Accused pedophile Jerry Sandusky’s lawyer, Joseph Amendola, in his opening statement:
“Jerry loves kids so much that he does things most of us wouldn’t think of doing.”
So. Much. Fail.

Accused pedophile Jerry Sandusky’s lawyer, Joseph Amendola, in his opening statement:
“Jerry loves kids so much that he does things most of us wouldn’t think of doing.”
So. Much. Fail.
Back in the hardcore punk boom there were a bazillion bands called “Jerry’s Kids.”
Different Jerry, different kids.
Sandusky should kill himself.
I still think the defense’s winning comment was: [Sandusky] isn’t a pedophile; he just has an ‘attention seeking disorder.’”
Hell for Sandusky will be the prison shower.
That is…breathtaking. A gasp-worthy gaffe.
I had to get off the boat to see if that was really a shorter. I don’t think a verbatim qualifies as a shorter. Holy shit, is that fail. That is beyond fail.
I’m kind of hoping the judge’s rejoinder to that comment was along the lines of “Counselor, that’s pretty much the nature of the accusation. That’s why we’re here.”
As a child molester Sandusky won’t be housed with the general population. As a rich and connected child molester he’ll likely end up in a medium security prison for a year or two, and at 68 years old, no doubt will spend the rest of his life on probation.
His victims get to be the guys molested by that guy from Penn State that ended up forcing Joe Paterno to retire in shame for covering it up.
“Jerry loves kids so much he insisted on sticking his business into their deep-seated problems. Every kid knew how much Jerry stood behind them.”
Wow, Sandusky’s own lawyers want him in jail.
It’s hard to be snarky about the Sandusky case.
Or, more likely: “Counselor, whose side are you on, exactly?”
This guy also let his client do that Bob Costas interview. And he may let Sandusky take the stand.
He’s such an incompetent lawyer that he’s probably on the short list to be Obama’s next solicitor general.
Wow, only 11 comments to blame Obama.
Wow. Woah. Well, I guess the lawyer made it clear just why Sandusky’s on trial, at least… in case anyone hasn’t been paying attention.
A possible – and not particularly snarky – shorter would be: Money talks most of the time, but not always.
Gotta earn those nickels somehow.
In this case, would “FacePsalms” be funnier?
Ding! You are today’s internets winner! To where would you like them delivered?
How bad was it?
Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports was brutal and openly contemptuous in his play-by-play of the defense counsel’s train wreck of a performance (“Amendola was a flailing mess by the end”)– you can almost smell the flop sweat.
I thought I was reading an Onion article when I saw the lawyer’s statement.
I know now that the glut of law school grads is not producing good attorneys. This one seems to be one of them. It may be that he hates pedophiles and is just collecting a check and making sure the conviction won’t get overturned on appeal.
Sandusky will probably end up in one of the prison units for sex criminals. That’s a whole different sort of joint. The guys who ran cover for him, they’ll have a worse time of it, if the do any time, that is.
Good for the lawyer. Hope the rest of the defense is equally inept. Bonus points if he’s doing it on purpose.
Excuse me for gratuitously using this thread to dump unlimited hostility upon the fetid all-your-privacy-belongs-to-us pyramid scam called Facebook but…
If Jerry Sandusky had only used Facebook to Skout for his next victims he might not have created his fake foundation and used his association with PSU as a front. Instead he might still be out there “helping” kids the way he loves to. Several child raping pedophiles give it a thumbs up.
Facebook’s response; We can’t help it if kids lie about their age.
Also disgusting; the link is from TPM that is now using Facebook for it’s comments. They are not alone as Gannett and several other news orgs make Facebook their default social media link. It is time to start boycotting Facebook and the sycophants who enable them.
No kidding. And good on that young man, Victim #4. It’s tough to do the right thing in a case like this and it sounds like he controlled the cross examination from start to finish and never lost his composure. If all the victims do this well Sandusky will be burnt toast crumbs crushed under their righteous boots.
Salon being one. I shreiked at them for doing it – to no avail. It’s not really a useful mechanism.
There’s a beautiful Karma operating here. Jerry pays shitloads of money to an incompetent hack who inadvertently helps the prosecution bury him.
On the other hand, by the end of this trial, Sanduski could appeal the verdict with a claim that his lawyer didn’t properly represent him.
That’s pretty difficult to do. The defendant has to prove that “but for” the negligent misrepresentation, he would have won.
A statement like: “Jerry loves kids so much that he does things most of us wouldn’t think of doing.” comes in as fact for the defense, and an admission favoring the prosecution, if it hasn’t been taken out of context. It’s difficult to argue that attempts at “spinning” the truth are negligence. (After all, that’s part of a defense attorney’s bag of tricks.) But the client isn’t guaranteed an outcome.
Will that be crucifixion or stoning for you, counselor? Btw I hate TPM’s turn to the dark side as well.
We’re talking about a guy who was fully expected to take Paterno’s place when Joe-Pa finally retired, but who retired in 1999 at the rather early age of 55 without getting any coaching offers anywhere else — despite being considered one of the best assistant coaches in the country.
Something tells me that not only did Penn State know about what he was doing, but (thanks to former PS alums and employees) so did every other college sports program in the country. He must have been blackballed years ago.
As you say, it’s the composure that is striking. I can’t imagine what it must be like to exhume this ghost that has been buggering him for what, fifteen years now. I’d like to think that this bring some healing, some closure– but you know, it’s never that simple, is it?
