TBogg, I almost always get a laugh when I come to your place, but I wish you’d waited a few hours before making a link between Palin and the shooter.

If this is correct and that’s actually the shooter’s YouTube account, then it’s obvious that he would have shot whoever his congressperson was, even if Ms. Giffords had been defeated last year. The guy’s a complete nutcase.

Regardless of his motives or mental state, the increasingly violent rhetoric of the right, especially in Arizona, undoubtedly played a role in enabling and inspiring this act. They still have blood on their hands for creating an environment where this is a possibly justifiable act.

The guilty (at least in conscience) flee when no man pursueth: Sarah’s scrubbed that off her site, and the guy behind this has scrubbed it from his website.

Why not shoot somebody at the time, or right after the election??

That was a reference to the right-wing anti-Obama movement that overturned the Democrat ­majority in Congress in November, but failed to unseat Mrs Giffords. ­

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head outside a grocery store in Tucson while holding a public event, Arizona Public Media reported Saturday.

The 40-year-old Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a “Congress on Your Corner” event at a Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

At least nine other people, including members of her staff, were hurt. Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson. Her condition was not immediately known.

Giffords was talking to a couple when the suspect ran up firing indiscriminately and then ran off, Michaels said.

It is absolutely, absolutely unacceptable to shoot “indiscriminately”.

Target only politicians and their staff, and leave regular citizens alone.

The Fort Hood shootings are what I thought of right away this morning. And back then, despite the shooter’s islamic name, we held back on jumping to assumptions; and when it came out that he had jihadist interests, we insisted that people didn’t paint all U.S. muslims with the same brush. And Hassan was far less cuckoo than Loughner.

Scott Roeder, on the other hand, had deep ties and a long history with Operation Rescue and so forth. I think that many other people should be convicted for Dr. Tiller’s death alongside Roeder.

His rantings on Youtube, MySpace, and Facebook are straight out of Beck, the libertarians, and the black helicopter crowd. He apparently also listed the AZ Tea Party as one of his groups. It is not so much a question of politicizing this incident as recognizing the impact of the violent, eliminationist rhetoric coming from the right. It is also clear that at least in some quarters this is the desired (or at least unregretted)outcome of that rhetoric. The point of such public rhetoric is to inspire some delusional fool to do what the speaker is afraid to do, but still desires.

The Left is not a supposedly responsible person who ran for Vice President of the United States and has a worshipful following. She KNOWS she can influence people with a tweet, for God’s sake. Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik says that law enforcement has a reason to believe another person is involved in the shootings of Judge John Roll, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and others today.

“We’re not convinced that he acted alone,” he said at a news conference at Westward Look resort.

He confirmed that there were 19 people injured and that six people are dead.

He also refused to identify any suspects, although the name of shooter Jared Lee Loughner has been widely reported.

He said that two “brave individuals” tackled the shooter, and that Roll was in the wrong place at the wrong time, as he’d simply shown up to say hello to his friend Giffords.

Update: He said a semi-automatic weapon was used and that all 19 victims were shot.

He also angrily denounced the vitriolic political climate of today—especially in Arizona.

“We have become the Mecca for prejudice and bigotry,” he said.

It isn’t a hit list. It’s suggestions on who should be primaried (back in 2008)—and as a blue dog, Giffords was one of them. The teabaggers themselves just put out a similar one on senate Republicans running in 2012 (one of their targets was that wild eyed Rino liberal, Orrin Hatch!).

There were no crosshairs, reloads, watering of liberty trees with blood, second amendment remedies, target practice fundraisers, etc. Just Markos pointing out that he didn’t like Gabby’s voting record. Which is fine—and how politics works.

Many (most) of Palin’s followers are hate-filled ignoramuses. Racists and bigots who spew and respond to blatantly violent rhetoric. Putting gunsights on a political map, identifying specific politicians to aim at, telling your followers to “lock and reload” is irresponsible. That’s just common sense.

Because the Tea Party people are violent, the phrase can reasonably be interpreted to mean that. The words themselves – without that context – can’t be claimed to be an incitement to violence.

A Democrat could say “We’ve diagnosed the problem … Let us describe the solution” and you’d never interpret that to mean violence.

I transcribed that wrong. Should have been ‘prescribe’, not ‘describe’. I’ll just agree to differ with you, Lesley. They’re going to ‘prescribe’ a solution, not going to tell you how to elect someone who more closely agrees with your point of view. And as someone who has had some personal contact with schizophrenic individuals … I have to say it’s wrong to say they are incapable of thought. Thank you outrageoftheday, for posting this. Too often people use the words “lunatic” and “nutjobs” and forget that there are real diseases out there that play with a person’s brain and leads them to obsessive and paranoid thinking that is DESTRUCTIVE to themselves and everyone around them. I’m sure many people in the political arena think paranoid schizophrenics are few and faw between, but actually the number is pretty high (visit a psych ward, they’re full of them). And granted all it takes is ONE person to hurt hundreds. Politicians need to keep this is mind, if it’s real to a normal person than it is concrete for a schizophrenic, and when they feel endangered and are given the means to protect whatever they treasure, there is NOTHING in their minds that will stop them.

All of these newscasters should be aware of this. They need to do their research on mental illness, and consider the factors when they make their programs, write their books, and draw out their speeches based on WHO is listening in their audience. If they love this country, which is undoubtedly made of PEOPLE (not districts, not money, not Wall street, not competition), then they would do us all a favor and take this into consideration

It may not have escaped his notice that Congresswoman Giffords was just sworn in for her third term, and that Tucson was just ordered by the state of Arizona — in accordance with the law that Giffords was vilified for opposing — to suspend its high school Latino studies program.

Palin referred to her map in NOVEMBER, after the election. She reminded everyone that the marks were “Bullseyes” and said that 18 of the 20 incumbents targeted were defeated.

Giffords was one of the two targeted in Palin’s gun sights who were not defeated, and here she is, shot in the head a mere week after being sworn in for her third term. So, a far more recent reminder than last March, and the image is STILL on her Facebook page, though her people are not claiming that the symbols are “surveyor’s marks.”

And this isn’t hate speech?
