I read an article that interviewed a military expert on the subject.

He said that between the movie, the initial presumption that it was a staged stunt related to the movie, the smoke bombs, the mass confusion, and the ballistic helmet & body armor, patrons having guns would not likely have made much difference. The shooter had planned too well and had too many advantages.

I don’t think that particular argument will get settled any time soon, or at least until there are a couple/three incidents where armed bystanders up the death toll with a re-enactment of the OK corral.

After the first time, they’ll call it an aberration and fap for awhile writing about how THEY would have handled it differently and been heros and everyone would finally agree they were right about everything. After second and third and fourth etc. it will get increasingly loud with the sound of crickets, unless one incident actually occurs where some Johnny Concealed Carry actually helps more than hurts and it will reset the argument all over again.

I believe that there was an armed bystander at the Gabby Giffords shooting, but he was wise enough not to even draw his weaapon before some brave unarmed bystanders were able to intervene and subdue the assailant. If he had, he might have been shot by police responding to the incident, creating more harm than good.

In the Colorado theater shootings, with a well-prepared shooter wearing body armor, it’s very unlikely anyone with a pistol would have accomplished anything except making themselves one of the first targets. And if they survived and got out of the theater, they might get shot by the police or another gun owner. The good guys don’t wear name tags, which makes it hard for even professionals to know who to shoot at, and amateurs are even worse at that game.

There is no such thing as “upping the death toll” in the mind of a teafucker, the gun nuts will just claim that the death toll would have been even higher if the armed bystanders hadn’t opened fire. They will claim this even if ballistics demonstrates that one or more people were shot with the bystander’s weapon(s). This is standard self-referential teatard logic at work.

More people shooting in a darkened movie theater after a couple of smoke bombs had gone off? What could possibly go wrong?

It isn’t as if this guy came in with a camo jacket sporting a hunting rifle and a florescent orange hat. He had a assault rifle with hundreds of rounds of ammo and was dressed in armor. (The kind the troops in Afganistan couldn’t get.)

This wasn’t hunting trip to Montana. This was mass murder. Someone sporting a hunting rifle won’t injure or kill 70-80 people in a span of a few seconds, but an assault rifle does mass damage in a little time as possible.

I know I’m pretty much speaking to the choir, but if the GOP and Tea Baggers are too stupid to see the plain facts in front of their faces, it’s up to us to kick them out of positions of responsibility.
