Shorter Ross Douthat:
It would be a shame if Americans of all beliefs did not take this moment in time to arrive at some grand compromise over what we can and cannot do with or to our naughty bits, and by “grand compromise” I mean stop doing things that I find personally abhorrent.

The other Reese recently said: “I have the body I earned. I had two kids and I’m still strong and healthy.” Which means that at some point, she must have whispered huskily to her partner, “you know, I’m not on the pill.” Ross must be so jealous.
Christ, how many times can he write this same intellectually dishonest column before the Times finally pulls him aside and says “Uh, Ross…do you have anything else? How about something on those cats with extra claws or that squash they found in Denver that looks like Chris Christie? People like that stuff, Ross.”
Jesus, talk about a one hit wonder. This guy is the Kajagoogoo of editorial writing.
That really is just what it all comes down to, isn’t it? Unless everyone agrees to behave the way the rightest of wingnuts insist, they’ll do all they can to tear the country apart.
“Jesus, talk about a one hit wonder. This guy is the Kajagoogoo of editorial writing.”
I think you’re being generous. Douthat is no Kajagoogoo. He aspires to be a Kajagoogoo.
When will asshats like Douthat understand? There is no compromise, middle ground, whatever, when it comes to controlling other people’s bodies.
Actually, the wingnuts don’t really want a compromise on social/cultural issues. As long as they keep fighting the same old war, that means votes, and Ross can write the same columns year after year. To compromise would mean just starting a new war over the “compromise.”
Point taken. Since he believes religous institutions have the right to ignore federal law if the law does not coincide with their beliefs, then I have a simple question. If Roe vs. Wade were to be overturned and abortions banned, and my church (The 7th Day Hatmandus), opened a hospital that provided abortions because we are strictly pro-choice, he would have no problem with that right?
I’m afraid the Archduke of Abstinence’s tiny little head would start to smoke like a Fembot from Austin Powers.
It’s twats like Douthat who can learn of the rape of children by church authority figures and blame hippies for the rape. Speaking praise to authority and pointing fingers at the blameless guarantees a steady paycheck.
Funny how wingnuts always mean “stop disagreeing with me” when they say “compromise.
If only he were a twat — or was at least within a hundred miles of one not belonging to a female version of himself (god-bothering panty-sniffing scold division). I honestly don’t know how our worthy host TBogg can stand to go over to the NYT site and read his BS.
Another day, more whinging about sex from Douchehat (Jeebus but I love that name). Talk about your one trick pony, what is this fascination with other people’s behavior in the bedroom? Oh, all right, or in the back seat, or swinging from chandeliers, or wherever. Ross just seems to have issues over things other people enjoy that will never, ever affect him personally. Granted he’s not alone in this – yes, I’m looking at you, Mr. Man-on-Dog No Contraceptives – but one would think the editorial section of the New York Times would have better things upon which to focus.
More provocation and filth, please.
Kajagoogoo did have several UK hits, and got to #78 with their followup to “Too Shy,” “Hang On Now,” in the US. Also, despite its fluffy shallowness, I recall enjoying hearing “Too Shy” back in the day. While perhaps fluffy and shallow, however, Douthat is in no way enjoyable.
Methinks Douchehat doth protest way too much. Lately he’s incessantly tirading & scolding all citizens to “do what Douchehat *says* (and allegedly what the vaunted “Church” says),” which is not necessarily what Douchehat, himself, & the Pedo-Priests actually DO.
amirite?
And who died and appointed Douchehat to be the sex police??
Pervert.
And what about Mormons? Isn’t he opening the door to returning their favorite force multiplier? Polygamy was a powerful tool when it came to being fruitful and attracting and retaining the all important male demo.
Isn’t pretty much every conservartive’s definition of “compromise” summed up as “you give me everything I want?”
You know, after all of the MEN get through opining about what women should be doing with their bodies and it occurs them that their wives (and, or girlfriends) will no longer be getting the contraceptives that they have always gotten through their health care provider and they will now have to purchase them retail, the outcry is gonna make the SGK kerfluffle look like “mildly anxious women said some things”.
The war on women’s bodies is not going to be pretty. All (other than gays who generally chose when to get pregnant, if they so desire) women of child-bearing years just are not going to stand for this. I promise you, it’s gonna be all out war. Not all women need an abortion, but ALL women need contraception if they aren’t the Duggers.
And as an aside, I know 3 women that have had abortions. They were ALL Catholic.
I know I’m not being snarky, but this is really serious business. The Catholic church is going to be coming out on the bad end of this fight and assholes like Boehner are going to be backtracking like mad. When the stupid ‘Personhood’ bill loses in Mississippi for Christ’s sake, what more evidence do these jokers need?
I just read at TPM that the less rabid of the GOP delegation are begging Boehner & Co to back down on the contraception fight, because exactly as outrageoftheday says, “it’s gonna be all out war”, and the saner GOPers know that they will lose.
I hope that’s true. I was unfortunate enough to hear a tape of Boehner’s insanely rabid declaration of war on the Pres.
He ain’t seen nothin’. I’m telling everybody, if the bishops don’t back down, if the White House DOES back down, I will be, for the first time in forty years of voting, a ONE-ISSUE VOTER.
