Susan of Texas (who has infinitely more patience with McMegan than I do) waded into the McArgleBargle that is the comments over at McMegans’s Sociopaths With Broken Calculators site regarding Komen and Planned Parenthood which naturally led to a discussion about abortion.
And then this happened:
susanoftexas 2 weeks ago in reply to McMegan
You are pro-choice. You think women should be able to kill their babies. How is that moderate? The child will not be half dead, or kind of dead, or moderately dead. Just like abortion in the case of rape (dead baby) or incest (another dead baby). There is no moderate here. This isn’t tax policy. Either it’s murder and should be outlawed or we pass a law saying that abortion is a private matter of individual conscience, which we did. The middle ground is not “abortion should be legal but the mother should feel really really bad about it.”
McArdle:” I think that abortion should be legal, but I also think that it should be a last resort, and I’m all for the government using any non-coercive methods it can to encourage women to carry their pregnancy to term, including things that will make them feel bad about aborting. I think, for example, that sonograms should be mandatory before termination, I’m in favor of waiting periods and parental notification laws, and I’m agnostic on spousal notification.”

I think there’s a gray area, that almost no one on either end of the spectrum actually believes what they claim to (that fetuses somehow become babies at the will of the mother, or, alternatively, that abortion is actually morally equivalent to murder.) I’m sorry that makes you uncomfortable, but there you are; it’s an uncomfortable topic, on which there is never a happy answer.

Seriously, you think that women are so stupid about what is in their wombs that they should be forced to have an invasive vaginal ultrasound before they can get their legal abortion?Ever had one?
I have, 19 years ago, worst experience in an OBs office I ever had. Think sex toy but of terrifying proportions.
McMegan2 weeks ago in reply to just julie
Ever had an abortion? Considerably more invasive than a trans-vaginal ultrasound. In fact, there are lots of worse things that happen in women’s health clinics; be glad you haven’t experienced any of them.
Quite frankly, I’m surprised that McMegan didn’t finish that last “quitcher whining” harangue with a triumphant “Q.E.D. Case closed. In your face. Suck it.”.
So …. to summarize the libertarian response to how we treat our wimmens:
- Government should use “non-coercive” methods to shame women about choosing a perfectly legal medical procedure
- Government has the right to mandate a medically unnecessary photo-op with the maybe baby prior to the perfectly legal medical procedure
- Government has the right to impose a waiting (or call it a ‘cooling off’) period before women are permitted to have their perfectly legal medical procedure.
- Government has the right to shove a foreign object up a woman’s vagina to take another picture because it is not near as bad as that perfectly legal medical procedure and – you know, what – there are worse things in life so just shut the hell up, lie back and count your blessings.
Because you can’t make a libertarian omelet without breaking a few privacy eggs.

She’s such a vile, self-absorbed person with a nasty view of humanity. Your modern GOP right there, folks.
The women, in her mid- to late-thirties, is an idiot, and she’s paid for it.
I need that gig.
Run for your lives, women. McMegan’s in the kitchen with a turkey baster.
I suppose that if the woman is kind of pregnant, it’s okay to be moderate on abortion.
And to add to your excellent summary: “Government has the right to tell women to not have sex in the first place because contraceptives icky.”
I am a libertibertarian.
I’m all for the government using any non-coercive methods it can to encourage women to
carry their pregnancy to termhave my rape baby, including things that will make them feel bad aboutabortingjust saying no.She does understand what “non-coercive” means, doesn’t she? And that the Virginia proposed law would force women to undergo this procedure without their consent? And that women undergoing abortions are choosing to do so? She really is a stupid fucking idiot.
I prefer the classics: “Everybody run, the libertarian ninny’s got a gun.”
Since trans-vaginal ultrasound isn’t as invasive… it’s not really so bad. So the coercion is more like simple than aggravated assault?
You’re forgetting to apply the libertarian definition of “coercion”: Anything short of a government agent putting a gun to your head doesn’t rate.
McMegan can afford to be flippant about this, because even a medical professional wouldn’t want to fuck her with a trans-vaginal ultrasound probe.
The subspecies that is most prevalent is the “libertarian leaning” conservative. They want a little of column A and a little of column B and shove paying for it up yer ass.
That a female can endorse, support and defend the stripping away of human rights which are both specifically and generally applicable to her tells me that the desire to be part of the perceived power structure has once again utterly overwhelmed self-respect and common sense. Jewish Nazis – not from self-preservation but with admiration…. If I could, I’d go ahead and accept the membership in society which she is so damned eager to give up.
