After Action Report from the Chicago Tea Party. Eric Odom reporting:
As point man and chief organizer for the Chicago Tea Party, I must admit, I didn’t really know what to expect when I woke up this morning. I knew we had about 300 RSVPs on Facebook, but there really was no way to get an accurate reading of what to expect as far as turnout.
Today is a cold one here in Chicago. I think it was probably 15 degrees when I first arrived at Daley Plaza at 10:20 AM. It was starting to snow and the wind was picking up. When I arrived there was a group of people who had driven up to Chicago from Indianapolis who had a sign or two, but the scene was quiet and still.
[...]
I made the rounds with the Chicago Police Department… greeting each of them and letting them know our plans. I spoke to the lieutenant who had been called in to put together a strategy for dealing with the crowd, and was told, much to my delight, that the Chicago Police Department would escort us as we marched through downtown Chicago to the Michigan Ave Bridge where the speeches were to take place.
By 10:50 there were easily more than 300 in the plaza, and by 11:10 I would dare say we were 400+ strong.
At 11:15 I informed the Police Officer assigned to take the lead with us that we were ready to march, and we began our journey through the loop towards the Michigan Ave bridge.
The walk was long and cold, but the energy was high and encouraging. The crowd chanted “No More Bailouts” as we crossed busy streets and intersections, and we were met with supportive honks at every turn.
When we reached the Michigan Ave Bridge, a tea bag was broken open and dumped into the river to signify the birth of a new American Revolution.
I’m not sure which is sadder; the notion that only 400 people in a city of 2.9 million showed up to protest, or the image of Eric manfully tearing apart a Lipton teabag so that the 400+ strong could watch a teaspoon’s worth of shredded orange pekoe flutter and disperse into the wind.
Oh wait! I know what’s sadder:
At the end, I was approached by hundreds of activists and every day citizens who literally BEGGED that we do more of this, and a lot more often. And not just rallies, but collaborative action needed to get government back under control.
And, by golly, there is a way!
The Dontgo Movement is gearing up to launch an aggressive effort to help shed light on what we’re in for in the near future. And not just shine some light on what lies ahead, but also create an environment where eActivists can take action in ways that cause real change in the way government at all levels functions.
To to do this, we need your help. Yes, we’ve been able to build a true grassroots movement unlike any other (with regards to online infrastructure and no funding) without spending a dime in 2008, but there are certain things we just can’t do for free.
2,000 PLEDGES
Our goal for 2009 is to raise an eArmy of 2,000 monthly contributors. Each monthly pledge is for $5.00.Your pledge of $5.00 per month will help us build the online infrastructure and eMarketing machine needed to make serious progress.
Grassroots Fail.

