As Spencer notes, there is not too much surprising here:
Now, obviously, it’s not news that the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligences has ties to the Afghan Taliban, the Haqqani network and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar’s Hezb-e-Islami. That’s something that pretty much every observer of the Afghanistan war and the Pakistani intelligence apparatus has known for the better part of a decade.
But as the early-viewing New York Times reports, WikiLeaks presents a new depth of detail about how the U.S. military has seen, for six years, the depths of ISI facilitation of the Afghan insurgency. For instance: a three-star Pakistani general active during the 80s-era U.S.-Pakistani-Saudi sponsorship of the anti-Soviet insurgency, Hamid Gul, allegedly met with insurgent leaders in South Waziristan in January 2009 to plot vengeance for the drone-inflicted death of an al-Qaeda operative. (Gul called it “absolute nonsense” to the Times reporters.)
I’m old enough to remember a time when Russia’s ill-fated invasion, six year occupation and long slow retreat from Afghanistan was considered to be a contributing factor to the eventual dissolution of Soviet Union. “Russia’s Vietnam” it was called, I believe. I’m not sure why , having had our own Vietnam (it was in all of the papers) we thought we could do a better job.
Personally I’m waiting on an internal document dump from a Halliburton/KBR or Blackwater/Xe wherein we find that they have been slipping the insurgents a little cash and some weaponry just to grease the wheels of the profiteering gravy train. It’ll probably be listed as a “marketing expenses” like giving out those little sample packs of cigarettes.
It’s hard to believe that sometimes I think I’m not cynical enough.

You’re not the only one. They’re certainly giving them money (and maybe other stuff) to let supply convoys through.
Slip Sarah some cash and she will tweet sooner.
What’s that old saying? “Never believe anything until it has been officially denied.”
I also remember the Soviet invasion/occupation, and its deletrious effect of the continuation of that wonderful experiment called the Soviet Union. Indirectly, ol’ RonnieRaygunz did help kill the Commies with the assistance provided to the mujahideen. Too bad it’s biting our ass now, and if unchecked, will work out just about as well for us as it did the Soviets. We can only hope it would work outike it did for the British, they just lost a whole lot of troops. The Soviets lost the whole empire (shaky as it was). Can’t change the past, but the present sure can change the future. I got into a political discussion with some right wing religious guys over 4th of July weekend. It didn’t get ugly or uncivil, but the statement that we needed to be in Afghanistan was met with my response of “until your son or nephew or brother comes home in a box, then tell me what was gained, how much safer are you then”.
My Lai was institutionalized: a feature, no bug.
OBL called the failure of the Russian occupation AND the dissolution of the USSR.
Has said the same thing about the US invasion and occupation and also about the unity of the US.
His record and his timing have been impeccable, particularly compared to Spengler or Orwell.
PS CYL, Starz n’ Barz! Buh bye, Texass! Say goodbye to US federal revenue sharing, Colonial Alaska!
I’m so old I can remember how Rambo, learning the lessons of Vietnam, joined up with the mujahideen to free Afghanistan from the foreigners.
On this, I’m with Ms. Tomlin. It is hard to keep up.
My Sarah submission (oh, that makes the little soldier get a little pudgy!):

Feds Probe Blackwater Weapons Smuggling
Associated Press | September 22, 2007
WASHINGTON – Federal prosecutors are investigating whether employees of the private security firm Blackwater USA illegally smuggled into Iraq weapons that may have been sold on the black market and ended up in the hands of a U.S.-designated terrorist organization, officials said Friday.

I’m not sure why , having had our own Vietnam (it was in all of the papers) we thought we could do a better job.
A large portion of the American defense and intelligence establishment, along with some in the State Department, and the whole rightwing foreign affairs apparatus has been itching for a do over on Vietnam since 1975.
Alas, the pre-amble: “Federal prosecutors are investigating” doesn’t offer much faith that they’ll want to or be allowed to find anything — the federal government doesn’t seem real keen on the kind of investigation that might depict itself or its near, dear and well-healed BFFs in a poor light.
As for the sheer “well, duh!” factor of the whole wikileaks/pentagon papers dump bringing back memories of a certain Asian land war that America lost, it’s quite striking to realize that it was less than a year ago that Sir Change-a-Lot had the temerity to request another gazillion dollars for his other pet war, while insisting that “Afghanistan is not Vietnam“.
And yet, in spite of all the pathetic and lame attempts at pushback on today’s delicious wikileaks stunt, it’s just painfully clear that Afghanistan *is* in fact turning into his Vietnam. And if wasn’t for the fact that we’re all paying dearly for it, while American servicemen and women are dying daily to perpetuate his folly, it’d be fair to say Obama deserves every ounce of trouble his little war will bring him in the weeks ahead.
Pakistan has been running the Afghan wars since we started funding the Pakistani ISI during the Soviet’s turn in the ringer, and now those ISI fundy Islamists are even higher in the Pakistani miltary that they were 25 years ago, but of course everyone here knows that.
Pakistan is your basic libertarian paradise in that the wealthy/producers pay nearly zero taxes and the poor pays plenty, and our buddies the Saudi’s have been funding fundy Wahabist schools in Pakistan for years since the Pakistani libertarian paradise can’t be bothered to educate anyone not from the wealthy classes. Now I see the proper metaphor, Somalia with nukes!
One of the minor details in this story was that they still have some of the Stingers. And likely brought down at least one helicopter with them. More blowback.
Sheer poetry. Although not gibberish-y enough.

This looks like a Mark Twain ‘history doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme’ war, even though our betters sold it as free verse.
The war is just one head of the WOT Hydra .
Roll over Ike.
T-Bpgg,
Your constant Anti-American posts snarkily compare our help to the Afghan people as an occupation that is a failing, bumbling attempt to nation build.
Keep up the good work.