Well, they are dead set against it shoved down their throats. Maybe they’re just more amenable to other orifices…
From the end of blogpost:
“This woman is not pro-choice. She doesn’t have the faintest idea of the meaning of consent. Authoritarian children seldom do. They were forced to obey then and they are still obeying now. All these libertarian children play at politics, telling themselves that they are principled, that they are socialy liberal but fiscally conservative. They are neither; they are obedient children who refuse to accept repsonsibility for their own choices. They will elect leaders who destroy the economy they so cherish and take away all the freedoms they constantly demand. They are frightened, angry and resentful, and they are determined to make others suffer as they think they suffer.
The sight of someone free to make his or her own choice makes them livid. How dare the left reject the one true God, the absolute authority of the father, the social mores imposed by the priests! Liberals are bad, bad people–we read it over and over in rightwing sites. Liberals do not respect the authority of God or men. They are all weak women whether male or female, they are bad and dirty and they must be punished. So while we try to defend individual freedom they try to eliminate it–and us. God is love, obedience is freedom, dogma is truth. Megan McArdle, a supposed libertarian, believer in absolute personal freedom, cannot even begin to understand the concepts of choice and consent. She is a child and should be treated as one; patted on the head and sent home to Mother.
By showing libertarians and conservatives respect we are only encouraging them. They think they are winning the battle for control over the disobedient because we give in, submit to their authority. Every time anyone accomodates the right they give them hope and encouragement and support, spurring them on even harder than before.”
Back in the old days, those women who’se family were of means could always go to their OB/GYN and have the unwanted pregnancy discretely ended and the medical notes on their chart would never mention pregnant. It was the poor who had to suffer.
If the right to lifer’s got their way tomorrow, that would still be the truth. That is why you don’t see wealthy conservative women decrying republican theocons.
“Because you can’t make a libertarian omelet without breaking a few privacy eggs.”
Hmmm, I see what you did there.
Why can’t Susan of Texas be paid to write for the Atlantic, while McMegan keeps herself busy mixing up bechamel or whatever the fuck it is she does in that ghastly kitchen of hers? What a world we live in.
I wouldn’t fuck McCardle with your
dickstate legislatureI would like to be blunt. If anything is inserted into a person when they don’t want it to be, whether it’s a sonogram thingy, a broom stick or a penis, it’s RAPE. These idiots think they can just pass a law and it’s not RAPE but it is and I’m waiting for the lawsuits to begin – soon. This is outrageous.
In fairness, it’s almost refreshing to at least hear a retarded woman busy herself with belittling and denying the rights of women to control their own reproductive health. After all, most of the time the GOP and their fellow travelers tend to leave the talking on that sticky subject to men, preferably men sworn to celibacy in the guise of lifelong fellatio of an imaginary sky being. So there’s that.
It just hasn’t been the same since men started letting women wear shoes and vote. As good conservatives, we really need to address those issues too.
Also, too – it’s really mean and unfair for these harlots to tell Ross Douthat that he’s a really lousy lay.
I believe this is OK if you’re a libertarian because their current god, Dr. Ron Paul (who really is an ob/gyn, BTW), says that it’s only a no-no if the Federal government wants to abrogate your rights.
The Commonwealth of Virginia? Eh, not so much.
Also, too: aren’t these the same twatwaffles who want to get government out of their private lives? I guess “private lives” doesn’t necessarily include “private parts” if you’re not a penis-American.
Oh, and also too also: Where the fuck is the AMA on this? Hello? Anybody home? “First, do no harm”? Hello?
[crickets]
I’m looking forward to the first call to the police – the correct response to rape is call the cops and lay the charge. Whether there is or is not a civil ‘law’ allowing this action, I’m betting the criminal code has not been amended.
McArdle, once again, shows the world she’s just another spoiled, empathy-lacking child who has substituted slogans for thinking which, I think in this case, can be summed up as: “I’m no slut, so slut shame away…”
WHOA THERE… Anti-McMegan therapy now available. [warning: significant basset action, not like the usual snoozy tbogglian boys. viewer discretion advised]
Baby oh baybeee!
Damn fine flews.
Lucky, lucky me! I got to have one of those soon to be “probes” to see if the “mass” in my trying to get pregnant parts in 1997 was cancer. What made the experience even more horrible/shameful/painful was that in order to ‘get a real good look’ I had to drink more liquid than you would consume at a free kegger party and then attempt to not piss myself before the probin was conveninet for the prober.
Turns out, I’m barren and the “mass” was a mere cyst, so my so-called tradition marriage doesn’t mean diddly on acounta we’re now in it for the pleasure and companionship.
Nope. I’ll NEVER forget the humilation.
