Abigail Thernstrom explains that the multitudes of Teabaggers contains a smaller but no less important multitude of Negroes equal to half of all of the Negroes in America, so watch yer ass, Nancy Pelosi and Black Man John Lewis:
What will it take to persuade the political class to abandon its racism-is-still-everywhere picture? It remains a politically promising strategy; it certainly worked in 2006. But playing the race card may not be such a swift idea when it comes to tea partiers. A just-released Gallup poll found tea-party members to be quite representative demographically of the American public at large — the exception being blacks, who comprise only 6 percent of participants. But 6 percent is about half of the black population! A real surprise. Lewis, Pelosi, et al., take note.
You have to extrapolate and do other math stuff. Also carry the three….

Another person stupid enough to be a teablogger. I’ll bet Abigail can dazzle us with her knowledge of macro-economics, too. Here’s the bottom line Abi…whatever % of blacks admit to being tea partiers-
(1) The 6% might have thought this was a social poll on pot smoking.
(2) The % willing to attend a public TP demonstration is 0, plus or minus….which pretty much proves they aren’t masochists.
Abigail Thernstrom – spit.
Enough said.
So, she’s basically saying that, based on this poll, half of all black voters will be voting Republican in November.
Um…
Hmmm…
OK, I figured it out. Instead of drinking the tea, she’s smoking it. That’s the only possible explanation.
Wow, that is painful. One of these things is not like the other…
But – but – tax cuts for the rich raise revenues, too!
so. let’s get this straight. out of 28% of amurcans self identifying as teabaggers, 6% are black. (furiously punching numbers into calcumalater, tongue sticking out side of mouth, carrying the three)…equals .0168%. which equals half of the black population and the downfall of pelosi? jeesus, this sounds like mcardle math. them conservatards might want to reconsider that book learnin thing.
Big words like “percentage” & “population” are hard for Abigail. But they do both begin w/ a “p,” so what’s the real difference?
What do you call a meeting of teabaggers?
Tea Cozy.
No false equivalence here: 6% : 3,000 bullshit, culled republican poll respondents = 6% : 300 million Americans. Horsehit.
Look at this pair:

Look at ‘em.
about the husband:
golly, i wonder what he said…
And this woman is vice chair of the United States Comission on Civil Rights?
Abigail is totally right. The Tea Party is like the Black Panthers, yo, and Sarah Palin is the second coming of Luther X King Guevarra Chavez. It’s really the inbred white xenophobes who are the minority in that UN-esque melting pot of multi-cultural compassion and understanding. It’s only a question of time before the Tea Party takes over the work of the NAACP and the ACLU.
Riddle me this: name one candidate running in 2006 on a platform of “racism is still everywhere”? Loons.
Oh, isn’t that sweet, she’s a good friend of John “stache!” Bolton. I’ll bet PammyTits thinks this twit is the shiznit.
I believe this comes under the heading of “wishful thinking.” We really really really really REALLY wish we had more black people, but since we don’t, let’s PRETEND! This gal is taking the whole anti-intellectual thing just a bit too far. OK, let’s go over this one more time; 6% of our organization is black (yeah, sure…and I’m the Easter Bunny), but since 6% is half of the total population of the country, that means we have like….124% of everybody! Q.E.D.! To use a hoary Internet meme; teh stupid, it burns!!!
Binkyboy beat me to it. I was going to quote the same sentence.
So, in addition to its being an award that John Bolton “qualifies” for (the bar must be set pretty low), this is an award “for Outstanding Intellectual Achievement”?!
I guess there was no math on that test.
Water — > Monitor
What in the holy hell could possibly be the criteria for that prize? Being able to beat a clinically retarded schnauzer at a game of Uno?
Or is Uno too complex a game?
You know, the only politicians I can think of who believe “racism is still everywhere” are nationally respected RNC leader MC Steele (who is black, so of course he would know about that kind of thing) and Barak Obama, who is, of course, the racist in chief (just ask Glenn Beck because he’s a well-known expert on that kind of thing).
Friendly advice to all home schoolin’ tea baggers:
Cut the daily “Jesus and the Dinosaurs 101″ course from three hours to one and up the “Cipherin’: Using All Your Toes” to more than ten minutes.
From their web site:
That would explain a lot.
Aw c’mon, I thought by “pair” you were gonna… but you dinna… Instead I get snaps of the two curmudgeons in the Muppet Show balcony. Thanks for nothing.
There are only two times I can recall seeing A (as in one) black person at a TeaScrote protest. One time was that one guy packing a gun (who was actually there as a shill with a right wing radio show) and another time when a teenage girl was selling “don’t tread on me” tshirts and some senile old hillbilly started chasing her off screamin “She’s Acorn, she’s Acorn”. That’s it. Half the population huh?
They’re trying so hard …
… when in fact, of course, 6% black people means that the Tea Party is HALF as popular among black people as anything else. (That’s assuming that the 6% figure isn’t inflated, which it
probablyis.)This is even less skilled than yesterday’s “OMG 40% of teabaggers are Dems or independents!” which of course overlooked that a) 27% of teabaggers were independents, which in 2010 means “Republican but afraid to say it” and b) 80% of the country are Democrats or independents, so if you wanna play that game I can too ha ha.
Tomorrow it’ll be something else …
Wow, innumeracy abounds.
You know, 33% of my team at work is Chinese, and since there are 1.3 bln Chinese people, I lead a team of 5 billion!
I thought the number for teabaggers was 17%. Whatever, I find it hard to believe that even 6% of teabaggers are black.

