I was going through and deleting some of my old bookmarks from before the election and I came across this one by global warming skeptic, creepy misogynist, and barely a teacher, David Deming.
He certainly had the pulse of America:
The choice of Sarah Palin as John McCain’s running mate has been devastating for the Obama campaign precisely because she is everything Obama is not. Palin is not ashamed of her culture or country. She is not embarrassed by being an American, but naively embraces her birthright. Unassisted by affirmative action, Palin has risen to national prominence on the basis of her character, intelligence and natural gifts. In a word, she has guts. This is a woman who is proud of her country, not because it has granted her personal success, but because she respects what America stands for: freedom, opportunity, and individualism.
Obama is a vapid demagogue, a hollow man that despises American culture. He is ill-suited to be president of the United States. As the weeks pass, more Americans will come to this realization and elect McCain/Palin in a landslide.
We’re not laughing with you, we’re laughing at you.

Then there’s this one, hypothetically speaking, from shortly after the election.
Nothing has been more satisfying in politics for me than seeing all the Right Wing Idiots scrambling to save their dignity since Obama won. They can’t point fingers fast enough to cover all the gaffes and failures they’ve had, and it’s been entertaining as hell to see them try.
With every new Cabinet appointment, I feel like Obama has really got his focus firmly in place, and for the first time in eight years, I feel a glimmer of happiness with the path of the government. That’s a long time to wait, but it will be worth it. And the Republicans can curl up and die for all I care.
Savor.
I just wish the right wingers could be a little more focused on blaming each other. Operation Leper should be a beacon for the neo-cons: pull no punches as you blame one another for the complete failure of everything from McCain/Palin to Compassionate Conservatism. Sing with me now: “He’s a traitor, I’m a traitor, wouldn’t you like to be a traitor, too”?
I don’t so much care what you argue someone else did wrong (“how’s everything — does everything work for you?”), I just really, really want you all to spend the next few years in a heated, irrational debate among yourselves, giving president-elect Obama some peace and quiet while he tries to clean up the mess you’ve made.
The more damage y’all inflict upon one another in the process, the better. I’m talking ugly catfight style scratching and clawing, name-calling and career-ending wall-to-wall hissy fits. I want to see Jonah Goldberg wrestling Spartan-style with Mark Steyn, I want to see Malkin wrestling in jello with K-Lo (okay, maybe I *don’t* want to actually see that), and all of them pointing fingers at one another.
Petroleum geology once again makes a laughing stock of my alma mater. I really wish I knew what it was about that field that attracts so many nutjobs. Also, may I use this example (along with several nameless law professors) to repudiate the “Liberal Academics” meme? Liberal arts and social science faculty (except in political science and economics) tend to be progressives. Elsewhere in academe, it is pretty much random, except for law schools and business schools which tend conservative.
Sarah Palin’s “natural gifts.” heh, heh, heh…….
Haven’t you heard? They’re now claiming that Obama is the Bush third term.
Yes, and if I hear about “Center Right” one more time, I might explode. I think of the Republicans as spoiled children who ate all the birthday cake, spilled the punch on the good carpet, puked in the garden and then complained because there weren’t enough presents. Tough shit, kids. You wrecked the place, you own it. Time to face the music and STFU.
There must have been dozens of similar posts from the right as they enthroned Palin as the savior of the erratic, self-betraying McCain. They reminded me of destitute meth freaks snorting up any crumb that looked like crystal.
Yeah, I used to be a geologist (not oil, groundwater) and it never ceased to amaze me how many of them were rethugs, even when they clearly understood Peak Oil as well as I did. The universal response was “invade em all and take OUR oil”, which still doesn’t address Peak Oil, but does a whole hell of a lot for the tiny penis fears I guess. Maybe that’s why I left the tribe and went into the dental field. I did have a few liberal geology profs though, but not a one of those were in the O&G or mining-related fields.
T, I love stuff like this. I wish we could collect all the ‘predictions’ by the wingnuts so we could have a good laugh when needed. This is the best part of the transition.
Oklahoma, where I went to graduate school, actually has (or did have when I was there) a number of really good theoretical geology profs (at least some of whom were progressives). They must be absolutely thrilled at sharing the department with this asshat. Petroleum geology has always attracted more than its share of wingnuts and creationists. I think it reflects that it is more applied than theoretical and was always a source of plentiful well paying jobs.
The GOoPer Palin/Kool-Aid along:
I took my love(for Sarah Palin), I took it down
Climbed a mountain and I turned around
I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
till the (Obama)landslide brought me down.