So, McMegan is pronouncing herself an expert because of first-hand experience?
Thank you TBogg and other male responders for caring enough for the females in your life to stand up for us. I wish I could say we girls don’t need any help, but looks like we do, more and more every day. I no longer need birth control, because I am old enough to remember when there wasn’t any. And we do not want to go back there.
I have seen a lot of progressive changes. When I was working and got pregnant, it was when pregnancy had just won the designation of being a disability which meant my company could not fire me when I became pregnant and had to let me come back to my job after the “oh so short” six weeks with my baby, not offer me a job 2000 miles away somewhere to satisfy the requirement You have no idea how hard corporations fought to give pregnant women who wanted their babies- nothing!!!.
To say it is a slippery slope to no real public rights is not a joke.
My response, left on the Atlantic’s web site:
“So it’s okay for the government to mandate medically unnecessary non-consensual trans-vaginal ultrasounds because, hey, abortion feels worse. McMegan the libertarian thinks it is perfectly acceptable for a government to stick large uncomfortable objects up people’s bodily orifices in order to discourage them from doing things McMegan frowns on.”
Oh, I doubt that, but suggest we pass legislation to insist upon it for her immediately.
http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/50leg/2r/bills/hb2838p.pdf
Arizona House Bill 2838. Currently held in committee – but no one knows for how long. Effectively eliminates a woman’s ability or right to speak for her own body. Prosecutes and imprisons a physician who performs an abortion if that abortion took place 20 weeks + 1 minute after conception.
Why the hell do I want to stay in Arizona?
Again- the point TBogg makes repeatedly: McMegan and her ilk have no sense of irony.
Shaming people is a key doctrine of the right wing. Some states have mandated drug tests for welfare claimants, not because claimants use drugs at a higher rate than the general population or because testing saves the taxpayers money, but because it demeans people.
Problem with McArdle comparing sticking a plastic vaginal probe up a woman’s vagina with having an abortion is that consent very deeply matters. It’s like the argument comparing being “tortured” as a military trainee and really being tortured.
When you’re a military trainee, you’re informed as to what will happen, you’re told the day and time it will happen, you’re surrounded by friends. Yes, the physical pain may be precisely the same as what you’d get in a real torture session, but the context of being kidnapped, flown to the US, stuck in a cramped cell, called all sorts of insulting names and seeing your co-prisoners being abused makes the pain vastly greater and more traumatizing.
I had a medical procedure done many years ago. It was extraordinarily painful and left me sore in that spot for the rest of the day. It had no ill psychological effects, I never had flashbacks, etc. Why? Because I knew that the doctor was trying to help me, there were no bad intentions on his part. It would have resulted in trauma and flashbacks had the doctor been visibly enjoying my pain and calling me an evil terrorist.
Gotta love “Libertarians” who are all for government intrusion into areas THEY deem appropriate, while everything else is “pork” and “treading on inalienable rights”, etc. Oh wait. No I don’t.
Before any man is able to fill a prescription for medication treating erectile dysfunction they should first submit to a drug test and a colonoscopy.
That’s excellent, but bear in mind this isn’t really about what “McMegan frowns on;” Megs doesn’t truthfully give a single damn about the unborn. She just wants to schlick to the torture of Teh Heathens. One still can’t yet successfully spin the beating or waterboarding of a woman seeking an abortion in a good light in America, but one might get away with makin’ ‘em spread their cooch for the crowd and jammin’ a huge rod all up in there, while Megs paws and flails at her own junk, disturbing the poor spiders.
Book Salon up with Josh Phillips’ None of Us Were Like This Before: American Soldiers and Torture hosted by Jason Leopold
Here is something that I never see the anti-abortion crowd considering:
IVF
In Vitro Fertilization
Here, they take embryos and implant some and freeze others. If there is more than one embryo implanted, sometimes they abort the extra one(s). And sometimes they throw away the frozen embryos.
Now, if they REALLY believe that embryos are fully human, than this is far, far worse than a single women facing a troubling pregnancy, because there are way more embryos involved.
So how come they don’t come out with legislation to outlaw IVF?
Hypocrites-R-rightwingnuts
PA state House is trying to ram through the “make the raped woman feel guilty for considering an abortion by showing them pictures of the baby” bill right now. No doubt planning next to make reporting rape a crime on the heels of sweeping Sandusky under the rug for this long.
Her so-called libertarian middle-of-the-roaderism on abortion sounds about the same as Ron Paul’s view: it’s OK if the pregnancy results from an honest rape, otherwise not so much.
Fuck ‘em all, you can’t FIX stupid.
Let women do their own thing, end of fucking story.
