An abashed Ed Whelan makes a full apology to publius who graciously accepts, so we officially lower the Whelan Threat Level from "asshole" to "occasionally dickish when provoked".
John Hinderaker, however, cries "Never give up! Never surrender!"… or something:
Anonymity is the curse of the internet, and the principal reason for the dismally low level of discourse that generally prevails online. Which is why we have absolutely banned anonymous comments from our experimental comment system. In my opinion, the idea that a goofball like Blevins has some sort of "right" to smear Whelan anonymously, without taking responsibility for his assaults, is ridiculous. Be a man, for God’s sake. Or, for that matter, a woman–you don’t see Michelle Malkin, say, scurrying out from under a rock to issue anonymous attacks. If you can’t muster the gumption to say who the hell you are and stand behind your words, my view is: get lost. You have nothing to contribute.
Pointing out that Michelle Malkin scurries out from under a rock and smears people for a living (but under her own name, by god!) is kind of a bonus. It’s important to remember that Hinderaker has already played and lost the "I Am Lawyer, Hear Me Roar" homegame back when he was intemperate before intemperate was cool so it would appear that he has yet to complete the healing process.

That said, I think you’d be hard pressed to prove that it’s any lower than the level of discourse elsewhere — case in point, your brother-in-retardation, douchehat at the NYT, “writes” under his very own name, but with no apparent editorial oversight, and sucks like a mighty Hoover.
Exactly. A name can still be a pen name, thereby preserving anonymity, yet appear to be a real name. Lewis Carroll, John Le Carré, George Orwell, and Voltaire all agree. A Hindrocket by any other name is still an ass.

I read that Power LIne post this morning, and automatically thought it was Ass-Missile. It bears all the stylistic marks of the dude. Overheated, under-thought, buffoonish, bluster. Remarkably, it wasn’t Hinderaker at all, but instead the equally insane “Paul” who wrote the piece.
Jesus, I’ve been using D. Sidhe so long most people think it *is* my name. If I were to post under my legal name, you would know *less* about who I am than if I posted under my internet name. For that matter, my legal name wouldn’t tell much of anybody who I am because it’s not the name I was born with, either, having changed it a couple times.

As for Ed Whelen, he apologizes nicely, but that doesn’t get you out of the felony rap. Neither does forgiveness from the victim, although that does mitigate during sentencing.
