISTA volunteer. And I set up satellite programs in libraries in East Austin. Jackass.