And it doesn’t matter that I no longer need contraception. I was lucky enough to come of age just as the pill became widely available, and when the Pill proved to have some problems as then formulated, there were other means available. Did you know that diaphragms were available quite early (through, guess! Planned Parenthood! first of all) but there were laws against teaching about or publicizing them. This is part of what was reversed in Griswold v. Connecticut.
There’s a reason my favorite Seinfeld eps are the ones where Elaine chooses her criteria for who’s “sponge-worthy.”
I hope the Komen fiasco has taught many women who thought the war was won in the ’70′s that we CAN.NEVER.GIVE.UP. We must STAY VIGILANT or they will take everything away from women. And it will start with birth control.
Now, to my TBogg friends, I apologize for the shouting. But I am one pissed-off old woman.
“Now, to my TBogg friends, I apologize for the shouting. But I am one pissed-off old woman.”
Me, too! I remember when the pill became available. I remember the marches to take control of our bodies. I’m telling you, there are not a lot of women left who have not had access to birth control as a matter of course. It’s part of their lives and they would NEVER question it. To have it yanked away would be, not only astonishing to them, it would be like a home invasion.
SGK and the Republicans have awakened a sleeping GIANT. Women vote. They vote in larger numbers than men. Women are actually more educated than men. The Boehners of this world are anachronisms. They just don’t understand that this is SETTLED, DONE and we’re not going back. God, this stirs up big-time emotions in women, and they really should not try to deal with emotional women.
You may have also heard this one “Women are the only group to become more radical as they get older.”
That’s even more true for those, as you say, who take things like birth control, and being able to work for a living, and get credit in your own name for granted. Because they think they haven’t experienced discrimination for being women, so when they do…and eventually, they do…they are FURIOUS.
You betcha! Yeah, I’m more radical now. And my 90-year-old mother is slightly to the left of Che Guevara, and she votes. This is not going to end well for Republicans and social conservatives. Taking away rights that have already been bestowed (see: Prop 8) does not do well in this country.
And I hope women come out against these discriminatory voting laws, too. If they can get THEM, they can get YOU.
I’ve known – haven’t we all – men like Ross.
And every single one of them are gay and still in the closet.
I was talking with my 80 year old mother tonight and she said that men are going to have a rude awakening because if assholes like Douchehat succeed in removing birth control access from women, then women will start behaving differently and they won’t be putting out like they do now when they have access to good birth control.
And it’s such a different world than when my mother was young and frisky. The modern pressures and laws make an entirely different landscape than when young men could knock up women and it would be all her fault and responsibility.
Sooooo cool (your mother). I’ll tell you, these asshole men (and women..I’m looking at you KLo) are gonna get creamed (no Santorum pun) and it will be all of the 70, 80 and 90-year-olds that will totally disgrace people like Rick Santorum and the Catholic church. What women have gone through to vote and have control over their bodies is a great civil rights story and they are NOT gonna put up with retrogrades trying to take it back.
Just what kind of insane bubble do these people live in that they think this is a winning issue? Hell, 98% of CATHOLIC women use birth control.
Okay, now I’m gonna check my blood pressure because if anything drives me out of my mind is someone telling me what to do with my body. And I get mean when I get mad.
I wrote the WH on this. I’m afraid that my missive used the F-word several times … as in ‘We’re fucking tired of’ [fill in blank].
I think my most-senior-aunt was to the left of Che before Che was even in politics. She still is. And she doesn’t vote for Rs.
The poll results I saw indicate that the only people this crap flies with are fundy Protestants. No one else. And the comments at my local Major newspapers were running about 20 to 1 against the GOoPers and their war on women.
Good. I’m not a scold, in that I LOVE snark. I love Wonkette and Charles Pierce and Instaputz and Sadly No!. I love sarcasm and making fun of jerks and idiots. But I cannot abide real threats to my actual liberty because of some phony, lying son of a bitch who sees political advantage (only God knows why) in strafing women’s rights. I don’t know why, but every time I hear these assholes talk about what women ‘need’ I want to go all ‘Inglorious Basterds’ on their ass and carve something into their foreheads. Got any good ideas?
How about “Lysistrata was here — dude!” ?
I gotcher compromise right here: Bill control pills, Plan B, and abortion will remain legal, and men will refrain using any of them. Also, homosexuals will be allowed to marry, and Republicans will not be allowed to get divorced.
The United States of America is not a church, nor is it a business.
You right-wing s.o.b.’s can get fucked.
Wow. I had no idea so many of Tbogg’s commenters are a bunch of old women. Full disclosure here, I’m a proud old (65) woman. It is good to know that all the other ladies who went through the days of limited options (if any) and had our entire lives affected by gaining access to birth control are all het up like I am.
In the “good old days” access to birth control was chancy, at best, and that didn’t stop people of childbearing age from engaging in intimate activities. It just meant that some kids didn’t get to go to college who otherwise would have, or some of them had more babies than they could afford sooner than they were able to cope with them, or had to face the prospect of giving a baby up for adoption because society applied so much pressure to do so, or endangered their own lives and/or health with unsafe, illegal abortions. This affected women and men.
Some damned fool comes along and wants to tell most of the population today that things should go back to “the good old days” is going to find out what happens when you mobilize old women and try to take away much of what is good in the lives of young men and women who are of childbearing age. Add in the enlightened old men who are happy to have been part of the change from sex-must-always-include-fear-and-hardship, and the one who wants to do the take-away is losing.
