Representative Peter King is kind of squishy on that whole 5th Amendment thingy:
Rep. Peter King (N.Y.), the top Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, wants to know whether the Justice Department consulted with the intelligence community.
“I hope that [Attorney General Eric] Holder did discuss this with the intelligence community. If they believe they got enough from him, how much more should they get? Did they Mirandize him? I know he’s an American citizen but still,” King told POLITICO.
Which is why the Founders, in their infinite wisdom, loaded up the Constitution and Bill of Rights with lots of qualifiers like, “more or less”, “kinda sorta”, “close enough for government work”, “whatev’ no biggie”, “if it’s cool with everyone”, “mulligan!” and “doesn’t apply to Muslims”.
You can look it up….

“U.S. citizens cannot be tried in military commissions, which is what Republicans prefer for terrorist trials…” And for teh gays. And atheists. And people who don’t buy enough stuff at WalMart. Or who refuse to carry concealed firearms. Or who can spell. Anyone, in other words, who isn’t one of their buddies on Wall Street, in charge of Big Oil, a teabagger, or works as a mercenary in one of our many, many successful overseas adventures…
WTF? McCain has argued that it would be a ‘serious mistake’ if the guy was read his rights. Is McCain actually trying to get him off?
I never knew that McCain hates America.
After that big bullshit about trying Khalid Sheik Mohammed in New York, what are they going to do with this dude who is a) an ‘murcan citizen and b) from Connecticut and c) committed the act in NY City? Ship him off to Gitmo and try him there?
Peter King is one of two or three Republicans in New York’s entire ~25 member Congressional delegation, and arguably even there he stands out.
There are no words in the English language that sum up someone knowing that what they’re suggesting is completely wrong as the words but still,,. It can be used everywhere to avoid the obvious negative implications of anything.
I’m know he’s an American citizen, but still,
It’s wrong to kill people, but still,
I was always into girls, but still,
I was never one to put on two wetsuits with a dildo in my ass, but still,
I’m not for the rape of young boys, but still,
My free advice is, if you have to play the but still, card, you’re an asshole and you should shut the fuck up.
That pesky, outdated Fourth Amendment reads:
Weird how they don’t say “The right of citizens,” in’it? Damn thing applies even to non-citizens and suchlike. Even illegal immigrants get constitutional protection. How screwy is that?
McCain, like moth to a flame, manages to inject himself into a story totally unrelated to himself. Spotlight whore.
And Pete King? Why would you ever think that the Attorney General would consult with ‘intelligence?’ I mean, are you a communist?
“doesn’t apply to Muslims”.
I believe the operative term that the founders used was “Musslemen” or “Mohammedans,” as in John Adams, in the Treaty of Tripoli, declaring that “America is most definitely a Christian nation, you betcha” and “we will bomb the heathen Mohammedans back to the stone age, as soon as we develop the necessary technology to do so.”
Yes.
Because, you know, in NYC, we can’t have traffic affected or the residents bothered near the courthouse during the trial.
Shorter Mayor Mike et al.: Screw the Constitution, my personal comfort, and that of my campaign donors, is MUCH more important.
Yup. Plus, it means your argument is shit and you know it. But still. I really wish he would have finished that statement. But still what, Peter King? As for Grumpy McCain…*shakes head in disgust*
There’s your first mistake right there. In greater Wingnuttia, the 2nd and 10th Amendments are the only parts of the Bill of Rights that matter.
and ..too also ..what did sarah palin have to say about this?? i only ask becuz she seems to be the only hack missing from the roll call of the usual suspects ..
but still .. lol [that was an excellent point Crusty..kudos ]
With Congress critters like these, Al Qaeda can keep skimping on the good fertilizer.
Some people say that Peter King is an intelligent, rational lawmaker, but still, I find him to be the biggest fucking asshole on the planet.
Watch fer it but don’t bet “yes” yet. The Vegas line is 8 to 5 on “yes” but you’ll get better odds as soon as Obama appears to say that a Gitmo trial is unthinkable. You gonna remember your friends when ur a millionaire?
