Jonah Goldberg, who is America’s Foremost Expert on Fascism, would like your attention for a moment while he explains what this whole racism thing was about.
Ahem. First off, Jonah believes that Shirley Sherrod should get her job back because a grievous wrong was done to her but, you see, it was actually a big misunderstanding because Andrew Breitbart, who is Jonah’s friend and “on the side of angels”, would never knowingly release a highly edited tape trying to show black people in a bad light and it was all fun and games, that whole painting her and the NAACP as racists thing, until it turned out it was dead motherfucking wrong and then it kinda seemed like it was probably a bad idea. So, whoopsie, my bad, racewar mulligan.
Secondly, Jonah wants you to know that the real villain in this piece is Spencer Ackerman who is making people like Andrew Breitbart act like racists by accusing people of being a racist until they finally go, “Okay. Fine. You wanna see racist? I’ll show you racist. There. Satisfied?” and then they burst into tears and go see Oprah for forgiveness because Oprah is like the black Pope and she can do that.
Lastly (before assigning additional blame on the White House because they suck) Jonah continues by cautioning against adopting the tactics of your enemies and writes:
Embracing the tactics you condemn in others requires, at minimum, that you stop condemning it in others. It also has the potential to sell your soul on layaway.
I don’t know what that means. Is “sell your soul on layaway” supposed to be the new “I can get it for your wholesale”? I don’t know.
I guess it is supposed to make Jonah sound all spiritual and shit which means that he has been redeemed for his comments about Katrina victims going Mad Max/Waterworld mau-mau tribal at the Superdome. Comments, I might add, which were not racist and only served to illustrate Jonah Goldberg’s great love of cinema. And tragedy befalling others.
He’s kind of schadenfreudey that way…

Jonah, son of Lucianne would certainly know all about selling souls on layaway. His mom invented the concept.
You don’t sell something on layaway. You buy it. The “on” connotes a plan, like Death on the Installment Plan. The seller provides the plan. The purchaser buys the thing “on the plan.”
Yes, I’m impugning Goldberg’s intelligence. It’s an unpopular position but one I feel I must take.
Gahd, teh stupid in this one is strong! Why do we continue to entertain this brain-dead idiot? Please, please, PLEASE, let’s stop treating these people as though their opinions matter. They. Do. Not. Not that that has ever stopped the Spawn of Lucianne from polluting the airwaves with his demonstrations of ignorance. I am just sick and tired of this nonsense; once again, the Emperor is naked!
Walks on the side of angels? I mean, really? I don’t care if you share the exact same political bent as Breitbart the Besotted, but christ, the man is a miserable drunken prick of a person. Even as dim a bulb as Jonah should be able to see this. Then again, maybe he curbed his criticism in fear of the mighty twitter sword of Breity, like his submissive servant Allah the Chastened.
“Embracing the tactics you condemn in others requires, at minimum, that you stop condemning it in others.”
or do it the Republican way — hope that no one else important remembers you previously condemning it
Off topic, but Susan has documented the ultimate McArdle flipout.
Doughy Diaperload’s Dunce-cap, head-poppin’, cotton-pickin’ Faves…
In Rules of Engagement, Samuel L. Jackson shot a POW in the head to get another man to talk.
I would remind you that extremism in the defense of
libertydouche-bags is no vice! …“a little bit of smacky-face.” … “you do what you have to do,”My guess is that when presented in cinematic form, even larger numbers of people recognize that sometimes good people must do bad things.
Boo-hoo-hoo. Waaaaammmbuuulaaaannnncccce!
Hey, we haven’t had a blogging ethics panel in a while; might be time for one. Maybe the corner boys and the rest of pajama media’s finest can sit around and discuss at length what was worser: a) that Breitbart was so lazy and transparent in pulling this one off that they didn’t get nearly the same bang for their buck as with Acorn, or b) that Vilsack (D-Clueless) still got played like a fretless bass and fell for it hook, line and sinker, thus proving their fundamental claim that the administration sucks.
Soooo. Jonah and the whackaloons at NRO are running away from this one as fast as they can since it appears to have blown up right in Breitbart’s fat, ugly face, though he is in no way responsible for posting a highly edited and unsourced video which cast a dedicated civil servant, who just happens to accidentally be black and which had no bearing whatsoever in his decision to post it, in and unfavorable light. Jonah, I am sure, is intimately familiar with “selling your soul on layaway”, since his was sold that way at birth.
That is FANTASTIC!
Oh dear, could it be that the marriage is going south already? Or is she pissed about Bristol and Levi getting their own reality show before they’re even married.
I can see it now: “At Home With the Intullekshuals.”
sell your soul on layaway
Don’tcha know he’s had this little nugget squirreled away for juuuuuust the right time.
