What’s not to like?

Face it – about 45% of the population would vote for a flat rock if it had an (R) on it, but even the Repugs of 2008-20011 (two thousand-eleven) have to be smarter than to allow her to be nominated. Their “leadership” are all twats, but surely there are normal people in the middle of that wasteland who can see what kind of supernova a Palin candidacy would be?

Obama won, but by a shockingly small margin considering the utter crappiness and criminality of the previous administration.

Obama wasn’t running against W; he was running against 1) an experienced politician who still had quite a few people convinced that he was a “maverick”; 2) someone who was one of the most instantly popular candidates for national office ever, and remained so despite her numerous drawbacks; 3) numerous PUMAs who apparently would have voted for Satan as long as he had a woman on the ticket with him; and 4) an astonishing amount of undisguised racism (as well as more that was disguised, thinly, as “birther” bullshit and the whole “secret Muslim” thing). And, for all that, he won with the “shockingly small margin” of 192 electoral votes and 10 million popular votes.

Palin has two arrows in her quiver: her “just plain folks” act, which took some major hits with her RNC-financed shopping spree and the numerous perks that she’s taken advantage of while governor, and using her family as human shields, which Obama is too smart to run into. All he has to do is call her on her bullshit and point out her flip-flopping on fiscal issues–being for the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against it, making a big show of turning down fiscal stimulus money that she later took–and she’ll go down in one. (Seriously, if she did run I can easily see her skipping out on the presidential debates after the first one, probably insisting that one of the kids had a cold or something.)

The country needs a viable opposition party, the current Repubs are not it, and Palin would only delay the ability of sane conservatives regaining power.

The DINOs are opposition party enough. As parties get older, they get more crusty with self-interest and beholden to big money interests. Liberals/progressives should split off into a new, more populist party and let the old corporatists keep the Democratic party. It would change the meaning of bipartisanship and move the Overton window our way. It’d have to be done while the Repugs are flailing, though.
