In lieu of a random ten here are, in no particular order and without explanation because I know what I like in music but I don’t know how to express it properly, my 10ish favorite CD’s of The Year Of Our Tebow 2011:
(Warning: links are to youtube videos so … noise)
Fucked Up – David Comes To Life
The Joy Formidable – The Big Roar
Washed Out – Within and Without
Telekinesis – Desperate Straight Lines
Yuck – Yuck
War On Drugs – Slave Ambient
The Wilderness Of Manitoba – When You Left The Fire (If you’re big fan of CSN&Y, highly recommended)
Cults – Cults
The Black Keys – El Camino
Smith Westerns – Dye It Blond
and a guilty pleasure: Awolnation – Megalithic Symphony which was a shit-ton of fun to listen to when the L&T Casey and I drove to San Francisco a few months ago. So sue me.
Here’s more Joy Formidable because they were the best live act I saw this year.
- I almost forgot to add that someone (one of youse guyz) send me the first two seasons Breaking Bad, but you forgot to include your name. You should all claim credit. I’d never know the difference and you’d be eligible to have your name entered in an exciting contest for one of my internal organs should Tebow smite me down for being a potty-mouth. Act now… our operators are standing by.

Thank the goddess all those Whoever’s-Ass commenters will get their fix now!
Thanks, I needed that. I was gettin’ all twitchy and sweaty without Shakira, sort of like Rick Perry gets when he’s asked a difficult question like “why is there air”.
Breaking Bad is bad ass! Don’t forget Season 3…
I’m still kicking myself that I missed the chance to see TJF, even though it would have meant a five-hour round trip. Still, I did get to see Wild Flag, whose debut is in my top 10, and whose live sets are just riveting.
How do we send T stuff? I’m a little cheap these days on buying books but I’ll burn a CD any ol’ time.
Anybody know?
Thanks for the format deviation. I can’t claim random anymore since dead drives trashed my library. Not the best year in recent memory, but some good stuff came out indeed:
Philip Glass & Michael Nyman – Works for Saxophone Quartet
Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble – Live, I forsee the Dark Ahead – If I Stay
Jazzanova – Coming Home
Nettle – El Resplandor the Shining in Dubai
Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood – Live In Case the World Changes Its Mind
David Solid Gold vs Bill Laswell – Dub of the Passover
Lee Scratch Perry – Nu Sound & Version
Gorillaz – The Singles Collection
Jah Wobble & the Modern Jazz Ensemble – 7
Beirut’s Rip Tide
that gets me back to October, but I suspect there was some good stuff released earlier this year….
Amazon doesn’t allow (or make it easy to know how) you include your name. I emailed you at tblogg when I ordered the BB DVDs. Enjoy and thanks for all you do.
Two thumbs up for TJF. Easily the most electric show I’ve seen in years.
just above the blogroll on the right is his Amazon wishlist from which you can order stuff that will be sent directly to Casa Bogg. Now if you don’t want to make money for the Amazon borg, you’re kind of SOL
Much obliged. I’m going to bite the bullet and give the man something… someday. :)
i spend most of music time and money digging through old records but there were a few newies of note this year.
with some shame, i admit to catching the ‘chill wave’ and really liked that washed out lp as well. on the same tip was:
peaking lights – 936 (also checkout their amazing remix of wooden shjips – lights out)
michael kiwanuka – tell me a tale ep (Amazing. this guy is due for a big breakout)
bloood orange – coastal grooves (sounds like if an gay inner city chicago kid made a new wave record in the 80′s)
soft metals – self titled
almunia – new moon (pink floyd if they moved to indonesia and started surfing and doing really good drugs)
arthurs landing – self titled lp (a group of ex-arthur russell disciples getting together for a jam)
also, too a mysterious re-edit outfit called psychemagik have put out some amazing singles this year and have a full length lp out soon. their dj mixes are top shelf as well (like this one which played on loop most of the year for me). also on the compilation/mix tip check out ‘after the void’ on light sounds dark.
a kind of confused year for new music but some real freshness emerged from those seeking a different identity. as always though, the real good stuff is found in dusty vinyl bins. get digging!
Someones ass, I won’t say who’s, was not keeping time with TJF. Or was it the other way ’round? More booze please.
Error-prone Tebow’s first-smiting attempt would probably deliver you to Leggy-Super-Model Heaven and his second attempted smiting would turn you into Shakira’s loofah sponge!
Happy New Year, everybody. May the Shakira be with you, always!
I would in addition to The Joy Formidable and Yuck add to the mix
In the Pit of the Stomach by We Were Promised Jetpacks
Strike Hard! by the 65s
Behind the Parade by Tommy Keene
Hit After Hit by Sonny and the Sunsets
and of course I forgot
Grand Theatre vol. 2 by the Old 97s and
Belong by The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
