DHS/I&A assesses that lone wolves and small terrorist cells embracing violent rightwing extremist ideology are the most dangerous domestic terrorism threat in the United States.” – (“Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment” – 4/7/2009
About that report…
The Department of Homeland Security has stepped back for the past two years from conducting its own intelligence and analysis of home-grown extremism, according to current and former department officials, even though law enforcement and civil rights experts have warned of rising extremist threats.
The department has cut the number of personnel studying domestic terrorism unrelated to Islam, canceled numerous state and local law enforcement briefings, and held up dissemination of nearly a dozen reports on extremist groups, the officials and others said.
The decision to reduce the department’s role was provoked by conservative criticism of an intelligence report on “Rightwing Extremism” issued four months into the Obama administration, the officials said. The report warned that the poor economy and Obama’s election could stir “violent radicalization,” but it was pilloried as an attack on conservative ideologies, including opponents of abortion and immigration.
[...]
Daryl Johnson, formerly the senior domestic terrorism analyst at DHS and a principal author of the disputed report, confirmed in an interview that he left in frustration last year after his office was “gutted” in response to complaints.
“Other reports written by DHS about Muslim extremists … got through without any major problems,” Johnson said. “Ours went through endless reviews and edits, and nothing came out.”
Michelle Malkin on the report when it was issued back in 2009:
You cannot ignore the context or the timing of this DHS report. It’s no small coincidence that Napolitano’s agency disseminated the assessment just a week before the nationwide April 15 Tax Day Tea Party protests. The grass-roots events organized by fiscal conservatives, independents, Libertarians, and yes, even some blue Dog Democrats were fueled by the “current economic and political climate” of bipartisan profligate spending and endless taxpayer-funded bailouts. The growing success of the loose-knit movement has invited scorn, ridicule, and fear-mongering from Obama’s supporters. Liberal bloggers have likened the Tea Party movement to neo-Nazis, militias, and even Weather Underground terrorists.
These attempts to demonize the Tea Party movement come on the heels of widespread conservative-bashing over the recent shooting sprees in Pittsburgh and Binghamton, New York. Taking Hillary Clinton’s advice to “never waste a good crisis,” left-wing pundits and analysts have blamed the tragedies on everyone from Rush Limbaugh to Fox News to the NRA.
Back to being mau-maued by the Malkinites:
When the DHS report on “rightwing extremism” was leaked, Napolitano — who Johnson and other officials say had requested the report and heard a briefing in advance on its conclusions — initially defended it, saying “we must protect the country from terrorism whether foreign or homegrown.”
But after 20 conservative groups sponsored ads calling for Napolitano’s ouster, she said it was disseminated without regular review, and apologized to the American Legion for its warning that veterans could be targeted by militias for recruitment.
The DHS civil rights office subsequently was granted veto rights over all DHS reports on domestic terrorists, Johnson said.
Johnson and others said intelligence reports on the resurgence of militia groups in Michigan and Kentucky are among those being withheld by the agency, which he said was “screening for politically sensitive phrases or topics that might be objectionable to certain groups.”
From the NBC News (formerly MSNBC) site just now: “It was not immediately clear why local police were classifying the shooting as domestic terrorism. Federal law enforcement officials told NBC News the suspected gunman had no obvious connection to domestic terror or white supremacist groups and apparently was not on any list of suspected terrorists. The suspect was in his early 40s, and while he had an arrest record, it was for minor offenses, one federal official said.” Perhaps he had no direct ties to groups but: “Officials told NBC News the suspect, who served in the U.S. Army, had many tattoos. The suspect had some kind of radical or white supremacist views but, as far as officials said they had heard, he was not in any kind of radical organization.”
And, here is your bonus crazy courtesy of Jim Hoft’s House O’ Krylon Huffers:
I have no comment other than that guy at Hoft’s site certainly sounds reasonable and deserves a guest spot of Fox & Friends. Maybe his own show…