An entire political movement based on the methodology of the mercy fuck. How sad.
Oh my god, I nearly fell off my chair when I read the part about the teabag. The teabag! It’s like something from Mr. Show.
There were 14.5 people (14 adults and one poor stooge child) at the local ‘tea’ ‘party’ downtown. (County pop: 220,000, and a couple of attendees drove 90 minutes for it.) I’m pissed off at the child, because I predicted 14 and she denied me the prize.
Hey, it was probably as many as 410 if you count the “supportive honks.”
It’s probably too much to ask, but, what the hell do they want?
This:
is just sloganeering. Give me a plan to stave off the 10.1% unemployment in my state (and it’s worse in the South).
You had a chance to present your policy proposals. And they failed. And people voted against you. So we got a new government.
Such is democracy.
I should of course acknowledge the possibility that their manly chest-thumping and play-acting may be an end in itself.
It’s no wonder she’s never been politically active, as she apparently was unaware that she has many representatives, municipal, county, state & federal, to whom she could impart her views, complain, or even vote for or against.
Or she’s a human parrot who has no idea what she’s parroting.
Retarded fucking fucks. Fuck ‘em. Cops must have thought they were hysterical.
Well, I know that when I am trying to get somewhere in Chicago and I get stopped by a virtual sea of humanity–like 400 people, I’ve been known to give a few, uh, ’supportive honks’.
Sort of like the Cheeto-huffing wingnuts’ version of buying a Hummer–because their health insurance only covers 10 Viagra tabs per month?
Did the grand old man of the Republican party, Gee Dubya, send them a supportive message? Maybe he was busy at CPAC? Nope, not there either.
What do they want? 2000 monthly contributions of $5 each. Hell, I’d drop a teabag in the Chicago River for $10K a month.
OK, you win. Best comment of the day.
By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to February’s breeze unfurled,
Here the embattled wingnuts stood,
And ripped the teabag that shook the world.
From hundreds of douchebags are revoltions made.
Revolutions? That’s another story.
And don’t even get me started on the number of folks who gave hand salutes!
This was The Chicago Douchebag Party.
Just add vinegar.
-G
It is priceless how these absolute jagoffs are now outraged after one month in the political opposition…By the way, I bet these douchebaggers got more coverage than the anti-war protests that were attended to by 10’s of thousands.
I saw an Oklahoma version of this event on CNN. Oklahoma, that in 2005 received $1.36 in federal tax money for every $1 in federal taxes. These are some seriously stupid people.
Sure, Okies, no more bailouts. Now give us the damn money back.
(although I shouldn’t say “us”, since Arkansas got $1.41 on the dollar that same year)
No revolution is complete without a manifesto that lists the revolutionaries’ demands. I just wonder how many truckloads of Cheetos and “Red Dawn” VHS tapes they’ll want.
oh christ Mr TBogg, when was the last time they provided you with a groaning board of inanity such as this week’s offerings ?!?!? (moronic convergence ?)
I have been a good little commenter waiting patiently, hands folded on desk, eyes front and of course you did not disappoint – I am laughing so hard I couldn’t manage more in btw guffaws than to tell the spouse – “. . . TBogg”
thanks so much.
I know we’re all about the snark here, but as someone who has helped to organize a lot of demonstrations back in the day, 400 is a pretty good turnout for a small, local organization to pull off. I’ve certainly been to demos with far fewer.
But it’s not big enough to pull much media attention, and the tea bag symbology is both sad and disturbing. They need to come up with better visuals.
400 isn’t THAT bad, I’ve seen smaller. Compared to the 9-11 truthers rallies where they are joyful if they hit a full half-dozen it’s practically a mob scene.
But compared to the many, many thousands in Chicago who showed up in Grant Park on election night though……….
Okay, am I the only one that didn’t know what the term “tea bagging” meant until Ms. Digby helpfully linked to this guy:
http://nealpollack.com/archive…..onged.html
Jeebus, I hate to think I’m as naive as those damn pukes. I feel shame.
“Illinois
NazisTeabaggers? I hate IllinoisNazi’sTeabaggers.”Cue old police car barreling through the revolution, Oolong and Orange Jasmine scattered to the heavens.
They try so hard to come up with a gimmick, and they pick “Teabagging”. Really. It’s worse than when they all went around waving tire pressure gauges and then found out that tire pressure made a real difference in gas mileage.
Stupid. The Party of Stupid.
Shouldn’t they, as a matter of principle, eschew the Internet? Wasn’t it developed by the government, on the taxpayer’s dime? I don’t remember any referendum in which we voted to approve that outlay. Socialism!
I thought we called them ‘white people’, or in a pinch, ‘crackers’.
Oh, wait a second…
I’m beginning to see the light of their logic.
By gum, if the RedStaters don’t want to pay federal income taxes, then I say make them exempt. Of course, if they aren’t going to pay for federal services, they will not get any federal services. None. Zero. Nada. Disaster relief? Sorry. Medicare? Nope. Veteran’s aide? Forget it. Oh, and forget the military completely. ALL bases will be closed in those Red States, so good luck there! OH, and we’ll close the federal prisons, to boot! Just open those doors and out the prisoners will go. Coast Guards, bye bye!
Basically any and all federal offices and assistance will no longer be given to these freeloaders.
Think of all the money we taxpayers will end up SAVING! Our economic crisis will be solved in 2 years time, if not sooner!
Well, it was invented by the Defense Dep’t., the exception that proves the rule of “No, no, we don’t need your money, we still have shoe leather we can boil for sustenance!”
The teabag reminds me of the cluelessness of the Lawrence Welk show’s presentation of Brewer and Shipley’s One Toke Over the Line..
Be sure to watch to the end when the accordianist calls it, “…a modern day spiritual.” ISYN.
Oddly, I can’t find any mention of this at either the Sun-Times’ or the Tribune’s web site. Both papers do cover the story of an Ohio woman who was ticketed for breastfeeding and cell phone talking while driving. What do 400 wingnuts have to do to get any attention around Chicago?
400?
I wonder what the police count was.
‘No taxation without representation’, eh? I guess we can finally ask all the permanent residents (green card holders) and H1-B visa holders and the sundry diplomats who earn in dollars to not bother paying any taxes.
I know I would have loved to have that option way back when.
Follow the money.