Except — Isn’t layaway for, ehm, the buyers. Or sompun?
I believe Charles Manson asked for a racewar mulligan when he realized he was wrong about the meaning of The White Album.
Any lawyers out there? Can Shirley Sherrod take Breitbart to the cleaners? Wouldn’t that be the best way to take this asshole down and give a warning to all the other Breitbarts that they post this garbage at their peril? I want this creep living on the streets and eating in Salvation Army halls. And that would be too good for him.
I’d rather see him in prison where he might find out his true value. Which is probably 6, maybe 7 cigarettes at first, and going down quickly after the first week.
Gosh, Meggs is dumb and unpleasant to boot. Rose Douthat yet to weigh in on the Sherrod contretemps?
Someone asked Glenn Greenwald about that. He said a lawsuit was possible, though probably would be difficult to win. He then went on to say it would be worth it* anyway, if for no other reason than to learn the identity of Rage-Face’s “source”, who allegedly provided the already edited tape.
*”Worth it” for a healthier media environment, presumably. How Ms. Sherrod would feel about it might be another matter. However, early indications are that she’s a fighter, and if enough of us ponied up for a legal fund, could be game on.
Thanks. I should have run to Glennzilla from the get-go. At any rate, even if she were to lose a lawsuit, it would make Breitbart and his fellow travellers’ lives hell for a while, and it would cost him lots and lots of money. I would gladly contribute to a legal fund for Ms. Sherrod.
Sorta off topic but I watched Breitbart exactly once when he was on MSNBC. That man is crazy. I’m talking clinical. I literally sat and watched him with my mouth open.
If ever there was a pro bono case, this is it. Taking out Breitbart and shining a light on the dark corners of the media? Made in heaven! And as long as some other network was being skewered that day, the MSM would eat it up.
I generally think Andrew is on the side of the angels
The kind of angels which delight in getting people fired with lies.
I think “on layaway” is supposed to mean not all at once but bit by bit. Wouldn’t be surprised to be wrong tho, considering Pants’ writing is so convoluted, but I’m pretty sure it’s a stupid analogy whatever it means.
And as long as some other network was being skewered that day, the MSM would eat it up.
Uh, no. They would do what they have always done when a network is attacked from the left or, as in this case, by the truth: They’d circle the wagons in defense of Fox and DimBart.
Yeah, this is my concern too, with my level of concern dependent on whether media behavior would affect the actual judicial process. All the Big Media honchos just looove their anonymous sources – whether they really exist, or are petty/vindictive versions of Harvey the Rabbit – so they may well come to RageFace’s defense just to preserve their own pathetic/sleazy SOPs.
And if there is concern that such a case winds up in the court of a ham (like Judge Ito of OJ Simpson fame was), are there approaches than can be taken in advance to account for that scenario? IANAL, but could a complaint be “custom crafted” in sufficiently narrow fashion to cull RageFace from the herd, so to speak? It would still need to have sufficient oomph to lead to revelation of the “anonymous source”, but without leaving the defendant the ability to scream Journalist’s Privilege, can’t reveal my source(s)!! Also, if it could be fashioned so the sleazy big media playas don’t feel threatened, they may make sport of the whole thing, rather than rushing to defend this a**hole.
Did I say IANAL? Just checking, in case it wasn’t self-evident.
Lawyers? Maybe. I think a better result could be found if some people like Michael Moore and Spike Lee could finance/produce/offer assistance to a group of young black journalists/cinematographers in the making of a mock-u-mentary about Breitbart. The irony of employing his tactics is so delicious I can almost taste it. “Don’t get mad, just get even.”
I think I’m remembering now that the rules for criminal cases – like the one the aforementioned Judge Ito presided over – are more stringent than those for civil cases. In fact, I think the next of kin of OJ’s murdered wife won a big civil judgment. So maybe my worries aren’t justified, though I still think the media will be very nervous about the prospect of the anonymous source being revealed (if there actually is one).
I’d love to see Sherrod sue Bretibart for libel and defamation of character. Clean him out. Take his underperforming asset, “Big Government” website, too. What a hoot that would be if Shirley took editorial control and made it into a progressive news outlet.
Sell your soul on layaway.
Lucienne taught him that.
Most of the TV commentary I’ve seen before today doesn’t even mention Breitbart but then I don’t watch Fox. The trad media don’t seem to want to talk about him.
As for anonymity of sources, I saw Dan Schorr defend Judith Miller when she was in jail. Lost a lot of respect for him there.
“…because Oprah is like the black Pope and she can do that.”
Please pass me a cigarette because that was faaaabuloooouuuuus…