I’d put Engineering in there too.
Yeah, some liberal engineers. Some conservative sociologists. You expect academics to sing in tune? Not hardly.
Definitely a tendency toward conservatism among engineers (my father was one). It is also a prime locus for creationist “scientists.” Mostly these bugfuckers are concentrated in the “applied sciences” rather than theoretical branches. There are both conservatives and progressives in all disciplines regardless of general leanings of the profession.
When I got to the factoid that Sarah Palin was “unassisted by affirmative action,” THAT’S when I snorted Diet Coke into my lap and all over my knitting. No s**t Palin didn’t qualify for affirmative action in any department, except Upscale Clothes Shopping, Hair & Make-Up, and Accessories. Also, Obama is “vapid”???
The PhD who taught the petroleum geology and related topics at my old school was also a Mormon bishop, so we used to razz the hell out of him on field trips with regard to the Mormon creationist ideas and his understanding of geology. His answer was that some aspects of theology are meant to be analogies, which is more honest that what has issued from the geo-wingers ever since. At least he was a good sport about it, though he never won any souls for Moroni out of our bunch either.
When I was a geologist I worked in consulting engineering firms; the ratio of liberal to conservative engineers per company ranged from 1:10 to 0:everyone. My dad’s an engineer too, and his level of wingnuttery is approaching the level where it will soon be hard to tell dementia from too much Limpballs. These are a few of the things I really don’t miss about that field of employ. Well, that and the laying off 1/2 the staff in each recession; that got a bit old as well. It may have been worth seeing all those winger engineers have to eat it the day after Obama’s victory though…
I thought that’s what some of the more excitable lefties were saying.
These are the guys that drive Pharyngula’s PZ Myers to distraction: They think that engineers are superior to biologists, and that the complexity of life forms means that they had to have been “designed” by a “Designer”. Myers smacks them down with great regularity.
As I tell my intro to anthropology classes, anyone who believes in “Intelligent Design” either has no respect for the designer or knows nothing about biology.
Thank FSM!
Then why is she giving aid & support to a secessionist group?
I did not know she is an opressed minority!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
gasp

cough

For some reason the non-liberal engineers I worked with always saw themselves as the absolute top of the academic achievement pile. I’ve always found it entertaining how these civil engineers felt that their admittedly tough technical education put them a few notches higher than actual scientists.
I was involved in a water law case where the idea the the hypothesis was created and then data sought to make it true (and anything that didn’t agree was ignored) was at issue; the engineers never could grasp the intellectual and scientific bankruptcy of that approach. Did not compute, ever.
Ahem. Last paragraph: replace the first “the” with “that”.
Thank you.
String, that was an extremely gratifying comment. I roomed with a pack of said non-liberal engineers for awhile at college. What a nightmare. However, I did enjoy sharing a “literature of journalism” class with a pack of techies who were taking it to satisfy their breadth requirement. How they howled at having to, you know, read stuff. And analyze it! WTF?
Gads, rooming with a pack of non-liberal engineers? What sin were you atoning for? Based on the juvenile hijinx I saw around the office(s) I worked at, I have to ask if beds were perpetually short-sheeted and toilet seats always covered with Vaseline and Saran Wrap.
The liberal engineers I worked with were fun, athletic, and open-minded; the rest of the pack? Not so much.
