I thought I would combine Thursday Night Basset blogging with the obligatory Fenway update mainly because there is little to say about Fenway other than he is doing very well, and you would be hard-pressed to believe that he was as sick as he was a week ago. Other than looking thinner than usual, he’s back to eating normally, going for walks, and, unfortunately trying to hump Wembley when he feels ‘frisky’. This will stop after he gets ‘tutored’ sometime in mid July.
Here he is looking through the window this morning at Brady the Cairn terrier who lives across the alley .
As for Wembley, he’s been packing on the pounds lately and we’ve been calling him Wem-Belly as a homage to Isabelle “Isa-Belly” Hodes on Weeds.
Beef-cake.

What’s that spiny thing behind Wembley? Has the tutoring already taken place?
Sorry, my St. Bernard is about four years old and he was “fixed” about three and a half years ago and he still humps the female Chow.
One of the all-time great punchlines from one of the all-time great comics, “The Far Side”. Right up there with the “cat fud” one.
Tutoring will not cure the humping. It’s a dominance thing. My two dogs were both neutered at early ages. Wally humps Trey when he (Wally) thinks Trey is getting too much attention or just when Wally wants to show the new kid Who’s The Boss.
Great news. My Thursday is now officially better.
PS: That Fenway is one handsome dude.
Cosmo-Senator Scott Brown couldn’t hold a candle to Fenway.
Glad to know Wembley’s on the mend. No more close calls like that, okay?
So glad Fenway’s doing well. Tutoring will be okay. Wembley’s going to rule the roost someday, I just know it.
Oh by the way apparently Tim Pawlenty got all “Oh yeah?” finally on Twitter:
Memo to Tim: I realize that your advisers were telling you “You’ve got to hit back, for God’s sake!” but when the reaction you’re hoping that a statement will elicit is “Oh, burn!”, you shouldn’t require people reading it to do math. No, not even a tiny bit of math. Just breaks up the punchiness, you know?
Not that there was any connection to Beauzeaux’s comment here about somewhat comical displays of dominance and humping, just, you know, came to mind for some reason.
Has Fenway always looked so meditative, or was it his illness that made him realize how precious life is? [silly me, he's just pondering how to get at Brady...]
All the previous comments about tutoring not curing humping are correct. Spaying/tutoring doesn’t change kittehs’ behavior either… I’ve got the perfect pair — the tutored male who spends every waking moment (there are about 36 of them in any given day) trying to sniff the butt of the little girl kitteh who was spayed about 6 months ago. She, of course, takes GREAT offense at this, while she’s waving her butt in the air…
Great joy here in Savannah at Fenway’s improvement. Watch Wembley, though. He may decide he loves all those extra meals more than he loves Fenway… Don’t let them out on balconies together.
So so glad to hear Fenway’s doing so well. Maggie & Molokai are planning to bottle and sell their drool to all the local vets. Mom’s been telling them the mean Republicans are trying to take away her Medicare, so they want to help out.
Chiming in on the humping thing, because that’s where the fun is…despite being fixed, Maggie the dachshund will occasionally hump her brother, Ernie the emo dachshund.
Much like Snowbilly Sarah humps Todd, I imagine.
I was jonesing for an update, and really looking forward to TNBB. Great to see Fenway sooooo adorably pensive, and getting healthy again. I do believe he’s gonna have a St. Satchmo face when he’s an elderly fellow.
And Wembley hasn’t lost that I-can’t-believe-this-nonsense glower he had as a pup. Though I think the glower might be a wee bit of an optical illusion, helped along by the brown spot “eyebrows.”
Wonderful boys!
Wem-belly. Behold. Jabba the Hound.
Good one.
I am glad that Fenway is on the mend, and that Wembley has a full belly.
Maybe you can get two tutors for the price of one and get Wembley ‘educated’ at the same time. Then take both boys out for ice cream. They’ll never know the difference.
Glad to hear the Fenster’s back and very very glad it was diagnosed right away.
Glad to hear that Fenway is okay thanks to Tboggocare.
Ahhh, good news. And lovely dog portraits, as usual.
Fenway looks even handsomer. Wem-belly…well, all that uneaten food was just going to waste, what did you want him to do, dad?
I predict that in ten to fifteen years, “tutoring” will have replaced “neutering” as the actual word for the procedure in question.
Thanks again for the lovely photos of our beloved, though never-met-in-person, dogs, and the laughs provided by the host and the funniest commenters on the toobz.
As usual tejanarusa can do the heavy lifting and make the excellent, intelligent, well thought, concise comments and I can say second(but never ditto)
I do want to add that perhaps Tbogg can let us all know which style and size of neuticles that Fenway will be fitted for because…inquiring minds want to know. Myself particularly because we have a new dog and he is much less a he than he was and our last “tutored” dog spent 15 years being called a she regardless of having a huge wangly thing.
Consulting with Arthur about this tutoring thing – which in his case was taken care of before he left teh ‘Home’ – his belief is that simply a gentleman does not impose himself on anyone. And he’s very glad that his ded pidgeon puree was enjoyed by the Boyz.
So glad to hear that Fenway is improving. Great pics–they are a handsome pair.
Exactly – Wembley the Hutt. That’s one of the growningest hounds I’ve ever seen. The scary part is he still hasn’t caught up to his paws…
Tom, next time he’s posed like that put some Star Wars actions figures around. Epic tableau possibilities.
Glad to hear Fenway’s on the mend. That boy needs to mind his extracurricular eating choices.
The Humping Will Not Stop.
Molly Loves the humping, and will try it on anyone who plays with her, even if they weigh twice what she does:

Our Dozer the bulldog is a bit too mellow to care much about dominance, but if he runs into a strong, unfamiliar smell that piques his interest (oddest one yet was a new potted plant) he will stick out his tongue an inch or so and wave it up and down while gently thrusting his hips with his eyes half closed in bliss, probably not unlike how John Ziegler used to get when he thought of the Snowbilly Princess.
Hey! Maybe someone could give Ziegler a potted plant. Maybe, just maybe, he could learn to love again.
My first thought also, too.

That Wembley, he’s a porn star who’s entering his late-Ron Jeremy stage.
Look at that re-cooperatin’ fellow! Look at his luxuriant little bro! Excellent pics, TDogg, as they always are. Re the tutoring effects – I think animals are as variable in their sexy-levels as people. Our 4-footeds are all snipped, and Albert the pug and Count Danilo the Burmese tom exude manliness in a fundamental way. I’m sure Albert would hump things if he felt there was any dog-dominance at issue, and Dan’s baritone demands that he be permitted to go outdoors and kick butt can be heard two floors away. I’m scared to think what it would be like around here if they were entire!
Why, thank you for that totally undeserved compliment…your comment’s pretty funny, too. The competition here is tough, so I often just go for playing it straight.
I must say, on revisiting today, I notice Fenway’s ears seem downright small, in relation to his head, compared to Wembley’s. Does that mean Wembley is still growing into his?
Great pictures, as always. Glad Fenway is doing better.
That is actually somewhat of an optical illusion. Wembley’s ears are only slightly bigger than Fenway’s but his head is WAYYYYYYY smaller. When we brought Fenway home he always looked like he should have toppled over forward because his head was so big, and while the proportions are better now, he still has a really big head for a basset. Wembley on the other hand, has a very small head, jabba-sized body, massive dinosaur feet and ears on the larger-than-average-for-a-basset size. And yes, Wembley is still growing into all his parts!
Arthur and I remain fascinated by the size of Wembley’s footz. Also – the ear issue. Arthur doesn’t really believe in ears that size.
Fenway has a sparkle in his eyes and I’m so glad to see this update. He looks lovely.
Wembley looks like he’s ready to settle down with a book, a pipe and a snifter of brandy.
Fenway is just looking great…
water flotation belts
Wow, a spam message with an actual relevant comment, and not the usual “Your blog’s great, come check this out” thing. Is the software just getting smarter or are the spammers using real people now?
And yes, Fenway is looking quite well, and I’m happy to see it. Give both boys a skritch from me.
Whew, it was spam…I looked for bassett-ear-shaped float devices, but couldn’t find any, and wondered, but that kinda stuff is so rare at fdl, it was hard to believe.
SO glad Fenway is feeling better. He’s looking good as is Wembley. But, what happened to puppeh Wembley? He’s HUGE!