In equally entertaining news, the new “hiking the Appalachian trail” would appear to be “lifting luggage.” I so absolutely love the smell of hypocrisy in the afternoon…
King does have a long association with terrorists but still probably thinks different rules apply for his terrorists
From his Wikipedia page, so you know it is right
“In the 1980s, King frequently traveled to Northern Ireland to meet with IRA members. In 1982, speaking at a pro-IRA rally in Nassau County, New York, King said: “We must pledge ourselves to support those brave men and women who this very moment are carrying forth the struggle against British imperialism in the streets of Belfast and Derry.” A Northern Irish judge ordered King ejected from the former’s courtroom, describing him as “an obvious collaborator with the IRA”. He became involved with NORAID, an organization that the British, Irish and US governments accuse of financing IRA activities and providing them with weapons. He was banned from appearing on British TV for his pro IRA views and refusing to condemn IRA activity in the UK”
Rules 1 & 2, TBogg. Fear us.
Peter King takes homeland security very, very seriously. That’s why he presided over New York’s portion of funding being gutted so the money could go to protect the popcorn museum and roadside pet zoo in well-known terrorist target Bumfuck, StateWithAnIncumbentRepublican back when he was the head of the Homeland Security Committee.
He’s got a safe seat, though, in a white flight suburb, and he’s pretty much our only national Republican from south of the Appalachians, so we’re going to keep hearing from him. It’s not going to make any sense, but it hardly matters.
Yeah, I get it out of uberwingnut Peter King, I’m actually surprised he leaves a tell out there like the “but still”, but McCain, not that he’s ever been the mavericky paragon of principle, but WTF? I know everyone in Arizona seems to think the Bill of Rights is fucking hilarious, but how do you go all the way to “Miranda is for pussies”?
Also, WTF America? When did we completely stop giving half a shit about the constitution and the rule of law? The American people support indefinite detention, torture, stopping all brown people and frisking them for birth certificates, tasing teenagers on the field at the ballgame, etc.. I feel like I turned my head and most of America got so scared they shit out their entire brain.
The accused homicidal maniac is from CT. Joe Lieberme is from CT. Ergo, J. Low Lieberman should be blown up.
This has been a crash course in Pox Newz logic.
No Mr. Davidson, I fear for you.
It gets worse. It seems Lieberman wants to amend an already terrible law to allow citizens to be stripped of their citizenship automatically upon being charged with a crime of terrorism with “enemies of the U.S.”
sounds a bit fascist to me……..
I’m not touchin’ that one; but I will say he’s rapidly heading toward “un-American.”
McCain’s idiocy is bad enough, but Lieberman has outdone himself and the erstwhile “Maverick.”
And just to stand us all on our heads, did you hear thatGlenn Beck (Glenn f***ing Beck???) told his fellow Fox “newspeople” that you don’t deprive people of due process just because they’re suspected of terrorism. (I’m paraphrasing, but.) The world has gone stark raving mad! (Jon Stewart was in pain, having to introduce the Beck clip)
Shit, this is way, way too close to charging someone with Thoughtcrime. I’m an old guy and I was really hoping to be dead before we got around to this.
Founders, in their infinite wisdom, loaded up the Constitution and Bill of Rights with lots of qualifiers like, “more or less”, “kinda sorta”, “close enough for government work”, “whatev’ no biggie”, “if it’s cool with everyone”, “mulligan!” and “doesn’t apply to Muslims”.
All of which makes the Constitution somewhat popular, right?
They just want to be able to arrest, torture and execute anyone they want, at will.
Beating up little old ladies is wrong, but still..
“Is McCain actually trying to get him off?”
You really want to put it like that? Because eight seconds after reading that I was feverishly jabbing at my eyes with a teaspoon to make the images go away and now I’m blind. Lucky I can touch-type really well.
I guess we know by now how Republicans would have reacted if 9/11 had happened on Al Gore’s watch.
