In time with the season, how about a fruitcake?

I hear Al Bundy has one he’s been booting around for a few years…

AL Oh, come on! That’s not what Christmas is about. Christmas is about family and giving.
Okay, here is all the crap my family gave us last year. [Al picks up the big box of Xmas
stuff] It’s time for the traditional re-wrapping of this garbage for your family. All
except Aunt Poo’s fruitcake, [Al picks up a fruitcake, wrapped in cellophane] everyone in
the family already got that.

BUD Dad, you punted that around the house last year.

AL We’ll give it to Steve and Marcy! Has anyone picked out a tree yet?

They won’t run any corrections — they never did for Safliar (that is, Safire) after his Atta-in-Prague fantasies were debunked, because his piece was an opinion piece:

[NYT Public Editor Daniel] Okrent noted that it was hard to devise a “clear, public stated corrections policy” for columnists who are hired to express opinion. After all, Okrent noted, “opinion is inherently unfair.” Still, he recognized the need for some sort of corrections policy. And, with the help of Safire, he ended up defending a policy that–whaddayaknow!–protects Safire.

Funnily enough, this only works for righty columnists. When Paul Krugman made a good-faith cite of a portion of a Jason Leopold article in Salon, there was no opinion-piece blanket immunity for him: The Cons immediately pushed the NYT to go after him, and they pushed on Salon, and Salon fired Leopold and Krugman was made to apologize.

Here’s how I feel about Billy’s column:

I’m ambivalent. It’s been fun. It’s a lot of work. I have a lot of things going on. But I haven’t really focused on it.

In nations like India (and the United States), governments will have to call on the patriotism of citizens to fight the terrorists. In a nation like Pakistan, the government will have to be persuaded to deal with those in their midst who are complicit.

Oh shit.

Patriotism is an indispensable weapon in the defense of civilization against barbarism. That was brought home over the weekend in an article in The Times of India on Sandeep Unnikrishnan, a major in India’s National Security Guards who died fighting the terrorists at the Taj hotel. The reporter spoke with the young man’s parents as they mourned their son: “His father, dignified in the face of such a personal tragedy, was stoic, saying he was proud of his son who sacrificed his life for the country: ‘He died for the nation.’ ”

I am ordinary. I have no superpower. Please don’t look at me MrTerrorist.
