Supreme Court Justice John G. Roberts, Jr.:
Roberts’s hard-edged performance at oral argument offers more than just a rhetorical contrast to the rendering of himself that he presented at his confirmation hearing. “Judges are like umpires,” Roberts said at the time. “Umpires don’t make the rules. They apply them. The role of an umpire and a judge is critical. They make sure everybody plays by the rules. But it is a limited role. Nobody ever went to a ballgame to see the umpire.” His jurisprudence as Chief Justice, Roberts said, would be characterized by “modesty and humility.” After four years on the Court, however, Roberts’s record is not that of a humble moderate but, rather, that of a doctrinaire conservative. The kind of humility that Roberts favors reflects a view that the Court should almost always defer to the existing power relationships in society. In every major case since he became the nation’s seventeenth Chief Justice, Roberts has sided with the prosecution over the defendant, the state over the condemned, the executive branch over the legislative, and the corporate defendant over the individual plaintiff. Even more than Scalia, who has embodied judicial conservatism during a generation of service on the Supreme Court, Roberts has served the interests, and reflected the values, of the contemporary Republican Party.
Roberts was the conservative wet dream candidate: candy-shell on the outside, Robert Bork on the inside. He is the child who has never colored outside the lines. He’s a courtier for the rich, the powerful, and, most importantly, the white. He’s the smiling face that hides a cold heart.
He’s everything they ever wanted.

That picture sort of sets my gaydar buzzing…
And yet, “entitlements” is used to refer to programs that might just help the less-fortunate lead a life just that little bit less sucky.
Americans use English in the darndest ways…
This is always the worst danger inherent in any prospective RepubliKKKlan presidency.
Even catastrophic fuckups like the Afghanistan and Iraq debacles at least have a chance at being corrected by a new administration (naturally Kool and the Gang are still fucking us over on those. Way to go Dems!)
But not the courts. And especially not the Justices of the Supreme Court. They don’t go away until they’re dead.
In my outspoken opposition to the Nader candidacy of 2000 I heard the bullshit slogan “Not A Dime’s Worth Of Difference” over and over to the point that I wanted to either kill them or myself just to make it stop.
So now we’re stuck with Alito and Roberts. And Roberts is a very young man.
Where’s your fucking dime now, Naderite slime?
Fixed it. No charge.
And what the heck is that photo supposed to be?
Funny Wheelie Diva
You know, Roberts is a few years younger than me and I never saw anyone dress like that. Maybe they did and I just looked for the denim, I don’t know. Not the kind of look that would attract.
He certainly does not have an interesting intellect or background. A mediocre writer at best.
He’s an activist judge who re-wrote the constitution by changing the Presidential oath at the inauguration… Is that a dead crustacean or are you just happy to see me?
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Except for the thousands of same-sex couples who can’t do the same…

might be time to revisit the only diaries obama ever wrote at dailykos:
Tone, Truth, and the Democratic Party
Thanks for the feedback

Citizen cornsympinko:
We of course do still have Ralph to kick around and the Naderbots will never open their eyes to reality…what is bothersome, however, is that by being such an alienating dickhead, Nader drove overyone away from the left wing of the Democratic Party and his batshit crazy politics poisoned the enviornmental movement for decades.
Amen Brother Norske !
Impeachment of any judge appointed by a president that has committed treason and has used his office for high crimes. Will we have law and order again?
They’ll have what he’s having.
For a long, long time. Mmmm, Mmmm, Good.
Lying for the greater good is all part of their M.O.
I’m sure he thinks he’s doing God’s work.
He’s the ultimate Stepford Wingnut.

