THE PROBLEM WITH EXTREME RIGHTWINGERS…

…is simply that they focus too intensely on dangers. For example, they see the towers falling on 9/11 and obsess about it until they think America is in danger of collapsing too. Then they think moderates must be blind: “Didn’t you see the towers falling? Don’t you see Muslims repressing women?”

The solution is to patiently and repeatedly point out that America is invincible at the moment, that bombing Iraq and Iran kills women, etc.

Their habit of focussing on dangers is also obvious in the gun-control debate. “If they take our guns, then we’ll be defenseless against all the dangers out there.” The solution is to ask why people in other countries with low gun ownership feel safer, etc. (Not that I’m against gun ownership.)