Great, great post.
What I’ll be reading and hearing tomorrow:
1. It is awful to politicize what happened in Wisconsin. Political discussions can and should wait.
2. The shooter was mentally ill and not influenced at all by anyone other than a poisoned mind.
3. Even if he didn’t have a gun, the shooter would have found a way to kill those Sikhs.
4. If some of those Sikhs were armed, some of them would be alive today.
5. Any hint that the shooter intended to kill Sikhs because he thought they were muslims should in no way, shape or form be linked to anything anyone said about harming muslims, ever.
Let me get this straight. Michelle Malkin forced Obama and his administration to gut the domestic terrorist oversight at DHS? Who knew such a tiny crazy person wielded such power?
Remind me again why strategic voting for democrats who are unable to offer a compelling defense against titans like Limbaugh and Malkin and have moved this country to the right by a determined policy of retreat and concession is the only reasonable position?
We all know a Tea Partier would be smart enough to target actual Muslims at a mosque, not Sikhs at a sikh Temple.
It was a Fat, Bald, heavily tattooed 45 year-old white guy so I’m sure you can see how people got confused?
I think EVERY Sunday to election day that David Axelrod reads the polling data of Obama down 5…secret orders will go out from the undergroun bunkers of the communist party USA to wage some localized blood bath in a swing state. These are fast and furious operations gone mad….the Satanic fundamentalist version of Chic Fil A harassment campaigns.
Heh, if we’re waiting for a 5% Romney lead,…
I am afraid that you are both right. This was a black flag fast and furious operation to malign white Christian gun owners, but the targeted the wrong congregation due to satanic incompetence. It’s another day in an Obama world.
Ahh, the heady aroma of smug self-martyrdom.
Well, as long as someone else is doing the literal martyrdom.
CT goes mainstream, baby!
Right, so this Lone Wolf had a tat. I get the swastika – white power & all that shit. Even the 666 -dude was badass evil. But WTF is up with the shamrock?
IRA?
IRA resistance in Ulster (fighting the Empire) meets South Boston ca. 1975 (White, white, white…
The Aryan Brotherhood also uses/used a Celtic cross, but that just confuses people. They look at the tatoo, and think “A prison gang composed of Enya fans…what’s up with that? “
The IRA were/are socialists. Now, if you want to talk about the Free State/Blueshirts – Franco & fascists …
Teh great Google tells me the tattoo in question is found among the members of America’s prison population known as the Aryan brotherhood.
I don’t think as a rule you’ll find a very…. nuanced grasp of post-Treaty, pre-WWII Irish politics in the white-supremacist community.
Or generally, for that matter. I don’t think we can consider US Rep. Peter King (R-IRA) a Socialist fellow traveler.
IRA?
Not likely.

King is a tribalist, plain and simple(ton).
And IRA does not equal ‘shamrock’ , though shamrock might equal green beer and general foolishness.
Look out Bill-O. He’s gunnin’ (you should pardon the expression) for your time slot. Roger? Rupert? Hurry up and ink a deal with this
white supremacistpatriotic American.http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/malkin?s=t
I’d get ‘gay married’ to lose that last name!
If you go out to the Lakeside/Santee (Klan-tee) part of San Diego, it’s not uncommon to to see skin heads with shamrock tattoos. It’s a White Pride thing…
Of course, if the shoe fits…
There have been at least 2 attacks – some fatal – on Sikhs in Sacramento:
The Tea Party can whine all it likes about how martyred they are, and how their Party “members” can distinguish between Sikhs & Muslims… but they don’t. And anyway, that begs the question: would be A-OK to just go shoot up Muslims in a Mosque????? But that wouldn’t equate “terrorism”?? sheesh
It was disgusting that DHS gave up their investigations of and reportings on white supremicist terrorism. Paging Morris Dees and the Southern Povery Law Center (which is also regularly bashed by rightwingers who wish to remain firmly in denial).
Do you mean “Individual Retirement Accounts”??????
That’s odd…..
:-)

Because “Democrats suck less”(tm).
I thought the were just Celtics fans.
Thanks for the heads up.
Hey! You are violating my copyright! Cease and desist!
Remind me again why strategic voting for democrats who are unable to offer a compelling defense against titans like Limbaugh and Malkin and have moved this country to the right by a determined policy of retreat and concession is the only reasonable position?
You’re right. We should elect rightwingers who will move this country to the right much more efficiently with a policy of advance and no-compromise. If we’re squeamish about voting for rightwingers, this can be accomplished by voting for a middle-wing third-party candidate who will safeguard our precious bodily purity with no risk of being elected to anything (and making us responsible for something).
The short answers are Yes and Yes. The first Yes would be accompanied by, “We don’t advocate violence, of course, but…” and the second by “Wolverines!!!11!!1!1″
Skinheads sporting shamrock tattos as a symbol of white pride?
That shit there is an example of some serious historical ignorance.
And don’t forget not voting at all as a protest! That’s my personal favorite.
I blame California schools.
I guess the Aryan Bro’s use the shamrock background just to give the image a little ‘smile & sparkle’? You know, to perk it up a bit; add a little whimsy.
Crap; what a world.
So when I see a shamrock tattoo on on a guys neck with “white pride” tattooed right beneath it, it’s just a proximity issue.
Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind.
dude, that kind of shit is just not funny man…..it makes me cringe..doesn’t seem right to use those kind of words for a joke anymore..ty
Also keep in mind, it would probably be unwise to tap the guy on the shoulder and point out that he is “historically ignorant”.
Cool.
Perspective and proximity, they’re important.
It’s funny cause I was talking about that person, the daughter of ‘those people’.
