I’m back.
And none too soon, as it would appear that Rick Perry is about to go down in flames because he failed to focus-group possible names (“Rootin’ Tootin’ Shootin’land”, “Hold Mah Beer World”, or “Annie Get Yer Gun & HPV Shot Right’cher”) for his 3-Mexican daily-limit hunting camp. And by go down in flames I, of course, exclude the hard core Republican base who are muttering into there PBR’s that is totally not fair that black people can probably call their hunting camps “Niggerhead” and they can’t. Will this white man’s burden never ease up?
Meanwhile comedian and undercover DNC spokesperson Roseanne Barr said this about rich people:
“I first would allow the guilty bankers to pay, you know, the ability to pay back anything over $100 million [of] personal wealth because I believe in a maximum wage of $100 million. And if they are unable to live on that amount of that amount then they should, you know, go to the reeducation camps and if that doesn’t help, then being beheaded,” Barr said with a straight face.
Of course, all of the smarter people flapped their hands and, you know, squealed SOSHALISUM! and stuff, but Professor Althouse used this as an opportunity to give wing to her readers hopes and aspirations by posting a poll.
You probably won’t be surprised to learn that 43% of her readers won’t even try to make $100 million dollars if the dice are loaded in such a way that they can’t keep that $100,000,001st dollar.
I can only imagine how it must feel to get that kind of pressure off your back….

Welcome back. Your snark has been missed.
Other than that, I ve got nothing, except to say I love Barbara Ehrenreich. (Apostrophe not working for me. Is it me, or is it FYWP?)
I noticed that only 983 people responded to the poll, so that is probably all the people who make over $100,000,000.
Well, Professor Gallo is really getting down to the heart of the matter. Personally, I know that when I made my first $100 Million, I really went for broke making that $100,000,0001st dollar because I knew that it would not be taxed. Now that there is even a sniff of a chance that I will have to pay some kind of tax on my $100,000,001st dollar, it is time I closed up shop and went Galt.
Wait a minute…what’s that notice at the bottom of the screenshot? “Policode.com, Free Polls!?!?” Dear Lord, is our Ann engaging in an act of socialism?! Burn the heretic! Free polls is theft!
And who religiously respond to Ann Althouse polls, no less. I didn’t think they’d take the time to actually read what their handmaidens scrawl out.
People are going deeply into student loan debt, but her students at least can take comfort in the fact that they have gotten the benefit of this woman’s wisdom.
I’d work right up to the $100 million, and then, no more.
Hilarious. As if people “earn” $100 million for their productivity. If only Joseph Cassano, the guy at AIG Financial Products whose royal fucking up led to the rest of us having to bail out their bonuses, had stopped working once he reached $100 million (in cash, mind you) instead of the over $300 million he actually got.
By the way, “fucking up” is pretty much a job description on Wall St., which is why they need taxpayers to keep their yachts afloat and nostrils coked.
That actually IS quite surprising, because you know, you’d expect 100% of people who read and agree with a liar to be liars as well, rather than only 43% of them.
I thought those baggers were so much hating of teh taxes that they would be very careful to keep under the tax rate completely. What a wonderful world if we all just made less than 5k and paid no taxes but got all those government freebies!
Btw, I heard a woman being asked about Rick Perry and, for her, the man who cannot slash enough regulations and taxes and wants guns to be issued to every fetus so they can kill their own abortion doctors, this man is not conservative enough because he wants to edumicate illegal aliens. The mind boggled…until Dick and his daughter came out and said President Obama needs to apologize to the Bush administration because he used drones to kill an al-qider leader and smacked the mind right back into place.
Does this mean that 57% want more money even if it means being beheaded? I’m not going to read outhouse to find out.
You know, I saw that headline and my first thought was, “Fuck you, Dick, just die already.”
Yeah, I know…that makes me a very, very bad person.
Welcome back, Tbogg. Didja have fun? A full report please. With pix.
That’s such an awesome poll. It’s a bit like listening to a couple of 8-year-olds discussing what they’d do if they had super powers, except not nearly as endearing or intelligent.
