I’ve spent the evening doing that thing I do, which is exploring the nooks and crannies of, if not the wingnut mind, at least its byproducts. And I just have to say that the nomination of Sonia Sotomayer to the Supreme Court has made these people, as my grandmother would have put it, ‘lose their shit."
Apparently the notion that "elections have consequences" hasn’t sunk in yet.
While you have some Republicans playing it close to the vest until their pollsters tell them how they’re going to vote, the base in concert with talk radio, wingnut welfare havens like Commentary, National Review, and the Weekly Standard, and the usual gang of blog idiots are going to go after Sotomayer hammer and tong…and I think that is great.
Among the many many many Republican miscues of the past eight years, I’ve always believed the one that made the American people sit up and take a long hard look at the Republican party was the Terri Schiavo case, when the elected members of the party became unwitting dupes of their own lunatic base. My sense is that, if they really want to go after and beat up on this Sotomayer, who presented herself very well this morning, they will pay for it at the polls for years to come. Not with Hispanics, who were lost to the party dating back to the Pete Wilson days (not that the peck-sniffier elements of the right can help themselves), or with women, but with people for whom "empathy" and compassion aren’t qualities to be sneered at.
Nicely played, President Obama.

More on empathy (OK, he called it “compasssion”):
The speaker? Sen. Strom Thurmond. The nominee? Clarence Thomas.
Apparently the notion that “elections have consequences” hasn’t sunk in yet.
Lush, July 5, 2005:
I’m tired of these Democrats acting like they won the election. Somebody needs to stand up and say, “When you win the election, you pick the nominees. Until then, shut up! Just shut up! Just go away! Bury yourselves in your rat holes and don’t come out until you win an election. When you win an election, you can put all these socialist wackos, like Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer, all over the court, but until then, SHUT UP! You are really irritating me.”
I so agree about Schiavo. That and Social Security which DC will have to learn once again the hard way is not to be f’ed with.
Hey, you can edit your comments? My appreciation for FDL just went up 2 full notches. Now if you can only get them nested.
Well, in the first place, Obama could find a cure for cancer and the wingnutz would find something to complain about.
It is so gratifying to see the Republicans caught between a rock and a hard place on this one.
Nice historical quotations cobericus and HammerinHank. Funny how things come back to haunt.
This has already been pointed out by a.o. the Rude Pundit, but still, here’s George H. W. Bush statement on the nomination of Clarence Thomas in 1991:
“I have followed this man’s career for some time, and he has excelled in everything that he has attempted. He is a delightful and warm, intelligent person, who has great empathy and a wonderful sense of humor. He’s also a fiercely independent thinker with an excellent legal mind who believes passionately in equal opportunity for all Americans. He will approach the cases that come before the Court with a commitment to deciding them fairly, as the facts and the law require.”
“…Obama could find a cure for cancer and the wingnutz would find something to complain about.”
Based on past actions, that’s a certainty. Cf., Guardasil. Okay not a “cure”, but even better. It’s “thwarting God’s will” or some such nonsense.
They whine, they complain, it’s what they do. If they didn’t, no-one would pay them any attention at all, and baby would have to pout and hold his breath ’till he turns BLUE! and DIES! Wahhhh!
If you think of the wingnutz as cranky spoiled 2 year-olds that are desperately in need of (a) a time-out (b) a pacifier and (c) a nap it makes a lot more sense.
Jeeebus Krispy Kreme on a Kracker. Pat Buchanan is all over MSNBC.
Just what the viewers need, huh? The perspective of some 80-year-old Nixon Administration holdover. Thanks Morning Joe, you’ve got me watching “Malcolm in the Middle” re-runs at 7 a.m.
And speaking of KKKrackers, Jeffery Beauregard Sessions is apparently the go-to GOOPER in the Senate. Er, Fail much?

This accounts for the high blood pressure, sadly.
That byproduct being mainly the pasty, hair-filled sludge you clean out from behind your refrigerator every year or so. Fear and self righteousness will only get you so far in life. People have real problems now, more so than any time in recent memory. And when they do, they don’t want the neighbor who wears the bow-tie, black socks with shorts, and gets drunk on wine-coolers at the block party to be the one to handle them.
I was just thinking the same thing. I hope the Republicans go completely apeshit and throw everything they can think of at Sotomayor. It won’t change the outcome, and it will further damage their credibility.
I do feel badly that Sotomayor, who is a class act by all (informed) accounts, will have to endure this process, but she’s a tough customer.
Could we get Kimball’s commenters to speak at Sotomayor’s confirmation hearing? That would the best theater ever! Maybe Jeffrey Rosen could lead them in a chorus of “She’s dumb, she’s racist, she’s sexist!” It would be like the Watergate hearings, the revealed pathology of the conservative mind.
None of us voting women have ever had the guys at work treat us like we’re dumb on account of having a vagina, so this should go super well for them.
The balls are fuzzy
I looked at a few of the opinion summaries on Scotusblog. It must be the heightened wingnut sensitivity that can get anything “very liberal” out of them. With Alito you could look at a few random opinions and see that he was within the four
amoscorners of the law, but each result was very conservative. (You don’t really want to write “amos” when Alito is Catholic. That almost sounds like plunger.)Truly the rethugs will not stop with this faux outrage/bedwetting/floor pounding until their self-immolation is complete. Anyone got a spare lighter handy?
OK, ladies and gentlemen, somewhat hidden, Fabrice Santoro has played his last match at Roland Garros for the year, and possibly ever.
Friction, baby, friction! The fun lasts longer, and you don’t leave that suspicious trace of accelerant behind.
Are you kidding? They’d start yapping about how all those survivors are going to put even more of a burden on Social Security and Medicare someday, and show clips of a tearful Marlo Thomas wondering what she’ll do now that there won’t be a yearly St. Jude telethon. Oncologists have to give up their Beemers, &c. What next from that Indo-Islamo-Hawaiian fiend? Ruin the HIV-suppressant drugs industry by developing a vaccine for that? He’s just doing it for the homo vote!
Rush’s latest rant is that Sotomayer is a “reverse racist.” By tomorrow I suppose he’ll have accused Obama of “pandering to diabetic-American voters.”
What Al Franken said.
Holy crap: Strom + Thomas. What a dynamic duo!!!
Note also that “smarts,” intellect” and “brain-power” were nowhere to be found in Strom’s “requirements.”
Oh, I nearly forgot: he’s from South Carolina.
It really does crack me up to see these pissant Senators, for whom My Pet Goat = the AP English exam, declaring Sotomayor “not qualified.”
You’re 0 for 3 on spelling, TBogg. I noticed because I’ve been practicing my pronunciation, an issue for someone who reads rather than listens to the news. When he’s leaving I learn it’s “Sooter” and not “Sowter.” Luckily Supreme Court justices rarely come up in my conversations.
oh yes Mr TBogg, I have been chuckling about this since the announcement – they really can’t help themselves. can they ? clearly some of them have already figured out they’ve been played and there’s nothing they can do about it but watch the crazies burrow down to a firm 17%
There’s something more crazy going on — the wingnuts are claiming that all the Chrysler dealers who gave to the GOP are being closed and the Obama donors are staying open. http://directorblue.blogspot.c…..tions.html
Nate Silver has already pointed out that Republican car dealers outnumber Dems by about ten to one. So it’s no surprise there’s so many more of them on the closure list. But the wingnuts will go on screaming. Apparantly basic counting is yet another skill they lack.