Okay, it’s a little less shady than the authors describe, but entirely plausible that DontGo is poorly-done astroturd.
I apologize if everyone already read this
Remember to T-Bogg the tea baggers before they T-Bogg you!
A half-written song: Teabag Party (to the tune of TV Party)

Teabag party tonight!
Teabag party tonight!
Teabag party tonight!
Teabag party tonight!
We’re gonna have a teabag party tonight!
Alright!
We’re gonna have a teabag party alright!
Tonight!
We’ve got nothing better to do
Than eat some Cheetos and have a couple of brews
All our friends are gonna hang out here tonight
Alright!
We’re gonna pass out on the couch alright
Tonight!
We’ve got nothing better to do
Than complain on the computer and have a couple of brews
Don’t talk about anything else
We don’t wanna know!
We’re dedicated
To our favorite clowns!
We sit glued to the T.V. set all night
And every night!
Why go into the outside world at all?
It’s such a fright!
We’ve got nothing better to do
Than lurk in the basement and have a couple of brews
The MSM doesn’t show what it’s really like out there
It’s a scare!

And so on…
What might be most delicious of all was their reliance on the Chicago Police, whom they propose to throw out of jobs by rejecting the government spending to keep them employed while we work through George’s big mess.
came back to the fdl homepage from tbogg’s place, cracking up, unable to post a comment that makes it past my ‘censor’…… only to find it here again….
rofl tbogg.
the ‘left’ has had a few ‘marches’ with silly endings, too, but the lone teabag torn and emptied into the river is in the running for the most ineffective illustration of a movement that i’ve ever heard.
so, to sum up my possible unmentionable comic remarks winging through my head—
symbolic marches with symbolic ends usually don’t have a climax.
there.
rofl
endings. not ends. although the ends are symbolic, too.
tearing apart a Lipton teabag so that the 400+ strong could watch a teaspoon’s worth of shredded orange pekoe flutter and disperse into the wind
these were manly wingnuts so there can be no doubt that the tea bag was full of strapping caffeinated black tea, not orange pekoe.
About 200 of these morons stood in the rain in Atlanta yesterday. . .the rain that Gov Moon Pie prayed for LAST year!
Here’s a repub Tea Partay “Ice Tea in the Parlor, Makes the Ladies Holler”
maybe it was ‘oolong’

No federal or interstate highways, no airports … they’ll have to stay on local roads.
No TV or radio either – those are public airwaves.
funny.
Where were these people who now “needed to get government back under control” during the wates of lives & treasure in Iraq?
Win a f…. election. That’s how it works.
sad
but some folks are still grieving
the above mentioned people have moved beyond the denial stage to the anger stage
They will get over their loss ,someday
(sigh) Please don’t say that (”retarded XXXing XXXs”). Actually, it’s the “retarded’ part that’s offensive. My brother, an adult who has mental retardation, and his peers are deeply hurt by this kind of use of the word. It’s in precisely the same category as the “n” word for people of color.
My brother works, pays taxes, votes. He loves his community and his country. Please don’t use his condition against him this way. He is a kind, considerate, loving person. He is entitled to respect, not derision.
Thanks!
How do you like your kindle so far?
We are going to try this link In any event, the St. Louis version brought 1000 people to the riverfront and was talked up by a local radio host.
The link was broken.

And if you include the hand salutes that included only the middle finger of the saluting hands? Big Time Numbers.
400 people? Gosh, maybe we should just hand them the keys to the White House right now…
click on the ‘home’ button to see the art this group of ‘disabled’ people puts out.
http://www.passionworks.org/about/index.html
in the featured artists forum bios are both disabled and not. this month’s featured artist is not. artists volunteer to help out/assist, so, the what the clients create-the art is theirs. they even have a cd where they wrote the poems and local artists did the music and recorded it. it’s fantastic. called ‘get up and fly’. wonder if it’s on youtube. i’ll look.
the menu across the top gives you an idea of what they sell. it is fantastic.
many of my friends and family have purchased their flowers and tiles.
i have a few necklaces, as does my sister.
amazing place. have thought about volunteering there. friends have worked there.