Just as with the cops in NYC, who are busy protecting hedge fund managers by randomly macing people, you’ve gotta wonder: why does Professor Corkscrew and her minions spend so much time worrying about the prosperity of a class of people to which they will never, ever belong, and who probably guffaw heartily at the thought of anyone bothering to “stand up” for them?
The closest those poll-takers will come to $ 100M is on a Bureau fo Engraving tour. And, like most of us, just get to look at it. Hopefully, ‘Occupy Wall Street’ will get the long overdue Revolution. Hope and Change have to start with us- relying on any one politician has proven to be an excersize in futility.
‘American Spring’- pretty catchy headline, eh?
In fairness, most of Outhouse’s readers are lucky to make more than $100 a year in actual wages.
Frankly, if I ever made $100,000,000 in a year, I would retire then and there.
Those 57% only buy lottery tickets if the pay out is over $100 million.
You work until the freaking job you said you were going to do is done. End of story. If it takes you beyond $100,000,000, so be it. If you’re only working for the money, there’s space for you on the street at ground level.
Yeah, since when is money the ONLY motivation for doing something?
Oh. We’re talking Republicans.
Never mind.
Yeah, I wondered why those geniuses weren’t all making $100 million …
My late father (then a retired CPA) once showed me that since he continued to work as an arbiter in NYC while collected Social Security, his marginal tax rate (including decreased SS payment, US, NYS and NYC taxes) was over 91%, He continued to work, even though his income was nowhere near $100 million, or even $100,000, per year.
He did so because he valued his work, and it was of value to others. Those who cannot say that about their jobs (or coupon clipping) are of no use to society and should consider changing their jobs or (as Roseanne suggested) ending their useless lives.
When my brother-lin-law saw Versailles, he said, “Look at this place! No wonder they chopped their heads off!”
Two things:
1)Roseanne Barr is probably closer to 100-millionaire status than Ann Althouse is.
2)Nurses are chided when we mention adequate compensation for our labors. We’re supposed to derive satisfaction from our work. If we do not derive adequate satisfaction from our holy work, we are to understand that many folks are willing to work for much less than us. I submit that goes for our Galtian Overlords, too. Are we still calling them Galtian Overlords?
3) This should have been formatted succinctly. FYWP
$100 million isn’t enough? Who on this planet needs more than that to live on?
Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that I had that $100 million. Deducting taxes (again, assuming that I won’t cheat or take deductions I’m not legally able to), I’m probably down to around $70 million or so. Let’s say I want to take care of family debts, help some friends out, and give to the public schools and universities that gave me my education to the tune of $10 million. That leaves $60 million.
At a million a year, that’s $83,000 a month to spend on all living expenses, wants and needs. I’d probably die of old age before spending it all. And all of this also assumes that I don’t take the money I’m not using and dump it into a low-risk, interest-bearing account.
So yes, I do wonder why someone needs more than this.
At a million a year, that’s $83,000 a month to spend on all living expenses, wants and needs.
Yeah, but the mortgage payments on your $10-million home would be…oh, the mortgage interest deduction would be an astronomical break at tax time? Hmmm, that’s right…. let me re-calculate…. And of course, all those charitable donations you made….carry the 6…..
JMHO, of course, but no one – I don’t care how genius-intelligent or gifted or creative or mega-”hard working” or athletically amazing or inventive or you name it – ever under any circumstances works in such a fashion to “deserve” to make $100million/year, much less anything more than that.
Most people who make giant sucking salaries do so because they are CROOKS and/or are members of the old boys network. Our stupid populace prefers to view the super-wealthy as super deserving. In most cases, they’re just ripping someone off and/or they were born into wealth and have an easy time making more due to their connections (see: GW Bush).
Good for Roseanne (really) for pointing out the frickin obvious.
I’m certain the other 99.9 percent of Americans would LOVE to have the problems the top 0.1 have.
As Louis C.K. said: “Rich people have no idea what it’s like to be poor, but poor people know exactly what it’s like to be rich.”
