Newt Gingrich is the strongest Republican candidate when matched head to head against Democratic President Barack Obama, according to a McClatchy-Marist Poll released Tuesday.
The former speaker of the House of Representatives is neck and neck with the incumbent president, back just 2 percentage points among registered voters. Obama leads 47 percent to 45 percent.
There was a time when I held out hope that the nomination would somehow fall into the clutching claws of Sarah Palin but she instead opted to remain President of Facebookistan, Queen Mother of Griftersylvania. But, Newt? Really? I guess it really is true that when God closes one door he opens another one which, in this case, conceals an open elevator shaft.
My only concern now is that Newt may also bow out, choosing to run for president of another younger hotter country…

How is it even possible? I can see Newt being neck and neck with his sexual harassing/wife cheat counterpart in the pizza-stained pimp hat, but Obama?
Yeah, it would be bad if everyone in the country had to listen to Newt’s withdrawal speech as we all lay in bed recovering from cancer.
Cancer has to go away for us to recover from it.
I wish The Salamander would, but I won’t hold my breath.
Newt just wants to see how much money he can finagle for himself by running a campaign, much like Sarah but a tiny bit less obvious about it. (Although I have to admit that the constant drumbeat during his appearances/interviews of “I wrote a book about [subject]” makes it a _very_ tiny bit less.) Unless he pulls out ahead by a huge amount, I imagine once he thinks he’s milked it as much as it’s worth, his campaign will quietly fold its tents and go home.
“…choosing to run for president of another younger hotter country…”
Brilliant, just fucking brilliant.
You know what’s funny though? I can’t think of anyone even remotely in the running to become the Republican nominee about whom I don’t find myself saying “Oh please, oh please”, including the final and inevitable “Not Mitt Romney” dramatized here.
In other words in my Larsonesque “Oh please, oh please let Obama get to run against ______.” prayers these days, that blank can pretty much be filled in with the words “a Republican”.
Jon Stewart had it right. Obama, in terms of being a candidate next year, is the luckiest MF alive.
It will of course be Romney, and Romney is caught by the gravitational pull of the fact that he’s Bob Dole, basically, and can’t escape it.
“…that he’s Bob Dole (without the personality)”.
There, fixed it for ya.
Bob Dole didn’t have any personality until after the election. In fact apparently he had personality before it also, according to those who knew who he was (unlike me) and only mysteriously was devoid of any whatsoever for precisely the period that he was a candidate.
“Undertaker” was the popular take at the time, and it fit very well, this grey, featureless, expressionless and sort of morbid character. Maybe that’s why he referred to himself in the third person, as if acknowledging that he had left himself somewhere else for the duration of the campaign.
Incidentally I just watched the Jon Stewart clip and it’s actually Romney he was calling “the luckiest motherfudger alive”, not Obama, as I had remembered.
I guess if you think that getting to run against Obama and lose hideously is lucky then that’s true, but I think it applies more to Obama.
My only concern now is that Newt may also bow out, choosing to run for president of another younger hotter country…
This is why I will never know how to quit yew, TBogg.
None of them have been paying attention to him before now, they’ve been transfixed by the freak show, and maybe all they know is that “liberals” hate him. Since he is someone besides Mitt
Romney they are sticking with him! Until someone better comes along…
Newt seems to believe that possessing so many past(and future: see Freddie Mac) scandals will overwhelm the ADD-afflicted average GOP voter, who will eventually shrug his/her shoulders and vote for him, because, well, at least he’s not black and he hates Bill Clinton. And he may be right.
Also, he’s forgotten more about grifting than Palin will ever know.
As much as I would love the spectacle of a Gingrich candidacy (in a sick and twisted way), I am afraid that, like all the other notRomney leaders, he is destined to self destruct in a spectacular technicolor flame out
‘“…that he’s Bob Dole (without the personality, sparkling wit and boyish charm)”.
There, fixed it for ya.’
The remarkably funny thing about all this is that “the intellectual” in the GOP field is the only one who’s stupid enough to actually believe that he could make a serious run for the Presidency by beating out Mitt. Sure, Joan of Bachmann thinks so, but she’s not stupid so much as she’s Touched By God. Newt? Not even The Thing That Lives On Donald Trump’s Head thinks he could run a better campaign than John McCain.
