I discovered Amadou et Mariam from this album, but their older stuff is shit hot as well. Lobi Traore, Tinariwen, Rokia Traore, Soungalo Coulibaly — Sarahan West Africa is putting out some truly insanely great root blues rock. Tinariwen makes my hair stand up on end.

Mali blues: it’s more than just an Ali Farka Toure segue on NPR.

Elbow! ‘Fallen Angel’ was huge in 2004. That entire album, ‘Cast of Thousands,’ is very worth a pickup.

I can’t bring myself to hate Vampire Weekend no matter how annoying they aspire to be. Just a precocious kid blessed with middling musicianship and fantastic songwriting skills. Every time I want to hate on Ezra Koenig it starts to feel too much like jealousy, so I give up trying.

I like MGMT too, but I feel a little dirty supporting hipsters from Wesleyan. “Electric Feel” is pretty gosh-durn funky though. Even though the lyrics are terrible.

As for Vampire Weekend, they well and truly suck. Not sure how they managed to fool so many people who seem to have reasonable taste.

Fleet Foxes don’t do it for me either though.

I liked the new Walkmen a lot. And the Dennis Wilson re-issue of Pacific Ocean Blue. Not something I expected to like. And a hell of a lot darker that I’d have thought.

I appreciate that TV on the Radio is getting widespread acclaim for Dear Science but I was forever ruined by their first major label release, Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes. I will always unfairly compare subsequent albums to that first devastating work.

3. Beck - Modern Guilt

tough to come up with 10 this year as new music tends to suck big time. :/shakescaneinair:
but somehow managed to purchase 10 listworthy new lp’s this year though most are doing their best to imitate a sound from 20-30 years ago. but i suppose that’s a good thing really.

wanted to give a hat tip to the best record store (yes they still exist) in the world, piccadilly records in manchester, who celebrated 30 years this year. their end of year review (.pdf link below) is chock full of bands you’ve never heard of and also includes nerdy music lists going back 30 years. totally awesome!

and remember in ‘09, disco sounds great during recessions. cheers.

Al Kent Presents The Million Dollar Orchestra - Better Days
Bumrocks - El Bum
Grace Jones - Hurricane
Woolfy Vs Projections - The Astral Projections Of Twilight
Syclops - I’ve Got My Eye On You
Hercules & Love Affair - Hercules & Love Affair
Quiet Village - Silent Movie
Eryka Badu - New Amerykah Part One
Low Motion Disco - Keep it slow
Sébastien Tellier - Sexuality

http://www.piccadillyrecords.c.....ochure.pdf
