First off, thanks for all of the suggestions from last week, I’m still going through them, and hope to add the best of the best soon. So let’s get on with tonight’s randomest of the already gots-est. Or something.
Town Called Malice – The Jam
Get The Funk Out Of My Face – The Brothers Johnson
Wolfman’s Brother – Phish
Red Tide – Neko Case
No More Sorry – My Bloody Valentine
Sail Away – Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
The Way We Make A Broken Heart – Ry Cooder
Breathe Underwater – Placebo

and one more: You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch – Aimee Mann
Well, who doesn’t have that one?
My iTunes Top 25 Most Played informs me that I have listened to Grank Funk Railroad’s We’re An American Band 101 times which is one more time than I have apparently played Superfly.
This cannot be right.
This must be wrong.
Please.
Also. My next door neighbor woke up at 4am recently and spent $150 buying the entire Time/Life Flower Power collection (in the Collector box!). He is going to loan it to me to load onto my iPod.
Consider yourself warned.

“He is going to loan it to me to load onto my iPod.” Uh, tbogg, wouldn’t that technically be illegal? I mean, not that I give a shit, mind you, but if the RIAA hit men come n’ get you and lock you away forever, then where would I get my daily snark? Anywho, as you were, gentlemen…

Bowing to your fondness for covers, here are a couple I listen to frequently. Don’t know if they quality as offbeat (but if their versions resonate with you, then they’ll be offbeat enough).
Sweet Jane – Cowboy Junkies
Cold, Cold Heart – Norah Jones
I gather that jazz is not particularly your thing, but there’s a jazz guitarist named Joe Pass who’s done some really nice covers – he has a quite a few solo CDs out including a series called Virtuoso – that might seduce your ear. Don’t forget to check out his joint CD with Roy Clark (yeah, that Roy Clark but listen before you laugh).
I think I already have all of those Flower Power Collection songs, purchased song by song, album by album, as they went on sale back in the day. It’s amazing that you can buy them today for only $150, and without the hisses and pops of a diamond stylus tip running in a dusty vinyl groove!
Dig on the “Soft Sounds for Gentle People” series of hippie reissues if your so excited about the time/life series.