@Spotts: It isn’t about how much one needs or even could possibly spend, the accrual of “wealth” represents a scorekeeping mechanism in an obscene game. That’s why job creation via investing isn’t part of the plan unless gain (more game points) is a guaranteed outcome. Even a non-maximum, i. e. taxed gain, is sub optimal. They want the game to promise that they’ll win.
At which point I remember the old saying:
He who dies with the most toys…still dies.
…she’s clearly missed a few poll options – a clear winner would be:
() slack off? what do you think I’m doing reading your blog?
I worked for a small construction company at the time of the financial crisis in 2008. The guy who owned it wasn’t super rich but was doing ok, but was just OBSESSED with “if I can’t make at least X amount over cost on everything, it’s not worth doing.” I pointed out to him that there was something to be said for just being able to keep the doors open in a downturn, something along the lines of “there’s some value in just being able to keep everyone working, as long as all the expenses are being covered. There’s less business out there and taking less profit is what you need to do to get it. The flip side is, when things turn around you’ll have a bigger customer base than you had going into it and lots more references, and you can make up whatver profit you had to forego to keep working when things were down.”
He was unable to see any value in that. I quit a couple of months later and by 6 months later, he was virtually out of business. He’s still hanging on by a thread – went from a company with something like 15 full-time employees to a company with 5 full-time employees, all of them now working for much lower wages, and a good bit of the time, just sitting around hoping for some work. Which means, he still ain’t making the profits he thought he had to make.
43% of her readers won’t even try to make $100 million dollars if the dice are loaded in such a way
In the same vein, I was going to let all the Victoria’s Secret lingerie models sleep with me tonight, but one of them might ask me to cut my toenails, so now I will refuse to take their calls.
While she’s about 35 years too late, it’s nice too see Roseanne Barr took that job speaking for the Khmer tourist bureau. I’ve heard it’s quite a lovely country, as long as you’re careful about the unexploded Nixon-era munitions, and, certainly, anyone who can’t be reeducated out of the notion that $100 million is enough can afford a holiday in Cambodia.
Next up, Annie Winebox polls her readership on what they’d cook Shakira as a post-coital breakfast, because that’s as likely to happen as any of them making a hundred mill.
Is rent on Shakira’s butt more than that?
“…Let’s say I want to take care of family debts, help some friends out, and give to the public schools and universities that gave me my education…” — Mwahahaha, you *so* fail as a Republican, and that’s why you can’t have nice things — or at least $100M tax free.
Giving back to friends and public institutions. Christ, what will those insane liberals think of next? Equal access to the law? A fair playing field? Puh-lease…
*heh* Miz Barr really is a Nut Farmer here in the heart of
KenyaHawai’i…! ;-)This hurts the GOP they can’t use Racist Code words like Newt’s Food Stamp President line if the heat is on Perry over race.
Reverse the question if the government taxed you more than it does billionaires as a percent of income why wouldn’t you slack off I have heard the phrase “your getting paid anyway when I’ve tried to work harder ” from my fellow workers before.
Kiss up to the boss let other workers do the work steal the credit steal their ideas heck if your the bosses friend you can steal him blind this attitude can be found in a small farm in Wisconsin Ann as well as the big banks.
Working hard does not pay anymore.
You’d think the Koch brothers would jump on the opportunity to cut back on a few crimes.
Ann lets suppose you loaned the banks and the rich who own the banks a ton of money and in return they were suppose to get you a job and help save your home as part of the deal we will call that part interest on the loan, but the banks didn’t live up to their deal now did they?
The banks and rich paid lobbyists acting in their interests to get politicians who they gave money too to sell us on this deal sure the banks kind of paid us back what they loaned but they now won’t lend to business to create jobs or save our homes.
Look Ann I just want whats coming to me you might want to be a victim but I’m not. I and most of the American people did not sign off loaning the banks money without the expectation of getting something in return.
The banks agents paid agents I might add the lobbyists and politicians made us promises.
Instead we got cuts in our SS and Medicare.