There, fixed it for you.
Eh? Newt doesn’t wear magic undies.
That’s about it. Otherwise, the 1% owned “media” also touts how Newtie’s so schmart ‘n all, and it’s fine to “smart” if you’re a Republican, but clearly it’s “elitist” if you’re a Democrat. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Agree with some others, above. Newt’s forgotten more about grifting than Bible Spice will ever know. Don’t think Newt really wants the jawb… he’s been recruited by the 1% (who buy him off handsomely, thanks v. much) to be the fluffer for Mittens, who will be the candidate. The Christianists will refuse to vote for Willard bc of his magic undies, and Obama will “win” bc that’s what is desired by the 1%. That’s my story. We’ll see how it pans out.
I think the ‘edit’ function has been GOP’d. The last sentence should actually be the third sentence (and was, in the preview..)
I’ve said it before and it remains true for at least some significant fraction of the populace; The American Voter: A Goldfish on Pot.
This is just an example of the more people get to know Newtie, the more they hate him.
Let’s face it, memories fade and as America gets to know this salamander better and have their memories refreshed there will be a chasm in support the size of the Grand Canyon.
Unless another scandal against him comes up, read his lobbying, and he has to drop out.
Well, the cream always rises to the top. I mean, Newt is the quintessential Republican. He has the Republican family values and ethics credentials to back him up.
Jarvis Cocker (specifically the fourth line)
“He received a B.A. in history from Emory University in Atlanta in 1965. He received an M.A. in 1968, and then a PhD in modern European history from Tulane University in New Orleans in 1971.[10] His dissertation was entitled “Belgian Education Policy in the Congo: 1945–1960″“….”In 1970, Gingrich was appointed an Assistant Professor in the history department at West Georgia College (now the University of West Georgia) in Carrollton. In 1974 he moved to the geography department. While at West Georgia, Gingrich was instrumental in establishing an inter-disciplinary Environmental Studies program. He left at the end of the 1977–1978 academic year, after being denied tenure.[12] He also taught a class, Renewing American Civilization, at Kennesaw State University (then called Kennesaw State College) in 1993.[13]“…”For over two decades, Gingrich has taught at the United States Air Force’s Air University, where he is the longest-serving teacher of the Joint Flag Officer Warfighting Course.[82] In addition, he is an honorary Distinguished Visiting Scholar and Professor at the National Defense University and teaches officers from all of the defense services.[83][84] Gingrich informally advised Defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld on strategic issues, on issues including the Israeli–Palestinian conflict and encouraging the Pentagon to not “yield” foreign policy influence to the State Department and National Security Council.[85] Gingrich is also a guiding coalition member of the Project on National Security Reform.”
Sum smaart fella….
Should be adopted as the official song for OWS….
Democracy is good too …
“The Thing That Lives On Donald Trump’s Head” — really funny
Why yes, that’s quite the resume ol’ Newster has. Funny how once he was denied tenure (back when that was fairly rare) he’s been sucking at the government teat and “teaching” quite a bit out of his area of research and “expertise”, unless of course he was teaching Advanced Grifting 301 to Air Force pilots.
I just have a difficult time reconciling his Tulane dissertation with his later ‘specialisations’. Must be too smaart for me.
I wonder if Newt has a basket of hands to go with his PhD.

Huh…Althouse was sober in that video? That guy is struggling with the idea as to whether Perry’s performance is a fair yardstick for determining his capabilities to be POTUS…then mentions Bush and Reagan as examples. So I’m not sure if he was making the case for or against Perry. Very odd.
Who on earth watches “Bloggingsheads”? Except to mock.
Low quality production & low quality content. Really, how “confined to bed recovering from X” do you have to be to watch this crap?
One flash in the pan after another, until the day all the Gops will be standing in that booth, moaning, “Awwww… Mitt loaf again?”
I expect Jon was calling Mittens lucky for the quality of his GOP competition. As for Dole, he did get off a funny line once in a while.