Harumph.
Oh, they do consider it:
Mississippi Rejects Anti-Abortion, Anti-Birth Control, Anti-IVF “Personhood” Measure
Also, and.
I wonder how many doctors will allow the idiots in the VA legislature to dictate what invasive medical procedures to perform on their patients?
My bet is doctors aren’t going to sit still for this either.
I’m sure that will be very comforting to a woman that is wishing to terminate a pregnancy that was the result of aggravated assault.
Mcmegan is a twit. It isn’t her job or the governments to force women to ponder the “morality” of the decision to terminate a pregnancy.
Does McMegan have children? If not, did she & the hubby use birth control? Or is it something about the fact that they are so, so tall? Or did her magic machine (only $1,200….. and really worth it!) render her sterile? Or are they just so afraid of contamination that they just don’t ‘do’ it? Come on, Megs, your adoring public wants to know. Clock is ticking, dontcha know?
I’m taken aback by the bile in the replies;
1. The consistent libertarian position is for the government to stay out of it.
Do I personally think abortion is taking a human life with its own unique never to be seen again human DNA? Of course it is. Unfortunately, government (especially this one) trying to “fix” this problem will only make things worse. Compare with invading countries to make them “free”; even if the motivation is pure, there is no government I have yet seen that can free people in that way without making things much, much worse.
2. The focus should be on bringing people of all stripes together to eliminate unwanted pregnancies, especially those from rape. You don’t bring people together with nasty bile-filled dialog.
3. An important critique against “States-rights” needs to be echoed; if it violates one’s rights it doesn’t matter if the federal or state or city or another citizen does it. Don’t let people like Ron Paul dodge questions of rights by kicking them down to the states.
1. The consistent libertarian position is for the government to stay out of it.
That memo doesn’t appear to have reached Dr Paul or Megan McNutball.
The government “staying out of it” would be to take a pro choice position and leave decisions of “morality” to the individual. Pro life is a misnomer, there are TWO LIVES involved in a pregnancy. A woman should be willingly able to decide whether or not to sacrifice vital nutrients and risk her life in order to bring another life into the world. A woman should not be FORCED to undergo the risks of pregnancy because it makes folks like Megan or Dr. Paul queasy to allow a woman to make her OWN call on the morality of terminating a pregnancy. After all, it is SHE who will have to live with ALL THE CONSEQUENCES of her decision, not Dr Paul or Megan McNutball.
The necessary actions are not obscure: recall all “leaders” who voted for this horror. Work to elect more progressive women to office, like http://www.emergeamerica.org/ And start showing up at their meetings, rallies and donor places of business to articulate your response.
Abortion is an intrinsic right- it is not granted by any state regardless of what men and their cockeyed laws may claim. It is the safety of abortion that is legislated.
Go fuck yourself concern troll. Have you been on Mars this entire month, where Republicans want to allow employers to not give hormonal birth control because of ‘religious freedom’ – they don’t give a shit about unwanted pregnancies. People like you no longer deserve the benefit of the doubt, if you ever did.
Disgusting coming up, but illustrative at least.
Hmmmm there are not enough liveturds being brought to term, so let’s make McMegan and all of her friends have a colonoscopy before they take a dump, though normally your intestines are cleaned out beforehand, but no more we need to see what is going to come to term, and this procedure is just for her and those whom are like her, and with no anesthesia, right, she has to be awake to see what is coming down the pike, so she will be shamed into normally letting a dead turd into the sewer system.
Makes no sense I know, but neither does she.
Now that is funny because they themselves the Rethugnuts are incapable of being shamed. When they voted against the stimulus they were later seen taking credit at ribbon cuttings for what the results of the stimulus was: jobs.
So, as long as an armed federal agent doesn’t come to my door and threaten to shoot me if I don’t hand over my tax dollars, it’s a good thing for the government to use other, non-coercive methods to gather the funds needed to accomplish it’s goals
And she gets to pay for the unnecessary procedure, as well.
Dearie, we’re not even sure after reading this tripe that McMegan has a vagina!
1. The consistent libertarian position is for the government to stay out of it.
Oddly, that’s Hillary’s position also.
http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/787841–hillary-clinton-stirs-the-pot-on-afghanistan-abortion-and-the-arctic
“You cannot have maternal health without reproductive health and reproductive health includes contraception and family planning and access to legal, safe abortions,” Clinton said Tuesday.
“I do not think governments should be involved in making these decisions. It is perfectly legitimate for people to hold their own personal views based on conscience, religion or any other basis. But I’ve always believed that the government should not intervene in decisions of such intimacy,” she said.
