Someday, long after most of us are dead and gone and then reincarnated and then dead again and then maybe reincarnated once more, someone is going to have to explain to future generations why there was such a battle to treat everyone as equals and bestow upon them freedoms that are rightly theirs, and more importantly, why it took so long.
And it will have to be explained that some people sought out the opinions of bigots and homophobes and lunatics, a fringe religious cult and an ancient men’s club devoted to velvet robes and pedophilia and gave them a voice in the matter when instead they should have been sent from the room and not been allowed back in until they had put to rest their own demons.
Democracy is kind of stupid that way.
Anyway, well played New York.

Chris Lee said he would like to retroactively blame this for the collapse of his marriage.
Amen. Nothing could be more detrimental to my happy marriage than letting k.d. lang marry the woman she loves. Really, now, WTF?
YEA!!!!!!!!
It is just amazing how many gays in the closet there are, pretending they are homophobic.
As to the cult of the velvet robes, how could you join and pledge to not partake of female sex as a male if you did not have significant sexual issues?
I remember when the priest in our very small parish asked me in the confessional when I was about 13, if I might consider joining the priesthood. We both knew it was in response to the fact I was not going to share my sexual exploits with him, what a joke.
Some would not like kd lang’s performance of the Canuck hymn. Their enjoyment hampered, blinded, by a prejudice of what she is while she is so nakedly showing them, at that very second, exactly who she is.
I liked it quite a bit. Thanks, tbogg.
Great news, and what a wonderful performance of “Hallelujah.” I confess I’ve got a little — not sick — blasé about that song lately, having loved it since 1984 when I bought Various Positions as an import. But this may be the best version yet. And of course extremely appropriate — though kd herself has been able to marry in Canada for some years now.
This literally doubles the number of Americans able to marry the responsible and consenting adults of their choice.
And the antis are gnashing their teeth.
Makes me proud to be a citizen of the People’s Republic of New York, regardless of whether corn is really a vegetable or grain.
And it’s why I’m so reluctant to move back to Pennsyltucky, “home” of Santorum (all kinds).
Wait. I was told that when this happened it would destroy my marriage. I’m not prepared for that, yet.
Don’t those people know how much junk someone can accumulate living 32 years in the same house? Who’s going to help pack up the dishes for our big split? I demand that all gay people come to my house and help me with this.
And shouldn’t the government send us some kind of official notice when it’s time for us to move out? I don’t think this was very well organized. I’m confused.
Wow. That song sends chills down my spine and brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.
That’s a lovely version of a great song. My favorite version is the John Cale arrangement (which Rufus Wainwright used, though I prefer Cale’s slightly rougher voice).
I thought it was weird when k.d. ran down into the audience to headbutt Lenny, though…
NOt only is this, of course, long overdue—but Adnrew Cuomo now has a major piece of legislation under his belt just 6 months into his term. 2016′s a long way, but someone’s looking that much more presidential to me.
I live in a state whose former governor made it publicly, explicitly clear he would sign a marriage equalilty bill and the leg just couldn’t get up enough votes for it. My own senator, Democrat and current senate president, abstained from voting, shit coward that he is. Better that he not risk offending anyone and hurt his chances to advance his own business. This is the guy who’s been tipped for governor some day. If it happens, it’ll be a seamless transition from Christie.
Thanks for the kd early in the morning. What a lovely way to start the day.
Some people aren’t EVER going to give up their hating.
And here’s a specific instance of why this is so.
First, the comment about “reincarnation” is not part of their vocabulary.
Second, do you honestly believe in 3 more generations. With climate change, 3 generations is a stretch. The population left will hardly be able to communicate. It will be so primitive that people could be lighting fires with 2 sticks, if they are the lucky ones to survive!
I kind of hope he runs next year, I am tired the red dog Obama, he hasn’t done enough, he is young and energetic, yet he does not like my indigenous rights, he wants to compromise my Medicare and thinks nothing of spending my SS.
Let’s draft Cuomo for President, if he won’t come freely.
Which part? Surely not the father, who’s relationship with his son doesn’t parallel my relationship with my daughter, but is in the same vane. If it is the politician, her future is in the hands of the father, or rather the fathers and mothers who have grown and learned that people are people and there is enough love to go around.
History will also record that as crowds danced in the street outside Stonewall, Barack Obama maintained his public opposition to same-sex marriage.
And unlike the president’s apologists, history will not grade him on a curve.
“Let’s draft Cuomo for President, if he won’t come freely.”
Hell, the Praetorian Guard did it to Claudius after the assassination of Caligula. They feared they’d be out of work.
Obama’s a bit too moderate for my tastes, as well—but Cuomo has no interest in running against him and weakening the field (I think Andy recognizes the whole “cut nose, spite face” thing, there). But he’s placed himself as the unquestionable Dem front runner in 2016.
Oh—bonus points! He just revitalized his state’s tourism industry, too. No residency requirement and high profile gay couples already planning weddings will bring new meaning to “I Love NY”.
I’m all for executing for treason to the establishment clause any politician who uses religion for or against legislation. That’s runs up against my free speech absolutism, however.
Here in buffalo we wonder if two guys getting hitched in Plattsburgh will affect our marriages.
As Wanda Sykes put it, if you don’t believe in same-sex marriage, don’t marry somebody of the same sex! The implication being that you shouldn’t stop someone who wants to marry a member of their own sex. The idea that this somehow threatens traditional marriages is absurd.
She doesn’t believe in that. To her “Love” is for “Christians” No others need apply.
That’s my line – If you don’t like gay marriage, fine. Don’t have one. Otherwise, STFU.
Same applies to abortion: Until men can get pregnant, they should make no decisions or laws regarding abortions.
