It’s the right and wrong part that’s gotten lost. I just read that piece on the MSNBC site about stopping the shackling of pregnant prisoners giving birth. One of the women – a nonviolent offender I think – who gave testimony described how she was shackled at the arms, legs and with a chain around the (pregnant) abdomen while giving birth. What kind of guard could conceivably think that was anything but gruesome torture? And in what kind of country is such a medieval thing permitted in 44 states, with New York struggling for years of judicial reform to get rid of the practice? The mentality that gave us the National Torture Policy, the Muslim Pogrom Movement, the Wall Against Mexicans, the Drown the Surplus Population Disaster Relief Policy, the Birthers and the Deathers is alive and well, from sea to shining sea.

In Oklahoma, we had our own little, mini 9/11. Some family members of victims were consumed with hate, and every turn of the trials the local teevee stations would get them on camera. You could literally feel the heat coming from the screen. But there was this one guy whose son, a toddler was badly damaged in the blast. The reporters would check on him from time to time and he never knew the status of the trials or anything. He said any time he would spend fixating on McVeigh or Nichols would be time not spent with his family.

How do you think George Bush deals with the fact that his wife killed someone in a car accident, too? I said in the thread Teddy was deeply flawed in any number of personal aspects early in his life especially. But he also took those flaws and turned his life to bettering things for people who had less than he did, for the voiceless, for the children in this country, for the people who had been passed over by special interests.