I wonder if Ann will keep singing the same tune if Wisconsin has more budget cuts? Wisconsin’s economy is not getting better and Gov Walker is tight with the Koch brothers who want to cut all public education funding.
You know I honestly do not know what I would do with that kind of money. For me it would be like Brewster’s Millions.
You should keep to keep all of your money after the first $100 million just for that tag!!! LOL
Ann should poll this question-
“Would you rather pay 50% taxes on $200,000 income or 20% taxes on $100,000?”
I’m betting most of her readers would choose the latter option.
Wise of you not to mention that Perry didn’t name the hunting camp, and in fact had the sign (on a boulder, i think) painted over and turned face down.
Very wise to avoid facts when disseminating disinformation…
I’ve never read your blog before and I never will again (which should make you happy) because — let’s face it — you have zero credibility.
Oh and I agree 100% with Roseanne Barr.
For a minute there I wondered why it went pitch black dark in here.
Power went out? A line down?
Then I realized, TBogg just shot out the lights.
Again.
Had to fire up the Coleman lantern.
*G*
Great read, thanks as always . . . how ’bout them Lions!!!!! LMBO!
Free the polls! N the Hungryians too!
The fact that it was not Perry that named it and that it had been painted over was in TBogg’s post. It was in his link, if you bothered to read.
BTW, said link implies the rock remains face up, though. Not face down. It says the name is still visible beneath the coat of white paint.
What was that comment about credibility?
All that said, however, why this is in any way is any sort of an issue is beyond me to figure out. If we’re going to start judging folks on what the name of every place they’ve visited in their past then we really might as well give up the pooch and admit this democracy thing don’t work.
Dude, moonshine n meth sell for better n that!!!!!
Yer killin me, show me a mil and I’m gone tropics with my honey 4 ever.
Sayyyy, do they play newgrass in the tropics????? Might have to rethink this, no WAY I’m gonna buy a uke no matter HOW popular they are these days . . .
Tropics ? Not me. Hot and humid and sticky and tropical systems of one kind or another and bugs the size of your hand.
Nahhh
Here’s a funny story I wrote on another site soon after Obama had been elected when those rich assholes were worried about his campaign promise to raise taxes on those making over $250,000.
http://forum.sportsmogul.com/showthread.php?193518-Higher-Tax-Rates-Got-Ya-Down&highlight=
I was, however, quite wrong in my prediction about the economy at the time though because I was still in the “Obama is gonna bring teh change” mindset when I wrote it.
Boy how I’ve gone from a huuuuuuuugggggeeee supporter to someone who firmly believes that the only real hope for progressives now is to see him LOSE his re-election bid.
But the story was funny. I guess. Had lots of positive feedback. It’s all about teh stoopid and their low taxes/no taxes mantra.
WTF???
Testing 1, 2, 3.
I just tried to post twice and both times it “didn’t take” or disappeared or something.
Oh well, here’s another try to share a short story I wrote on another site soon after Obama’s election regarding teh stoopid and their fetish over taxes.
http://forum.sportsmogul.com/showthread.php?193518-Higher-Tax-Rates-Got-Ya-Down&highlight=
LOL….
Out here in CA construction begin to tank in ’03 and went deep and hard in ’04 and ever since.
When a construction person says x % or loser, MY understanding is they LOSE money . . . and if they LOSE money, the help don’t get paid, the bills and materials don’t get paid for.
Your anecdote falls a bit short of the reality I experienced out here.
I spent 20 years in the food biz, I ran kitchens, I know costing and purchasing, and payroll, utilities, rent and more that goes into pricing a dish and hoping to sell enough of them to GENERATE a decent profit so as not to go under . . .
Do some folks and greedy rich bastards n bitches gouge and cheat and lie? Sure.
Middle class small businesses can’t afford NOT to know their costs, and price accordingly, and walk away from business that won’t break even at the least . . . and breaking even means the business owner got no dough in their pocket to pay their personal bills.
It’s ugly, it’s been ugly, it’s likely to get much uglier before it gets any better for the middle class workers and business owners.