Big Pharma Quietly Hikes Drug Prices 100 Percent or More
Friday, February 20, 2009 by: David Gutierrez, staff writer
Key concepts: Drug prices, Big Pharma and Pharmaceuticals
Put these turnout numbers up against the massive, world-wide turnouts in March 2003 pleading for George W. Bush not to start his war against Iraq. There were tens of millions on the streets then, and it has been proved they were right if not successful at the time.
I hate to say this, but the chowderheads actually stumbled onto a potent symbol for the youth.
As has been noted above, “teabagging” has a sexual definition. Beyond (and descended from) that, “teabagging” is an insult that is used in online video games, specifically FPSs (First Person Shooters, one of the most popular genres currently in America). After shooting an opponent, the shooter rapidly crouches up and down over the downed character . . . giving a crude simulation of sexual “teabagging”.
To tens of millions of young Americans, “teabagging” is the strongest “fu@k you” they know of.
So, even though the TeaBagging Parties are laughable in their symbolism, hearing “Republicans just had mass protests where they teabagged Obama” might sadly impress young clueless voters (”They teabagged Obama! Cool!”), and I mean LOTS of them.
This rediculous stunt might actually work out for them thru sheer stupid luck.
Good link. (I think.) It seems well documented to me, and makes a convincing case that this “movement” at least was pre-planned.
Slow getting back here. My brother is staying with me this weekend and we were trying to figure out if there’s a movie worth seeing today.
The kindle is way fun, for starters. It does so much incredible stuff, I am mind boggled. An instant dictionary definition by placing the cursor at any word in the text. Font size adjustment to suit individual needs. The capacity to highlight (and easily access vs. either going back through a book, page by page, or as is more often the case with me, never bothering to go back at all for the things that I thought were boffo when I read them). The capacity to leave notes anywhere in the text (as in “note to self:”).
Started reading “Shock Doctrine” in bed last night. So easy to manage!! Easy to page forward, page back. When I stop reading and shut it off, it will bring me back to where I left off when I resume tonight.
So, I think I’m going to love it. But I feel absolutely disloyal to my wonderful “real” books, past, present, future. I imagine I will be reading some of them. For starters, I don’t think you can borrow books via kindle. *g*
PW is up at the mothership./
maybe it was ‘oolong”
.. or maybe “toolong”
Oh, dmac, this is absolutely wonderful!! I just sent the link to my brother’s service organization and also to a couple of folks I know at our local Arc. AND to one of my brother’s staffers. She’s an artist in her own right, and I’m guessing she will totally love this, too. Dunno if there’s anything like it around the Twin Cities, but I’m about to find out. My brother loves to do art. He has limitations, but IMO, he’s pretty darn good. And with something like this . . . well. Thanks. Just thanks!!
Thanks. You’re the thrid here who loves it. Marion is another, can’t remember the thrid right now.
anything for you mah dear….an honor.

Not really. Check this out: http://www.playboy.com/blog/20…..abber.html
The entire thing was pre-planned, and produced with money from big business and the Koch family. And, Mr. Santelli’s contract was about to expire. Now, with the help of a few lies and money from the wealthy, he’ll keep his contract with CNBC and the Merc. I’m so sick of the lies, the fake news and the tactics of the criminally wealthy.
I find it hysterical that these wackos went to the police for protection. What were they expecting? The whole town/city to react to them? Are they kidding? No showed up and no one cared what they had to say! Their fear is an example of how their minds have been working about the stimulus plan. It’s made up.
they may seem funny now, but hubris has killed more than 1 movement. Look at the rethugs, they believed that they would rule forever. Hubris.
I always suspected the repuglitards was a bunch of teabaggers
now you know why they adopted the “Wide Stance” platform ???
the “Octogenarians against teabagging” group was making ugly threats
and they swing those cans and walkers with deadly accuracy
Teabagging? Fuck, I didn’t know they had read Neal Pollack waaaay back when… Perhaps they can get some tips from Lynne Cheney.
Douchebag-i-ness knows no bounds, does it?
Here’s a video of the fun: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_WYGjqSRck
