Based upon photographic evidence, Satchmo, it seems, was never surprised or curious. No tilt.
Saints don’t tilt.
It’s so nice to see Beckham again and that shot is hilarious. Becks looks like SuperNanny and Fenway looks like he’s given up on the lesson.
Fenway is very fashion modelesque in that middle shot and Wembley manages to look dismissive and critical (and smart, sitting in front of all those books. We know he’s read every one).
OT – I see from the bookcase in the background that you and the Mrs. have a number of books that I also have.
When I visit someone I like to look to see what books they have. With e readers there will be a lot of people giving up their physical books. It’s weird but I wouldn’t want to give mine up – I get some kind of comfort from seeing them on the bookshelves every day.
I dunno how much independent motor control bassets have over their forehead muscles, but if you could train Wembley to archly raise one eyebrow (with spot) while retaining that quizzical expression, the lad would have a great future in show biz.
I’ve developed an addiction — now Thursday, mine too, is complete. So nice to see Fenway as a little pup, his head yet too heavy for his young neck to prompt that tilt (but is he wanting to tilt?). You note the surprise and curiosity of the tilt, the ever fascinating tilt. I also see invitation. (Or maybe invitation is an element of surprise?) Seeking and welcoming at the same time. Do we tilt our heads as we ponder tilting dogs’ heads?
Oh, and I also wanted to say, one of the wonderful things about dogs is that they don’t read books, have no idea who the president is, and have never heard of Megan Mc or that cheerleader lady.
Full on truth here. Just coming here to look at basset hounds is a welcome relief from the horseshit we progressives have to put up with on a daily basis.
I enlargened the Wembley pic to its largest, and must, must exclaim: “Divine Ears of Extensive Velvet, I Bow to Thee! Both of Thee!” Really, they are miraculous.
My sis and I are pug servants, and pugs are well-known champs of the head tilt. There’s a hilarious portrait photo of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor with their pugs, who are tilting their heads almost as much as that cartoon dog at gt3t11′s link.
As far as we can tell, it’s a gesture of What? As in, What is your intention, dear hoomin who does not speak Dog all that well? What do you want me to do? What’s next on the agenda? since our Albert does it in response to our speaking to him. He sometimes does a proto-head tilt when he’s listening to distant sounds outdoors. He’s effectively blind at present (hope to get it at least partially corrected in future), but my recollection is that he did this same slight listening tilt outside before he lost his sight, too.
Aaah, now my Thursday is complete.
What s/he said. Aaaaah.
(I know, it’s giving up, but my brain has been on s-l-o-w all day, for some reason.)
No fair throwing all the puppies at us at once!

Fenway is the ultimate Basset in these pics. No fair again.
The boys are beautiful.

Maybe I’m anthropomorphisizing, but I always feel like Fenway is rolling his eyes at you the minute your back is turned.
is it me or does Wembly’s expression looks like “NOT pooping at 3 a.m. ??? what is this concept of which you speak … “
Aw, Beckham was such a cutie pie. I still miss him.
Thanks for the gaggle of puppies, TBogg. A much-needed balm for the soul.
What did you do to make the boys look quizzical? High-pitched squeal, perhaps? And they are beautiful as always.
Actually they’re wondering “Why is this guy always taking pictures of us?”
There’s fabulous head-tilt action in this cartoonist’s analysis of her dog: http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/07/dog.html
She later posted photos of her dog, which looks exactly like the drawings. She herself may look different from her drawings.
I see Fenway, I think Catherine Deneuve

99% of the time the question is: “Are you gonna feed/ scratch me? When are you gonna start?”
thanks, gt3t11, for a great link. (My dog is incredibly smart. But I do have an autistic cat.)
Oh.My.Gawd. I’m wiping the tears from my face after reading that story about that poor “retarded” dog who wants so, so badly to be a good dog.
Unlike the subjects of our regular Thursday night confab here. What hilarious drawings.
Also. In the first picture, was Fenway ever that small and poogy? And what a handsome Beckham–miss him.

TBogg, a well-earned thank you.
Wembley wonders where are his spectacles.
Wembley is perfecting his basset “Churchill” expression of haughty disdain for us mere humans.

Glad to see some stuff out of the archive. Don’t be holdin’ out on us now.
Oh, and left Beckham’s pic up on my work computer. Seeing him was a very pleasant way to start the day.
