The Land of Lincoln was about as safe for the big O as a state can be, but I still went in and voted. History, beeyotches: we are making it.

Meghan tries SO HARD to be the coolest indie girl evah! What with her indie music picks, “blogette,” attempts at Vice fashion (complete with a kefiyah!), and her prius-driving ways. How she can find friends amongst people with like-minded tastes as the daughter of the guy calling Obama a marxist terrorist is beyond me. No doubt some starstruck types befriended her on the off chance she’ll become the first daughter, but once that dream is shattered, who will be left?

And more importantly, who will come to St. McCain’s BBQ’s once the media stops giving a crap about the presidential loser?

Jenna and Not Jenna on the other hand must be mighty relieved. Only a few more months before that Worst President Ever talk slowly slips into the past. No matter what happens today, they are the real winners. Except for whichever one married that Young Republican douche. Happy days may still evade her.

I’m in LA — waited 2 hours this morning, in line with more people than I’ve ever seen, and ended up working at home instead of driving the 30 miles to the office. The precinct workers told me the lines had formed at 6 a.m. — an hour before the polls opened. For once in my life I didn’t mind a long wait, because it was so great seeing so many people voting! Then Hubby Dearest went over about 2:00 and was in and out in a little over half an hour, lucky him. He said they told him they expected another big wave around 5:00.

When I was in the Marines at Pendelton we used to drink on the beaches in San Diego all of the time. When did that change? I was down for a wedding in 2005 and we sat out on PB and drank all night long.

Nixon inhabited my nightmares in 1960. I was sure that because I lived in California, he and his five o’ clock shadow would come and get me. He was even scarier than the Pep Boys, Manny, Moe, and Jack.

Call me a sentimental fool, but it was thrilling to vote for him today. I first voted in 1968 for poor old Hubert Humphrey, but I haven’t been this excited about an election since 1960, when I was 13. I didn’t know much about politics then (Quemoy? missile gap?) but Nixon creeped me out (and my mother couldn’t stand him).

Sunny and cool here in Sacramento after heavy rain for the past couple of days. Much longer lines at my polling station but they moved quickly and the poll workers were tired but happy at 9 a.m. when they said they have never seen anything like it at this precinct (and one of those women has been working this precinct as long as I’ve been voting here — more than 30 years). If you’ve got a lot of rain in Southern California, that could be a good sign — it could hamper the efforts of my wingnut relatives to get to the polls. There are a lot of them, so it matters.

A little while ago on NPR, they were discussing how you talk to friends and family after the election when you were on opposite sides. General advice was be nice, don’t gloat, etc. One woman called in and said friends who are McCainiacs had told her awhile back not to contact them until after the election because they didn’t feel like talking to her since she’s for Obama. One of the guys on the show (sorry I didn’t catch who it was) said in that case, you should tell them when Obama has won that, yes, he will be taking all their worldly possessions, but the money would only be used for good — purchasing wedding cakes for gay marriages. I’m so using this one at Thanksgiving!