Dear Abigail:
Marge Inoverra stopped by from NPR’s Car Talk and said to tell you to look at your introductory stats book. A subsample of Paperbag+Americans in a national poll is likely to be pretty small, and maybe +/- much more than the usual 3 percentage points.
At least as rare as the sighting of a P+A at a tea party rally (not as hard as finding a racist-in-the-act-of-spitting, since P+ness is a state of skin, not a momentary act) is a one of these people saying ‘racism is soo last month or so.’ Despite your academic cred, I’m inclined to trust their verdict more than yours.
PS Is racism-is-over wishful thinking the new Republican pony?
One leans to the left, the other to the right, so I guess that makes them fair and balanced.
And, yes, this is what passes for intellectualism for conservatives – supposedly intelligent people pulling stuff out of their asses, because they know it will play to the Fox masses.
And thus I partially forgive [John Lewis]— but only him — when he is quick to see racism in an angry white crowd.
Bless her heart.

Some things the NYT reviewer said about the Thernstrom’s 1997 book “Black and White.”
Oh, Reality. Why to you refuse to support my fantasies?
She doesn’t express it well, there’s a 33 1/3% chance I’m going to show my own innumeracy here, and it doesn’t help her case at all, but I think she’s talking about proportions instead of absolute numbers.
If 12% of Americans are black, then a random sample of tea-baggers would show that 12% of them are black. If 6% of tea-baggers are black, then the number of black tea-partiers is a non-trivial 6%.
That wouldn’t show that tea-baggers aren’t racist, though, because there’s no meaningful relationship between ‘racist’ and ‘non-black.’ It’s reasonable to assume that blacks are not racist, but it’s not reasonable to assume that all non-blacks are racist; nor is it reasonable to assume that half of blacks are racist; nor that, if half of blacks are racist, then 44% of non-blacks are racist. Furthermore, if all of that were true, then her point would be that no more than 44% of tea-baggers are racist – which is, I’m pretty sure, not the point she’s trying to make.
then her point would be that no more than 44% of tea-baggers are racist – which is, I’m pretty sure, not the point she’s trying to make.
Uh-huh. And she made it so well, too!
I think it’s 1.68%.
Lessee here, 6% of participants and participants are 28% of population, then 6% of 28% equal 1.68% of population are black and support teabaggers. . . .
Still seems high to me.