Thanks TBogg.
The political landscape has been polluted for years. Dumping on Nader is merely a feel good knee jerk reaction to the impotency of real progressive, never say radical, change in the good ole U.S. of A. When the shit hits the fan in late 2009 the only organized opposition will be of the far right. Leftists (can one say “leftist” in the U.S.?) are destined to merely scramble for the borders.
My gaydar is not very good, but I’ve had that feeling about Roberts right from the start.
Ooooooh. You have a point, I’m getting that feeling, too. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Except in a Republican who denies gay rights, gay marriage, etc., while denying his own feelings. How many anti-gay yet closeted Republicans are there, anyway?
There’s a lot wrong with that. A closet homosexual (which I believe he is) is ripe for blackmail. And no one here thinks that Cheney/Rove are above that sort of thing. They very likely have a nice set of photos to keep Roberts in line. A dream justice, for sure.
One wonders why a supposed straight arrow like Roberts would wait til he is 41 to marry Jane who is well beyond child-bearing age and then adopt two children. One can discern that Jane, the beard, “also in her forties” is probably more than a bit older than Roberts.
This power couple has created (not thru procreation) the perfect family image.
Now, understanding that love is blind and all that – it could be possible that things are exactly as they appear to be. However, from what has been learned about the deep bench of self-loathing, closeted (or otherwise hidden from public scrutiny) gay Republicans surrounding the Bush Dynasty, I think Roberts is as gay as Larry Craig, Condi Rice or the Pope.
Personally, I thing we should constrain our criticisms to his opinions/rulings. Whether or not he is gay is completely irrelevant.
I also don’t accept the potential blackmail argument. Straight pols or justices are also often at risk of blackmail. This should not be used as an excuse to pry into their private lives.
It’s not the irrelevant if he’s in the closet. Re-read what I wrote. I certainly don’t care about his sexual preference but I care a great deal if he’s trying to hide it. I just picture Rove and Cheney deliberately seeking someone they could own. It’s there m-o, isn’t it?
The missus is also a big wheel in a group called Feminists for Life. Their fair-skinned children–trotted out in Necco wafer-colored outfits when Daddy was confirmed to the court–were purchased. There’s a place in Fort Worth where healthy white newborns go to people like the Robertses and the Bushes (Mr. and Mrs. Marvin). The website is to cry over. The teenage birth mothers probably will never live in a place that plush ever again. It looks just like the Houston Galleria. And that college (?) photo of John made me go Hmmmm.
I suppose one could say, well, nothing wrong with that if you’re straight and you’ve got the scratch. But it bothers me that this couple marries late and just waltzes into picture-perfect familyhood hey presto. It just does.
As near as I can figure out, they’re the same age, now around 54. Jane graduated from Holy Cross in 1976.
It’s about the hypocrisy. Republican forced-births policies and anti-gay discriminatory policies are promulgated by closeted gays who live their lives wealthy and free as they impose their Neanderthal doctrines on the rest of society. They need exposure so that they may be seen for what they are.
Being “out” versus being “in” is a personal choice. Hiding one’s preference is not a crime or even a breach of conduct.
In any event, this is just idle speculation that cannot lead to any constructive endeavor. What do you propose, that a petition be started urging Roberts to clarify his sexuality?
If I might play devils’ advocate, if we were to eliminate all the public officials guilty of hypocrisy there would be precious few left.
Repressed sexuality (closeted homosexuality) has been one of one of the most destructive lethal forces unleashed in the last 50 years – especially when it becomes part of the Oligarchical power structure – as with these psychopaths: Rove, Cohn, Hoover, McCarthy, Rice…etc. Roberts represent this self-loathing ilk in all of it’s despicable glory.
Society would be much better served if it were to finally come to grips with the damage that is caused by religious fueled bigotry and stop this insane sexual-facistic persecution – if only to prevent more of these tightly wound, hell hath no fury, masochistic monsters from continuing to wreak their havoc on what’s left of this country laws and institutions.
I say this as a disgusted Gay man…yet again watching another one of my own kind radiating the their inner pain – outward – to anyone who is unfortunate enough to be in their path.
Make outing your sexuality the new litmus test for SCOTUS. /s
I guess I’m not being clear. I suspect that BushCo has used blackmail to keep repubs in line. I suspect that they deliberately recorded phone calls and did a number of other things to ‘own’ those that they needed. And I’m not just talking sexuality, they’ve probably used the hint of corruption even more.
Remember Foley saying that he wanted to retire from Congress “but Rove wouldn’t let him”. What did he mean? Did Rove have him by the balls because of the intern scandal? Or did Rove threaten to withhold a cushy job until after one more term?
Think Vitter. He became much more vocal in his support of anything Bush wanted after his scandal.
Think Chuck Hagel. Hagel called a press conference to (supposedly) announce his candidacy for the presidency. Then nothing was announced. Not then, not ever. What happened?
On the flip side, we have Spitzer and Siegelman. You either go along or they will destroy you. They’ve spent 8yrs getting the goods on people and they know which ones they can own and which ones need to be eliminated.
Your gaydar buzzed, my gaydar just registered 17.593 on a scale of 1–10. I don’t know who the dude in the middle is, but I haven’t seen a porn ’stache like that in years…
Republican Charlie Crist had been outed by a Tampa Florida reporter before he was elected governor. It seems that Crist was a regular at The Blue Iguana, a popular gay bar.
There was that one report and nobody touched it. Now Crist, who had lived with his mother for years and never bought real estate, has finally married (a woman). He is expected to glide to victory as a “centrist, bipartisan” Republican Senator. Few of the voters know that he is a gay hypocrite from the Bush Family school of Republican disaster.
You’re so right. You could not be more correct. Good examples, all. They had (have)the goods on most everyone that matters. Anybody got any dirt on them they got it on file. Files on everybody. Cheney did files. Rove did files.
They’re the political children of J. Edgar Hoover. [spit] The only difference I can think of is that only Hoover was a cross-dresser…
Crist was a well known patron of the Green Iguana, a gay bar in Tampa, Florida. The bar’s owner, Rick Calderoni, claims Crist was openly gay when he hung out there before starting his political career.
I think the filename of that picture says it all.
Don’t know about all y’alls, but the first line in the quote on my screen says:
Those other guys look awfully content.
Can I just extend another hearty Fuck You to the gang of 14?
Fuck you, Joe Lieberman, Ben Nelson, et al. We’re going to have to suffer this cold-blooded bastard after you assholes are all dead and buried. Fuck you, you fucking fuckers.
Aside from setting off my gaydar worse than being at Castro and Market on Halloween, Roberts reminds me of Arlington Hewes, President of TPC.
Here is the real deal:

Hey, this picture isn’t the inspiration for that scene in “American Pie” is it?
Just a thought.
Dirty fucking pigfuckers, the whole fucking lot of them.
Labeling them”Pigfuckers” is uncalled for.
It’s insulting to pigs, not to mention fucking.
I just heard that The Right Honourable Conrad Moffat Black, Baron Black of Crossharbour’s appeal has been accepted by the Court, with an eye to defining what “honest service” means. Might be interesting to see if he follows the pattern here: does he rule for the corporation and its shareholders or in favor of a hard-right tool?
