Just before the election (you know.. the election? It was in all of the papers) I wrote a post about my disbelief that we were actually on the verge of electing an African-American as president. This led to some e-mail exchanges with several people who were as surprised and elated as I was. One of the emails came from Micheal C. and, as things often do with me, things went to the dogs because of that basset thing that I do. Now I’m not going to go all "send me your dog pix and I’ll post them", that’s John Cole’s thing, but Michael sent along a glorious picture of his assistance dog Rufus that’s too good to not share.
I have a particular fondness for Golden Retrievers; my parent’s last two, Hobie and Buckwheat, were two of the most wonderful and loving dogs I ever knew. We had been through Brittany Springer Spaniels and German Shorthairs (we did a lot of hunting) and they were all great dogs, but Goldens are the closet thing to dog perfection that exists.
Here’s Rufus. He’s perfect.

I like dags!
Yes, I meant that spelling; look it up.
My God of Frolic is currently sacked out, awaiting the time when he will start pestering me to take him to the dog park (about an hour before it’s actually time to go).
Well, it wasn’t in ALL the papers…

Thank you for that.
Rufus sends greetings. I’m afeared this posting of yours will inflate his pretty head. I just caught him on the phone with Podesta angling for a job. Alas, he is non-hypo-allergenic.

What a beautiful guy — and he’s an assistance dog, too? Rufus is perfect. Thanks for introducing us.
Ah yes, “Snatch”. Just recently saw it for the first time; it’s a wonderful empty trifle of a movie, and I mean that in the best sense. After”Snatch”, “Fight Club” and “Burn After Reading”, I’m forced to admit that Brad Pitt is a fine actor.
As long as we are at leisure and can enjoy conversation about dogs-
We live between hundreds of acres of a Girl Scout Camp and a Boy Scout Camp. The land is wonderful! But there are two disadvantages. One is the simple fact that some people in our consumer culture throw out dogs and cats-literally open car doors and push out unwanted pets. They are animals, right? They can live in the woods. The present census at our house is 5 dogs- 10 cats and we have run out of petless friends. The latest arrived about a month before the election…a sweet rapscallion of a puppy. He has been here long enough to earn a name: Pupperwop. But he needs a family that can shower him with love and attention. There are no vacancies in no-kill shelters so he remains with us awhile longer.
There is a great deal of humanizing that needs to occur in our new world. Some of it is as mundane as caring for pets.
I didn’t know people still did that. Drop-offs at shelters, yes, but assuming they can live in the wild after kibbles?
Assholes.
How hard to track tag numbers or somehow monitor the usual drop off places?