Let’s not punch folks like DFH’s without some perspective and insight. That’s what the other asshats do, rich OR poor, we’re better n that. That’s how we are different. ;-)
Ya kiddin? I’m thinkin 70F max, 70%, kewling winds regularly, a downpour to cool more, n then BOOM, do it all over again.
That place DOES exist, yes? lol
Sleep?
Everyone has a nickname for it, I guess sleep is as good as any.
;-)
The insurance likely is!
Do we get a pic sometime with all these Skakira teasers?
I’d buy the political system, and enforce proggy socialism uber alles!
N pictures of Shakira’s butt where ever appropriate.
The ladies get to pic THEIR butt of choice without our male influence or complaints. Too. Also. That would go where ever Shakira went.
Life is fair, dammit. If I owned it!

Yer on the wrong corner, get off our corner.
Thass some good stuff OFG, thanks for sharing! Ya need to post that at MyFDL if ya haven’t . . . that would be front paged in a flash!
*G*
South Cook Islands maybe. 80F – 70F. New Caledonia or Easter Island has 70s and 60s. The others tend to be jungle like. Forget the Caribbean, hot and humid or hot and dry.
Don’t know about front paging (I’ve a feeling I’m not popular with the FDL PTB lately), but I went ahead and posted it, as you requested.
Funny how much I liked and defended Obama then and now firmly believe it’s in progressives’ best interest if he LOST his re-election.
Unless the republicans manage to pick someone who appeals to people other than the residents of the psychiatric section of Bellevue, he will likely be elected.
“The fact that it was not Perry that named it and that it had been painted over was in TBogg’s post”
Uh… where?
“Yer on the wrong corner, get off our corner.”
Only bots allowed? I’m sure that approach will prove beneficial to productive discourse.
Don’t worry: I already said I’m gone after this thread.
Is it just me or has the quality of candidates on both sides been going downhill since… Hell: longer than I’ve been voting?
At the LINK. And the LINK is IN TBogg’s post.
Snort. So it’s cool to write a blog that clearly implies something so long as you link to a source that explains what bullshit you’re talking?
There are two reasons you should give it up, OldFatGuy:
1) Everyone with active brain cells knows TBogg was deliberately misleading.
2) They don’t care. Truth is irrelevant, all that matters is advancing the agenda.
Assuming that you’re talking about Cheney…his pulse has already stopped. Just declare him dead and bury the fucker.
Bellevue?
I’m convinced the Republican Party is Arkham Asylum – if you’re not already nuts when you get into it, you will be before too long.
I was so overcome with reulsion and hatred, I forgot he was already the undead.
Spotts1701@71: Have you seen “King of Hearts?”
You should read more carefully.
If you had, you would see that I stipulated covering costs. This wasn’t about covering costs. It was about the owner being able to pocket x percentage of profit, without which he didn’t think it was worth getting out of bed in the morning. Given that MY JOB was to write up proposals and manage jobs, I was well-versed in “how much things cost.” The company owner insisted that if he couldn’t make “how much things cost” plus another 35% then he wasn’t going to bother with the job. And as it turns out, that worked out well for him – because all the other guys who were willing to take “how much things cost” plus 20%, or 15%, or 10%, or just enough to cover expenses including their own labor – were the ones who got all the jobs. Some of them are getting back pretty close to the work volume they had before the downturn. But not my former boss. The 3 actual workers he still has working with him doing plumbing and carpentry said he’s got something like 20 or 25% of the business volume he had in 2008. And he wouldn’t have that if he hadn’t made a niche in the historic building market. He’s not getting ANY work on newer buildings; those folks are all going with more affordable options.
I’d also note that I’m not in California, and most places aren’t California when it comes to the real estate and construction biz.
Last of all, I’ll just note that I currently run my own small business, which would explain why I’m a bit testy when someone wants to assume that I don’t know what it costs to run a business and keep the doors open.
You rock Jenn.
That made me think of this classic bit of nerdcore:
Why Won’t Jesse Helms Just Hurry Up And Die?
