According to Gateway Dumbshit Jim Hoft, the AARP (which is just like the Shining Path but with more walkers) is losing members:
Leftist Organization AARP Loses 60,000 Members Over Obamacare
60,000 Americans have cancelled their AARP memberships over the leftist organization’s support of Obamacare.
Wow. That’s a lot of oldsters who are going to have to be Trotsky ice-picked by the death panels for their counter-revolutionary activities. Obviously the AARP is about to crumble just like the Berlin Wall. Or maybe not.
The membership loss suggests dissatisfaction on the part of AARP members at a time when many senior citizens are concerned about proposed cuts to Medicare providers to help pay for making health care available for all. But spokesman Drew Nannis said it wasn’t unusual for the powerful, 40 million-strong senior citizens’ lobby to shed members in droves when it’s advocating on a controversial issue.
[...]
The approximately 60,000 number represents members who specifically cited AARP’s stance on the health overhaul debate in canceling their membership between July 1 and mid-August, Nannis said. He said that on average AARP loses some 300,000 members a month, but he couldn’t say how many more members had quit for other reasons in that time period.
He said AARP gained some 400,000 new members during the same period and that 1.5 million members renewed their membership.
The Revolution will not be televised. On the other hand, Murder She Wrote and Golden Girls will be seen at their regular times. Oh that Estelle Getty, she’s such a stitch…

AARP has been soliciting me for membership for over a year now and I’ve resisted joining because, dammit, I’m not that old yet. But I guess it’s about time to make it 400,001 new members.
Also. Blowjob.
The AARP leadership must be really rattled: they’ve lost over one-tenth of one percent of their membership over this one.
Some of the comments on Hoft’s site are hysterical. I don’t think it would be that hard to get Ginger to come home with you after bingo.
I wonder, will all those seniors invited to rip up their AARP cards also rip up their Social Security and Medicare cards? ASA, formerly NASCON, supports Health Savings Accounts instead of Medicare, unregulated free-market health care, the elimination of progressivity in the income tax, in other words, the whole über-con magilla. The idea that the AARP, which is essentially an insurance services broker, is in any way “liberal” is laughable, but at least it supports Medicare, Social Security, importing pharmaceuticals from Canada, etc. which all actually benefit seniors, or at least those who aren’t wealthy.
Make that 60,001. Bob Novak died.
The line to piss on his grave starts behind me.
While we weren’t looking, the Greatest Generation turned into the Mr. Angry Man and Mrs. Crazy Teabag Hat Generation.
Let’s see…60 thousand out of 40 million is…0.15 of 1 percent of AARP’s membership. Some “hemmorhage,” eh?
OK. After I piss on Novak’s grave, I have a moral dilemma (not about pissing on that bastard’s grave, that was easy.) I have been “qualified” to be a member of AARP for several years, but have resisted their siren call because I have always believed their was something unseemly about entitled “seniors” organizing to demand even more than their fair share. I despise senior discounts. I despise the sanctification of the aging boomer generation. We have always been a bunch of hedonistic, selfish fucks. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But all of those gomers screaming out of their dentally-challenged mouths at the the town hall meetings in opposition to health care for all, is making the AARP look almost rational. Personally, I favor putting us out on the ice-floes when we are no longer useful. I will soon qualify for this consideration. Personally, I favor death panels when they are able to rid this country of my more egregious peers. But, that isn’t polite. So, now I must actually consider joining the AARP in order to express my commitment to universal affordable health care for all? Boy, that really sucks.
Yeah, but you get great discounts with Avis and LaQuinta!
Well, it is some impressive “hem-and-haw-orhage” at least.
Leftist Organization AARP Loses 60,000 Members Over Obamacare
Now the AARP is a “Leftist Organization” (In caps, already). It’s come down to characterizing any organization that isn’t batshit insane as “Leftist”.
“Leftist Organization the Boy Scouts of America…” Because Che Guevarra wore a beret.
“Leftist Organization the Friends Church…” Quakers won’t fight in a war ya’ know.
“Leftist Organization the Red Cross…” Because they give shit away to people who haven’t earned it.
The list goes on and on. With so many lefties undermining our values and polluting our precious bodily fluids I’m just amazed that Single Payer seems stone dead.
I wonder how many of those 60,000 resigned in protest ,as opposed to those that resigned to go take a long dirt nap ?
I have had people over the years claim this same thing about AARP being “Leftist.” Shows how far BigMedia, Lush Limpbaugh and friends have shifted the “center” over the past few decades. We’re making some progress, but I won’t be happy until we get that pendulum swung so far to the left that Russ Feingold is considered the “centrist” that he is.
Media Matters had a great takedown if this, including their misleading “up to 60,000″ cite.

But that only tells you what you would guess anyway: it’s a big fat right-wing disinformation piece that CBS News swallowed and then stenoed hook, line, and cut-up card.
So while it may not be unusual for the AARP to “shed members in droves when it’s advocating on a controversial issue,” there’s just no real evidence that it has in this case.
In a related story, CBS News has learned that Mickey Kaus still has not denied blowing goats.
And how much membership did the GOP lose over the past year or two? What percentage?
Why does this sound like the Black Knight telling King Arthur “oh, you’ve got a nasty nick there! Surrender?” while three limbs are off and arteries spurting.
I just can’t wait tell the conservitards taunt us with “come back here! I’ll bite your kneecaps off!”
I resisted joining AARP [even though they offer some nifty discounts] because of their crap on Medicare Part D.
Their whole philosophy seems to be “seniors ahead of everyone else.” They don’t give a damn about kids, or about the uninsured, or poor folks. Just them and their fucking social security checks & Medicare.
I won’t support them with my membership.
I am SO with you on this one. Too bad it’s not politically correct.
Sorry for quibbling, but I was looking. Actually, I can tell you the exact moment it happened; you see, I was on the phone in a small office downtown, making calls to tell people how great Barack Obama is…
Oh, it gets better, TBogg. ASA is a transparent GOP front organization. Details here.
Wingnuts learn about statistics from the Fox network where, as the Daily Show demonstrated last night, 98% of Fox viewers agree with Fox commentators 100% of the time.
While I am pleased to see them backing the public option, AARP has far from a stellar record on supporting progressive policies.
Out of curiousity, do you think this would work with a purely wingnut audience? Bobby McFerrin says it works with every audience he’s tried it on but an audience of only wingnuts…what are the chances of success?
Yep. As I’m overly fond of observing, if Richard Nixon was alive today they’d be denouncing him as a commie-lover.
March on Washington for healthcare reform on Sept. 13th. Pass it along. The people united cannot be defeated.
Puravida and others. the husband and I have also resisting the blandishments of AARP.
Look, perhaps with the loss of the wingnuts, those of us eligilble (alas) should join en masse, we _can_ make a diffenrence. Or maybe we can just fuck with them. Either way.
Already done. In 1972 John G. Schmitz (John Birch wingnut extraordinaire) ran on the American Independent Party ticket (best known as George Wallace’s party) because of Nixon’s visit to China.
Schmitz received more than a million votes. Only commies go to China, you know.
Even grading on a wingnut curve, the Gateway Pundit is an idiot.
I wonder if it would help if I joined and then wrote to them every day complaining about their policies. No doubt I type faster than Mrs. Crazy Teabag Hat, but then again, I have a life.
